Yes, you are right. If I think about it hard (and I wish I didn't have to), the GOP I feel in love with was the one I first supported, led by Ronald Reagan. It's gone downhill since then, and as of 2016 when they made Trump the leader of the party, it officially started swirling in the bowl.
It started swirlling in the toilet bowl when Bush 45 got elected. Bush had no sense of compassion, and an excess of ego... not as bad as Trump, but he certainly wasn't the man his father was. He learned quite a bit of compassion toward the end of his second term, when he stopped listening to Cheney. It only took several trillion dollars and a huge number of deaths due to war for that lesson to sink in. Bush Sr was very good with foreign policy, but didn't have a grasp of domestic concerns. He also inherited a bad economy due to the attempt of supply side economics from Reagan, and he refused to admit there was a problem, because he was concentrating on Kuwait and Iraq.
