Art Rooney II: Steelers never meant to boycott anthem | Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The Steelers’ decision to remain in the tunnel during the national anthem Sunday in Chicago has added to a national conversation about racial injustice and the connection between sports and patriotism. Tuesday, Steelers president Art Rooney II added his voice to the conversation.
Rooney, in a letter released by the team’s Twitter account, said the team never intended to boycott the anthem. Instead, Rooney wrote, the action was meant to unify the team and focus on playing football — not disrespect the military or the nation.
I'm going to go ahead and accept his word on this. :peace

Why even play the anthem? It didn't before 2009?

The NFL thought it would bolster the league that was sagging in ratings. Side note: latest poll shows that 11% less people watched the NFL in 2017 than 2016. I think the dolts at the NFL are on to something.

Lol.

Singing the national anthem before National Football League games has been ongoing for "decades," said NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy.

One aspect of this history that has spawned some confusion in recent days concerns a change made in 2009.

Until that year, players in primetime games would remain inside their locker rooms while the anthem was sung, due to timing concerns for the television networks. After 2009, the players in primetime games have been on the field during the anthem, McCarthy said.

But this change only affected primetime games. For all other games -- typically held at 1 p.m. or 4 p.m. Eastern -- players had already been stationed on the field for the national anthem. So the 2009 change simply applied to primetime games the rules that had already been in place for daytime games.

Wrong.

And so it starts. The NFL will have to back peddle big time to correct their very bad decision.
But I believe the damage has been done. So many are just pissed off!

Damn right it was intentional. That's the head coach ripped Villanuevo for saluting the flag.

That the national anthem has only been played at NFL games since 2009. And that only since then, players have been required to stand.

I know players in the NFL prior to 2009 stayed in their locker rooms, for the most part, while the anthem played. I know the anthem has been played in the NFL longer than 2009 (dude, I'm 62 years old).
Could someone shed light on why the NFL started to have players on the field for the anthem beginning in 2009? It wasn't to honor 9/11, I don't think.

Holy **** man, did you even read the post you quoted? YOU ARE WRONG. It was only during prime time games that players stayed in the locker room for the anthem pre-2009. Other than that, they have been on the field, standing up, since WW II.

Read the link. Sheesh.

Well part of my reasoning is that a Ranger apologized and said he was embarrassed, and I'm thinking there was a miscommunication MAYBE. We'll see, I'm accepting his word for now.

I'm not. If that wasn't their intention than they wouldn't have shamed a retired bronze star Army Ranger in to apologizing for paying his respects.

Maybe a mixup of sorts. I don't know.

I'm not sure this factoid is so important it warrants a '100 point' type of response. Lay off the caffeine, why don't you?

Tired of the leftist propaganda.

Apology accepted. And you taught me something about the issue.

You're right, I overreacted. I do apologize.

It's not the caffeine, I've just got a lot going on right now.
