Walmart fires grandmother for taking dollar she found on floor | New York Post

An octogenarian Walmart worker was apparently fired for very a ‘petit’ offense — pocketing a dollar bill that someone dropped on the store floor, according to a reports.

Frankie Ruffino, 84, of Texas worked as a greeter at a Walmart in Brenham for nearly a decade, but was fired from the gig the day after she found the buck, she told KHOU.com.

“I found a dollar bill on the floor, just one dollar bill,” Ruffino recalled to the news outlet, adding that she discovered the single bill lying in the aisle as she was getting ready to close up.

This will give the wal-mart haters plenty of ammo.

I'd imagine that this has more to do with whoever is the store manager at this particular WalMart, and less to do with the company as a whole. Not to say that WalMart doesn't have some glaring problems with it, like allowing their parking lots to turn into the Homeless YMCA, etc.

New York Post though... I mean unless the Manager really had it out for her, this does appear to be only her version of events and not to **** on an 84 year old woman or anything.

But if I had to theorize, either the Manager used this as an excuse to get rid of an old fogey he didn't want around.

Or, I hope at least, there's more to this because that's pretty damned heartless otherwise.

What does her being a grandmother have to do with it?

Yay private sector, yay freedoms of employers, yay free markets....

...but then I found something I don't like.

Seems like a really *****y move, but, there it is. I'll bet backlash leads to reinstatement unless there's more.

If it was a government job, she wouldn't have been hired because she's too old.

Government run everything! Yeah!

Corp policy- I worked at a Muliti National grocery store in Canada. Yep Canada-
Rules state clearly that anything found is required to be turned into either Security or such.
We had people fired for stealing what was thrown into garbage- even the garbage is owned by the company.

Now as they are non union, the store manager may have legally been able to make an exception without creating a precedent that could be used by others?
The issue is not the 1 $, it is the rules and such that apply to all.
Do I sound heartless, well I am not.
The issue is precedent and what and who will challenge dismissal for theft.
In the end it is theft.

Problem is what the lawyers state- if this would lead to another employee grieving and winning an appeal for dismissal as they only took 5 $. The lawyers win.

That's terribly interesting

84 and still working, why? Think on it. If not read the link. Not uncommon.

I work for the government, you should see some of the golden oldies where I work.

I know it's a sad state of affairs. Everything is beautiful in this corporate utopia. Just ask the one percent.

So by that theory If a shopper found a dollar on the floor of Walmart and picked up and kept it for themselves, Walmart could charged them with steeling.

What I stated was not theory. What I stated was Corporate policy.
As to the shopper, I do not know, as they were not employees.

I can't speak for Sobeys, Superstore or Safeway or whoever it was you worked for, but there is such a thing as discretion.

I'm a manager in a union environment so I understand the need for strict protocol when it comes to Lost and Found and especially cash.

But it is a Dollar.

Like it's a dollar man... And any manager out there has discretion in how to deal with such instances especially non-union where it is easier to hire and fire, if she had no discplinary problems before this incident as she claims, then firing her over the dollar is simply inappropriate as far as all that is right and fair in the universe goes.

Corporate Policy however... Well yeah that's a different conversation.

If it was a government job, she'd have retired at 40 with a $150k per year pension, and Cadillac medical benefits.

The government is not any better. Example -

Harry Reid directed millions of dollars of taxpayers money to build a bridge that happened to connect his property to a major roadway, which quadrupled the value of his property. He wasn't punished in any way.

Yet if you accidentally misfile your tax return by a few hundred dollars, you can be arrested and imprisoned.

The places your mind goes...

Walmart (and other stores) has a no tolerance policy for keeping found money. Parking lot, in store... I've seen plenty of articles about instances. I'm sure it's part of their orientation presentation for new employees. It seems a pretty simple rule to follow. When ones employer threatens firing for an offense, especially a big employer with hundreds of applicants, believe them.

Most states, including Texas, have what is called 'at will' employment. The employee, or the employer can, at any time, terminate the employment, without any advance notice and without any cause required. If WalMart wants to fire a retail employee in Texas then they really have no need to offer a cause for ending the employment of said employee. Getting canned is a part of life; folks need to get over that ...........

As a side note: WalMart sucks IMO .......

No, that would be stealing.
Walmart employment rules cannot be applied to shoppers who are not employees.
Lord, give me strength.

I once worked for a chain store. The company stole our tips, even after the union kicked their asses for it.

The millions of dollars squandered on private air fare by the Trump cabinet.

What does your reply have to do with my question? Does "grandmother" invoke a certain emotion from you? Had the article simply stated "woman," would you have cared? This is typical media manipulation.
