Perry links fossil fuel development to preventing sexual assault | TheHill

Speaking during an energy policy discussion about energy policy with “Meet the Press” host Chuck Todd and Axios CEO and founder Jim VandeHei, Perry discussed his recent trip to Africa. He said a young girl told him that energy is important to her because she often reads by the light of a fire with toxic fumes.

"But also from the standpoint of sexual assault,” Perry said. “When the lights are on, when you have light that shines, the righteousness, if you will on those types of acts.”

If you read by the light of a toxic fire, you probably can't afford electricity or light bulbs, or even a non-toxic fire.

Apparently women can leave their mace and pepper spray at home and quite their self defense classes if they just pack a flash light. The righteousness of light will keep you safe.

I thought this was already common knowledge? I always carry a flashlight around with me, to keep the predators away.

Whenever I think of Rick Perry I think of how his college transcripts show he got a D in a class called "meats". He isn't a bright guy.

Nonsense! I could give you 3 reasons why he's a bright man.....but I forgot 'em all.

Rick Perry was an excellent Governor and lieutenant Governor for Texas.
He was a Pilot in the Air Force, and they do not seem to be in the habit of letting dummies
fly the planes.
Perry may also have a point about safety and well lit environments.

Yea, that's what people say about submarine officers, but there are definitely some dummies there. Look at his transcripts and listen to him speak. Tell me that guy knows what the hell he's talking about.

In self-defense classes, women are often told to avoid darkened streets and alleys and go to a well-lit place if they feel they are in danger.

Why do you hate women?

No Rick Perry has to tell you that.

No, he doesn't. Most rapes take place in the home of either the victim or the perp, who is usually known to the victim in some way, ranging from work colleague to spouse. In most cases, the rape begins while the victim is awake, and presumably there are lights on.

All but one rape victim I've known personally has been raped under those circumstances. The exception got hit by a date-rape drug.

We cannot protect women from rape by forcing them to limit their lives and handle men as though they were rabid dogs. If men are really that bad, then frankly, they have no business ever being in public, and I don't know why more men aren't offended by that insinuation of their total lack of humanity.

But of course, that is not what men inherently are. For those who rape, that is simply how we've encouraged them to be. The best and most effective protection against rape is teaching men that they are not entitled to women's bodies.

I had a short conversation in the summer of 1996 with then Texas Lt. Gov. Rick Perry.

I had never met him before so, didn't know him; during our short conversation he made disparaging remarks concerning his sister.

Wow, what a guy; Perry making a complete ass out of himself to me, a complete stranger.

Boy, was I impressed

IMO Mr. Perry does say some stupid **** ..............

Not in good self-defense classes.

Statistically, stranger rape is very rare -- only a tiny minority of rapes happen from getting jumped at random. In reality, men are statistically MUCH more likely to be attacked in a dark alley than women are.

Transcripts from 40 years ago may be relevant to some, but his actions and skillful decisions as Governor
show him to be an effective leader.
If the Texas Economy were ranked as a nation, it would be the 10th largest in the world,
and Rick Perry has a lot to do with that.

I am clearly not qualified to speak on the subject, but suspect some percentage of rapes
are crimes of opportunity, where under the cover of darkness someone things they can get away with a crime.
We do not know how much good lighting would be as a deterrent, but it cannot hurt.

Yes, in good self-defense classes. The idea is to get to a place where an assault is less likely to take place if you're being followed.

Uh, no. Because that isn't going to protect almost any woman from rape. Because that just isn't how the vast majority of rapes happen. It is actually men who are at risk in the typical dark alley situation.

Only about 5% of rapes are committed by someone who is a stranger to the victim. And even most of those are initially started in a place where a woman may feel she's safe (i.e. not in a dark alley, but rather at a party or whatever).

So... not really. I mean, it happens. But that is just not how most rapes go down. Most rapes are planned, and committed as an act of control.

We do know, man. We've been studying it for decades. Most rapes are committed by someone known to the victim, and they are NOT crimes of opportunity. They are crimes of power and control.

Actually, we do know -- lighting is an excellent deterrent.

Making sure your home is well-lit inside and out.

The only exception to fighting back is when you're running away from your attacker, in which case you should always try to run toward well-lighted areas and places where other people are around.
Self Defense Tips

The attacker has thought out the situation, and the ``good`` victim is someone who fits what is planned. This plan usually requires darkness and isolation.

If you`re driving and a car with flashing lights tries to pull you over, check for a state police license. Remember, police, by law, have to pull up behind you, not along side or in front of you. If in doubt, keep going. You will not be arrested because you look for a well-lighted place to stop.
Forget Karate As Self-defense - tribunedigital-chicagotribune

Avoid dark, deserted areas, stay in well-lit areas.

If you're being followed by someone, cross the street, act suspicious and keep looking behind you. This may discourage the follower. Walk towards a well-lit business or a group of people.

Leave your outside light on so you can easily see when you return home.

Make sure your home is well-lit, and replace burnt out light bulbs immediately.

Always park in well-lighted area, if you plan to arrive/leave after dark

So virtually every police department in the nation is wrong?

I don't think so.

I am not sure US statistics apply to other regions, but anything that deters, rape, assault, robbery, ect. is a good thing.

Oil has more to do with that than Rick Perry.

Actually it was Perry's policies of building a business friendly environment.
Oil is a big part of the Texas economy, but oil has been down for a few years, and the economy is still
riding high.

Yeah, dude.

I mean... why is that surprising? This is the same organization that can't even categorize rape reports right, let alone remember to investigate them half the time.

But this doesn't. That's my point. And the fact that it doesn't just makes it all the more insulting that the implication is basically that women should have curfews and men are just animals.

What deters rapists is teaching people that they are not entitled to control or power over other people's bodies.

Sorry, I've been involved in this for a very long time and bright light deters assault, especially sexual assault. Maybe 70% of rapes involve an attacker known by the victim, but 30% do not. Those 30% of women deserve to be safe as well. Many a would-be attacker has quit following a woman when the lighting was strong. I don't care for Perry, but light deters rape.
