Looks like a big political debate on redistricting is looming

Republican Group Ready to Spend Big on Redistricting Roll Call, Sep 29, 2017

A new Republican group launched a campaign Thursday to counter the efforts of an organization chaired by former Attorney General Eric Holder to redistrict Congressional boundaries more favorably to Democrats after the 2020 U.S. Census.

The National Republican Redistricting Trust announced it would raise $35 million by the 2021 redistricting to combat Holder’s group, the National Democratic Redistricting Committee, or NDRC, and assist the GOP in future redistricting cases.

Obama’s army enlists in redistricting fight Politico, 10/23/2017

Organizing for Action, the progressive group born out of Barack Obama’s old campaign apparatus, is joining the redistricting effort that Obama has made a central cause of his post-presidency.

I recommend both sides support a mathematical solution
Can an Algorithm Eliminate the Unfairness of Gerrymandering?

I saw Holder on Rachael Maddow last night, he mentioned fairness in redistricting, but no details.
Didn't find any here either:
National Democratic Redistricting Committee

Redistricting is the biggest sham that both sides have done. Given that neither side is ethical enough or trustworthy enough to oversee it on their own, I would agree that a computer solution with a mathematic algorithm should be used.

I can see the GOP slogans now

45% at the polls equals 55% of legislative seats!!!!

Politicians should pick their Voters - not the other way around!!!!

Changing the minority into the majority with a few lines!!!!!!!

Our Voters may be dwindling, but gerrymandering will save the GOP!!!!!!

Neither side can be trusted with redistricting. The end result of this is way to many seat that are "safe". Basically
no matter what the representative does or does not do he/she gets reelected. Don't know how the mathematical algorithm
would work but if it would be a fairer method it should be considered.

I agree that use of an algorithm is ideal, except for one issue...

How do you know that you can trust the algorithm programmer to not insert bias into the equation.

Remember several election cycles ago when the CEO of a voting machine manufacturer stated he would do everything in his power to see that a Republican was elected...

There are many different algorithms proposed.
Here's one, the results not the math. You can look up your own state.

Put the algorithm in the legislation and publish the code for per-review.

That is a big concern. If we are using a program that program can be hacked. It's nearly impossible to stop hacking from occurring.
There would be great motivation to fix the algorithm.

Your talking about counting being hacked. The algorithm's results can be checked after the fact, by anyone with access to the count.

Because you can run simulations with whatever redistricting software you use to check the actual results against the intended results.

Independent contract award and approval from a bi-partisan group and a demonstration of the system.
