A large portion of the evidence presented in the salacious 35-page dossier put together by former British spy Christopher Steele, has either been proven wrong or remains unsubstantiated. However, the FBI gained approval nevertheless to surveil members of Trump’s campaign and “it’s outrageous and clearly should be thoroughly investigated,” said a senior law enforcement source, with knowledge of the process.

The implications are huge. The current (at the time) government using the power of it's enforcement arm against the opposition party. This is Banana republic type of stuff. And there was absolutely no intention of making this public.

They have had over a year to come up with alternative reasons for the actions taken. If that (backdated?) documentation could not be created then the fall back position is likely to be that matters of national security prevent them from discussing the specifics involved.
 
A Second Look at the Steele Dossier

So, more than a year after the production of the original raw reports, where do we stand?

I think it is fair to say that the report is not “garbage” as several commentators claimed. The Orbis sources certainly got some things right – details that they could not have known prior. Steele and his company appear serious and credible. Of course, the failure of the Trump team to report details that later leaked out and fit the narrative may make the Steele allegations appear more prescient than they otherwise might. At the same time, the hesitancy to be honest about contacts with Russia is consistent with allegations of a conspiracy.

All that said, one large portion of the dossier is crystal clear, certain, consistent and corroborated. Russia’s goal all along has been to do damage to America and our leadership role in the world. Also, the methods described in the report fit the Russians to a tee. If the remainder of the report is largely true, Russia has a powerful weapon to help achieve its goal. Even if it is largely false, the Kremlin still benefits from the confusion, uncertainty and political churn created by the resulting fallout. In any regard, the Administration could help cauterize the damage by being honest, transparent and assisting those looking into the matter. Sadly, the President has done the opposite, ensuring a Russian win no matter what. In any event, I would suspect the Russians will look to muddy the waters and spread false and misleading information to confuse investigators and public officials.

As things stand, both investigators and voters will have to examine the information in their possession and make sense of it as best they can. Professional investigators can marry the report with human and signals intelligence, they can look at call records, travel records, interview people mentioned in the report, solicit assistance from friendly foreign police and intelligence services, subpoena records and tie it to subsequent events that can shed light on the various details. We, on the other hand, will have to do our best to validate the information at hand. Looking at new information through the framework outlined in the Steele document is not a bad place to start.

This is the biggest story and investigation happening, but the media is just mum on it.

This seems to be a case of the incumbent party using federal intelligence and law enforcement assets to derail an opponent and his campaign. Politically, the left wing moralizers have no problem with this tactic except that it didn't work and their buddies got caught. And we talk about dangerous immigrants?

I think it is much worse than just simple political propaganda. This was the party in power at the time during a campaign to spread unsubstantiated propaganda to at least 5 Intel agencies, as well as a fraud on the court to obtain warrants to spy on the opposing party candidate...this is at the least unAmerican and a clear attack on the Republic...And the MSM, along with liberal traitors saying this is nothing, or some sort of distraction, need to check themselves. This very likely reached President Obama.

2. The investigation was underway prior to the Dossier being published.

Using the power of the federal government against a political opponent is more in tuned with the old USSR or even Russia and China today. There have been abuses in the past. I do remember LBJ using the IRS to audit his political opponents. But after Watergate that became sort of taboo. Although the IRS might have been used to stifle conservative speech and organizations during the 2012 elections. It is hard to prove whether that was an employee, Learner just trying to please her boss or if she had orders. Fine line there which is hard to prove one way or the other especially since she took the 5th. That did leave the impression of guilt on her part. At least in my eyes.

It's shenanigans like these that has lowered the public trust in their government. which is down to 18%.
