Memphis's Novel Strategy for Tearing Down Confederate Statues

If you want to have a conversation, I'm willing, but I'm not going to post comments and have 99% of them clipped and ignored, and then repeat points that directly address arguments you make in this new post. It's not worth my time if you're not going to read what I write and address it. IMO, it's a dishonest way to debate.

I stopped paying attention to your post where I cut it off, because that's a false/dishonest characterization of my post. I'd explain, but you just clipped my comment where anyone reading my words can discern my points, then lied/misrepresented what I said. So I'll pass further efforts.

Here's one answer to the question: Did the Old Racist Democrats Become Today's Republicans? No.

The old guys have all died, it is their heirs who have become today's Republicans. The change was led by people like Strom Thurmond, Jesse Helms and Mills E. Godwin, who actually did shift party allegiance after Thurmond ran as a Dixiecrat in 1948. The gradual change in party affliation became an avalanche following the passage of the Civil Rights Act in '64 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Though many Republicans in the Senate supported these laws, the party chose Barry Goldwater as its candidate in '64, he had opposed the Civil Rights Act.

Works for me. If people object, they can not use those parks.

OTOH I'm not a fan of the govt selling public lands but in this case it doesnt seem like it's selling to a company that's going to exploit it and profit from its resources.

Selling resources for profit is not “exploitation”

In any event apparently Tennessee has no process for buying or selling public land, I find it hard to believe there’s no laws requiring public notice, RFP process and bidding

Bottom line is Memphis is over 2/3 black and there's no good reason the people of Memphis need to keep monuments to slavers and Kluckers in their public parks. Blacks had no say when these monuments to racists and white supremacists were erected during the Jim Crow era, and the State of Tennessee again removed their voice in deciding to ignore the people of Memphis and rule that Memphis had to keep these monuments in place. I'm glad Memphis found a way to do what they've tried to do by working with the state for years now. The State refused to negotiate in good faith, passing laws further removing the voice of the people in Memphis, and so the city of Memphis found a way to do what the citizens of Memphis demanded. The world is better off with those monuments gone.

Way to go, Memphis. THAT will solve those problems.

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -
Crime has certainly been a key issue in the months long Memphis mayoral campaign.“It's clear that we've gone from 5th most dangerous city to the 3rd most dangerous city," candidate Jim Strickland said during a recent debate. Now, the FBI's newest uniform crime report ranks Memphis as the second most violent city in the United States."
FBI: Memphis second in violent crime - WMC Action News 5 - Memphis, Tennessee

Why is solving crime a requirement for what the OP is about? I'm sure it won't do anything about traffic jams in the area, but that's equally beside the point.

What a stupid attempt to move the goalposts.

The only thing that is ****ing stupid is morons insisting on ginning up hatred over inanimate objects when all around them people are bleeding, starving, and dying.

No need for "ginning up hatred." The state of Tennessee could have just stayed out of the whole mess and allowed the city of Memphis to do what they wanted YEARS ago, which is take down monuments their citizens no longer want in their public spaces.

You can't whine about people in Memphis making a big deal about taking down some monuments when it's only a big deal because the state legislator inserted their unwanted opinion into the issue and made sure to keep the issue going for YEARS now. Either it matters or it doesn't. If it doesn't, the state had no business overruling the city of Memphis. Trust me - our state has lots of serious problems, but the state legislature decided to 'waste time' passing more laws and restrictions on what happens to these monuments. You can't blame Memphis for spending time on this issue when it would have been resolved long ago but for the meddling of the state.

You go on ahead and fabricate hatred all you like. Funny how you folk go through your cycles on this. It' mattered' and was front page news...for a few weeks. Then it vanished as a news story only surfacing occasionally when **** stirrers feel the need to foment fresh hatred and pretend to give a **** about minorities.

You ignored my comment entirely. Memphis has been working to remove the statue of Klukker N.B. Forrest since at least 2013. If not for state meddling, it would have been done no later than 2015 and been out of the news since then. It's all in the article cited in the OP.

As to your comment, all you've got is childish insults. It's like having a conversation with an 8 year old, which makes it boring. You're not even making a coherent point.

Yes...I ignored you completely. Your insistence on stirring up hatred is boring.

Good comment. Glad you resurrected a dead thread for that!

Busy working. Not much time to drive by lately. Was not dead for me. I still had some hope to help you out.
