e Arpaio, the former Arizona sheriff notorious for his draconian views on immigration, is running for the Senate seat being vacated by Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) later this year.

“I have a lot to offer. I’m a big supporter of President Trump,” Arpaio, 85, told the Washington Examiner in an interview published Tuesday.

His unorthodox and often discriminatory policing tactics got him into trouble when he disregarded a 2011 Department of Justice order that forbade him from detaining people illegally based on their immigration status. Authorities had found that Arpaio’s officers called Latinos “wetbacks,” “Mexican bitches,” “****ing Mexicans” and “stupid Mexicans.”

Arpaio is running for Jeff Flake's open Senate seat. In my opinion, a much bigger flake is running for Flake's seat. This is the age of Trump hate. This makes sense.

Maybe he will get spending under control.

He'd have to win, first. Arizona is much less rednecky that Alabama and you saw what just happened to Roy Moore. Arpaio is just Roy Moore without the proclivity to abuse children.

Understatement of the year, ("He'd have to win." ) No ****! And molesting others is asking to be voted out IMO. (assuming his guilt)

That we know of.

True - but just on his own, Arpaio is similar to Moore because he operates outside of the laws he, himself is responsible for enforcing. Like sleazy Moore, Arpie also promotes racist conspiracy theories (birtherism) which makes Arpie as much of a danger to democracy as Moore.

More likely he'll just violate constitutional rights some more. Not that you care about such things.

Why do you presume that I don't care about such things? Don't answer, I can tell where your degree of intellect is.

An 85 yr old first-term Senator.

Well he would be the youngest senator from the state. Looks like 2018 might be a replay of 2010 when Republicans ran the "I am not a witch" candidate in Delaware.

I don't live in AZ and don't care if Arpaio gets elected or not, but I came across a story that y'all might find interesting.

A Tuesday poll from ABC15/OHPI shows Joe Arpaio skyrocketing to the top of the Republican Primary for U.S. Senate in Arizona.

The poll, conducted the same day Arpaio announced his Senate run, shows the former sheriff with 29% of the vote, a statistical tie with first place candidate Martha McSally at 31%.

Former state senator Kelli Ward, who has been the front runner in recent polls, drops to 25% in this latest survey.

The poll mirrors initial speculation that Arpaio could edge out Ward and create an opening for McSally, who colleagues have said is planning a Senate run but has not yet made an announcement.

Arpaio takes an even more notable jump when considering hypothetical endorsements that candidates may receive.

Good grief, Arpaio. He burned a dog alive and laughed when the owner cried. He made women give birth in shackles. He refused to investigate child sex crimes. He operated what he called a "concentration camp." Those are just a few of the disgusting things he's known for.

I'd have to agree. Not only that, there's a number of troubling things in his past that are going to be liabilities.

I suppose the hope would be that he doesn't make it past the primaries.

Arpaio may make McSally campaign harder to appeal to far right votes in order to win the primary.

Not a good thing when campagining in the general.

Well, I can't vote in AZ, so I'm not likely to have any sort of effect. From what I've heard, McSally is the best candidate of the three listed.

I also think the graphic may be misleading from the standpoint that doesn't Trump have yet to endorse Arpaio?
I know that he gave him a pardon and all, but does that necessarily mean that he'll also get Trump's endorsement?

I guess we'll have to see how this develops.

Arpaio is one of FOUR convicted criminals running in republican primaries

If elected, he'd be in good company?

  • Chaka Fattah (D-PA) was convicted on 23 counts of racketeering, fraud, and other corruption charges. (2016)[9]
  • Dennis Hastert (R-IL) Speaker of the United States House of Representatives pleaded guilty in court for illegally structuring bank transactions related to payment of $3.5 million to quash allegations of sexual misconduct with a student when he was a high school teacher and coach decades ago.[10] (2016)
  • Michael Grimm (R-NY) pleaded guilty of felony tax evasion. This was the fourth count in a 20-count indictment brought against him for improper use of campaign funds. The guilty plea had a maximum sentence of three years; he was sentenced to eight months in prison. (2015)[11][12]
  • Trey Radel (R-FL) was convicted of possession of cocaine in November 2013. As a first-time offender, he was sentenced to one year probation and fined $250. Radel announced he would take a leave of absence, but did not resign. Later, under pressure from a number of Republican leaders, he announced through a spokesperson that he would resign. (2013)[13][14][15]
  • Rick Renzi (R-AZ) was found guilty on 17 of 32 counts against him June 12, 2013, including wire fraud, conspiracy, extortion, racketeering, money laundering and making false statements to insurance regulators. (2013)[16]
  • Jesse Jackson, Jr. (D-IL) pleaded guilty February 20, 2013, to one count of wire and mail fraud in connection with his misuse of $750,000 in campaign funds. Jackson was sentenced to two and one-half years' imprisonment. (2013)[17]
  • Laura Richardson (D-CA) was found guilty on seven counts of violating US House rules by improperly using her staff to campaign for her, destroying the evidence and tampering with witness testimony. The House Ethics Committee ordered Richardson to pay a fine of $10,000. (2012)[18][19]

This is only a small part of a much larger list. Yeah, must be that 'DC thing' or something.

Even though you may part the swamp's waters, they flow back and resume their previous level?

True to a point- Can the Party refuse to let him run as an R in the primary?
This guy is a real POS.
