VA cuts program for homeless vets

Apparently, protests can be effective.

VA kills plan to cut homeless-vet program after outcry

Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin has killed a plan to shift money from a major homelessness program in response to a wave of protest from veterans' advocates, who said the move would aggravate conditions for chronically ill and vulnerable vets.

Advocates for veterans, state officials and even officials from HUD, which co-sponsors the $460 million program, had attacked the decision, saying the service has helped dramatically reduce homelessness among veterans. After POLITICO published a story about their anger, Shulkin reversed course late Wednesday.

The whole process of ending the program was carried in what has become an all too normal manner for Trump minions
The announcement came after a confusing week of messaging from the VA. On Nov. 27, Shulkin and HUD Secretary Ben Carson appeared at a Washington shelter to tout President Donald Trump's commitment to ending veteran homelessness.

Then on Dec. 1, Shulkin's staff told advocates on a phone call that the agency was ending the program--one of two major VA homelessness projects-- and funneling the money to local VA hospitals that could decide how to use it. The original VA decision was buried in a September circular without prior consultation with HUD or veterans’ groups.

A person involved with the program said the decision to cut it was made with no input from rank-and-file VA or HUD staff and surprised even employees at the VA.

Let's stop taking refugees immediately and spend that money on our veterans.

People should stop signing up for the service.

Where were you when vets were dying under Obama waiting for an appointment?

Where are you now? The best lesson to take from this is that the US government doesn't give a **** about the people serving the country.

I think there is more to this story.

Our veterans are more important that the refugees.

It seems the government cares more about their wealthy donors than anybody else.

I think there is more to this story.

You just think so? Since we invaded Iraq, vets haven't been treated properly. The VA is a wreck. Their benefits slashed. The military is do desperate they are letting in people with mental health issues and health issues.

Stop trying to find a partisan slant in this story.

Yet, the reugees are still coming.

Most Americans don't care about refugees. So you're winning that side of the argument already, and yet, vets are not better off for it.

Actually, I was frequently driving my disabled vet brother to his appointments, and glad he had medical services.

What about those that didn't get any?

Given America's growing housing shortage this sort of thing becomes impossible as it is too expensive to help too few people.

There is no alternative to solving the underlying problem...the housing shortage.

But America no longer works you see...

Which is why Trump is here....

YOU SEE

Housing shortage? There are enough vacant houses in the country for every homeless vet to have one. With thousands and thousands to spare.

Lack of places, and very high prices, we increasingly can not house the American people.

One of the Elite Classes bigger mistakes.

Or, when you just break all the eggs, you make a mess.

It is HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY important that destruction be conducted wisely, which is yet another thing that we increasingly can not do well, often because of lack of effort but also we are widely stupid now.

WE USED TO BE BETTER!

Most of them in places no one wants to be....

Or in a condition that no one wants to live in.

How does that saying go...something about beggars and choosing...do you really think homeless vets, if offered a vacant home, would say "nah, I don't like this neighborhood, and that siding is just tacky"?

Perhaps you confuse wisely with thoroughly?

I was posting a reply earlier and my laptop chose that time to go black, lol. I'd like to see more and better services for vets, medical and housing. I think we probably all would like that to happen.
