The historic Jackson Magnolia has been on the south facade of the White House since the 1800s—making it the oldest on the grounds. But Tuesday, Melania Trump reportedly made the decision to have it removed after tree specialists determined “the overall architecture and structure of the tree is greatly compromised,” reported CNN.
CNN obtained documents from specialists at the United States National Arboretum, which determined the magnolia tree must be removed. The tree is “completely dependent on artificial support,” the document read.
Nothing is sacred. I would build a stone support for it. A wall to keep the tree up. This tree is 200 years old!!! I guess nothing is sacred....

She should be used to that.

I would be upset about this except in this case there seems to be non-selfish reasons for taking it down. I am all for leaving trees where they are if they are healthy.

We had hanging gardens in the past and many great wonders. It couldnt cost more than 1,000 bucks to figure out a way to make this tree exist. For at least another 100 years. Hell its in a pretty prime part of america im sure they could spend 10,000 and make it even cooler. Why wouldnt you wanna own a 300 year old tree?!?!

Most not all of the three, for cause, the wood will be saved for some future use, and established processes were followed to get to this result.......this is a time to cheer the Trumps for following rules, and to give the so-called journalists the finger for their suckage.

How about we have an honest back story to this.

A large portion of an iconic tree planted by President Jackson in the 1800s is slated to be cut down this week.

First Lady Melania Trump made the decision to uproot the Jackson Magnolia after experts determined that it was beyond saving and posed a safety hazard, her spokeswoman said Tuesday.

After reviewing the reports, she trusted that every effort had been made to preserve the historic tree, and was concerned about the safety of visitors and members of the press who are often standing right in front of the tree during Marine One lifts,” said Stephanie Grisham.

Wood from the tree will be preserved, Grisham added. The First Lady has also requested that its seedlings be maintained in the event that a new Magnolia tree can be planted in the same area.

Now if this had been Michelle Obama making the same decision, would you honestly be saying "nothing is sacred?"

Just so you understand, you're crying over a tree that's near death.

Well the tree cant make its own decisions and is a pretty important part of america. It couldnt cost more than like.... 4000 bricks to save this tree?

not every tree is destined to live forever

nature even catches up to white house trees

maybe they can replace with something else that is pretty and will last 100-200 years from now

Oh common we have hydroponic wizards that can turn tomatos into watermelons. Thats cool that she wants to keep its lineage though. Im a libertarian so that gives me the freedom to antagonize the LEFT AND THE RIGHT. :D

We should all know by now that nothing CNN says should be considered news or the truth until it checks out.

Right. Far longer than our country will be standing.

:)

As a nation we own millions of trees a lot older than that. Hell, there are trees older than that in just DC. It ain’t Methusala.

When all I can see is "Melania Trump Orders removal of" and I find out it's just a tree, talk about a letdown!

4000 bricks?
When trees are dying they don't produce leaves, the branches get brittle, it stops growing, and the story said part of it is already filled with cement. It takes more than bark for a tree to survive.

Besides, if Andrew Jackson had it planted wouldn't it be a racist tree?
Or is Old Hickory considered okay?
Hey, maybe his nickname should have been Old Magnolia.

I get the feeling you're doing a bit of tongue-in-cheek posting with this thread.

Eh, it's just a tree. it isn't really something to get up in arms about.

At 200 the tree has outlived it's "natural" life.

Having been a professional gardener at the end of my career, I would have to agree. It sounds like the tree is on life support. Magnolias are not long-lived and should be removed....and replaced.
The wood should be harvested and set aside for the creation of keepsakes, etc. for historical purposes.

I knew this thread was coming.... not the person who I thought would start it, though.
