Really, does the punishment fit the alleged crime by this 11 year-old kid?

From the Denver Post:

Eleven-year-old Ames Mayfield, a fifth-grader at Prospect Ridge Academy and a Scout for five years, on Oct. 9 asked Sen. Vicki Marble, R-Fort Collins, questions about gun control, and about comments Marble made at a 2013 legislative hearing on poverty about mortality rates among African-Americans.

The boy’s mother, Lori Mayfield, on Wednesday said Ames was kicked out of his den, or Scout group, as a result.

Ames’ questions, and other Scouts’ questions, were recorded and posted on YouTube by Mayfield in a video titled “Vicki Marble denies chicken-gate.”

Vicki Marble during a den organized event on Oct. 9. Lori Mayfield says her son was kicked out of his scout den after asking pointed questions of Marble at the event
“He is still kind of reeling from this,” Mayfield said. “He is really sensitive, my heart breaks for him.”

Ames’ questions, and other Scouts’ questions, were recorded and posted on YouTube by Mayfield in a video titled “Vicki Marble denies chicken-gate.”

“I was astonished that you blamed black people for poor health and poverty because of all the chicken and barbecue they eat,
” Ames said to Marble at the Scout meeting.

“I didn’t, that was made up by the media,” Marble replied. “So, you want to believe it? You believe it. But that’s not how it went down. I didn’t do that. That was false. Get both sides of the story.”

In 2013 Marble said: “When you look at life expectancy, there are problems in the black race. Sickle-cell anemia is something that comes up. Diabetes is something that’s prevalent in the genetic makeup, and you just can’t help it.

“Although I’ve got to say,” she continued at the time. “I’ve never had better barbecue and better chicken and ate better in my life than when you go down South and you, I mean, I love it. Everybody loves it.”
That is not a question that is an accusation, and not the words of a shy retiring 5th grader but rather a Hell Raiser.

Truth really does matter....

I see. So instead of taking the 11 y.o. kid off to one side and describing to him where he went wrong, the right thing to do is to just kick him out, no discussions, no debate, just kick him out right away?

If our military recruits were treated that way, we wouldn't have a military at all.

I'll give you the same reply I gave Hawkeye:

What were his priors? If this was his first offence, it's a different story than if it was the last straw.

I took no position on what the Scouts did, I said that the threat title is in error and that the kids mom is clearly lying.

However, considering that the kid was a dick and that his mom is lying what the scouts did is not likely to be something that I ever care about.

It seems like the kid did something the mom put him up to. I really doubt a 11 year old is scraping news stories for something done 5 years ago.

There's really 2 wrongs here, the scout troop for not teaching this like a teachable moment and the mom for whatever influence she wielded that made her son think that was a good idea.

However...if it is as being reported and he got kicked out of a den for asking her a 'hard' question...thats pretty redonkulous dont you think?

How many 5th graders do you suppose use the word astonished on their own?

Not many I think.

The so-called journalists suck.

OK...but you still have to admit that the flaw here is in the local scout organization response...not the reporter, or even the mother.

The kid is eleven and was commenting on a comment made by the lady made in 2013... when the kid was 7 years old.

This stinks of parents leading the kid to set-up the lady congressperson whoever...

ALSO, what if the kid is just a pain in the ass, or his parents are, regarding the Boy Scouts? What do they do? Kick him out. Good.

I just had a case here, as a teacher, where a parent went to complain to the principal about me. Saying I kicked her kid out of class for just asking a question. That I was unprofessional and disrespectful. That I had no business being a teacher.

I was kinda shocked that the parent would do that but more amused because I knew how it would turn out. When the principal and other senior staff sat me down to inquire what was going on they found out that the girl was lying to the mom and that the mom bought the whole thing. It was all documented. All the times I had to kick the kid out of class for swearing or disrupting the class or threatening kids or threatening that she would get her mom to make a complaint in order to get me fired two weeks before this happened. Oh, her mom was shocked about that one. The deans and other teachers also made similar documentation. The girl was eventually kicked out of school.

Point is... there is a lot of bull**** that people make up and it grabs headlines.

Yaaaa....I mean, I enjoy a GOP roast as much as the next guy, but ... this feels a little contrived. That said, I went to school with a guy around the same age that could tell you every country in Africa for the last hundred years, some kids are wired differently, and if that's the case, and this kid is some super smart, politically engaged kid, well, I'd say pushing him out was the wrong thing to do. But I'd need to know a lot more about this kid to come to that conclusion, as kids like that are awesome, but few and far between.

No, I know that the claim that the kid asked a question is a lie, and I know that the mom is lying, I do not however know that the scouts were wrong to kick him out. The scouts welcomed a guest, this kid acted horribly towards his guest whether it was his idea or his parents I dont think I care a lot about, acting horribly is certainly grounds for dismissal.

Was he for instance told to apologize and refused?

100% OUT if that happened if I am in charge.

I also know that the truth matters.

A Great Deal.

No 11 year old would ask those questions. The mother put him up to it and I suspect the mother has been a pain in the side of the cub scouts for some time.

But the question is, should the 11 y.o. be kicked out for what his mother did wrong? Or should the Cub Scouts have talked to them first? Is the Cub Scouts a one-strike-yer-out kind of organization? Do you see what I mean?

Come on dood. Thats just silly.

To me, tha would have been a great opportunity to sit own with the kid, one on one, and school the mother. Especially while she was recording it.
I went through the scouting program with both of my son. Both are Eagle Scouts. Id be willing to bet that of al the kids in the scout program in the history of ever, there hasnt been a kid that hasnt busted one or two of the scout laws.

This doesn't make any sense.

- According to this, Marble didn't tie barbecue to poverty at all. So I don't understand that part of the question.

However, in terms of food, one can say that it has been proven that poverty in early life is linked to later childhood obesity. This is especially true for white women and white children. The poor tend to be uneducated and thus clueless about what they eat. Also, unhealthy food tends to be the cheapest.

- And it is rather well known that southern culture, especially among black people, maintain a poor diet of fried foods, sugars, and starches. Sickle-Cell is the result of a hereditary and dietary decision; and diabetes and high cholesterol are great fans of fried food and sugar. So, pretending that black people haven't the ability to choose better foods is nonsense. Of course they are to blame. They are as much to blame as a person who gets constant cavities because he eats candy all day.

It appears that a lack of education is what spurred this kid to ask his dumb parents' question. But this is no cause to get kicked out of the Scouts. Sounds like one of these so-called leaders got his political feelings hurt.

You can bet there's two sides to this story. Currently, you're only telling one of them.

Prove the kid lied.
No doubt you never worked a a Scout Leader.
Reason you are not IN CHARGE
