FOLSOM (CBS13) — Controversy erupts at Vista Del Lago High School in Folsom over students chanting “USA.”It’s a popular way to for students to show pride during sporting events and rallies, but school and district officials are now warning students that the chants could appear inappropriate and intolerant.
“I wasn’t angry, but I was definitely like ‘Why can’t we chant USA?'” said senior Ryan Bernal, “To say USA, you know, we’re all the same. We’re all American. It doesn’t matter what your skin tone is or where you’re from.”
Folsom School Bans ‘USA’ Chant Over ‘Unintended Message’ Worries « CBS13 | CBS Sacramento

This **** pisses me off. The school administrators should be fired, on the spot.

The most-apt description of that is "self-loathing," one of the most detestable of personality traits.

Hold on a sec...

If one high school team is playing another high school team and both teams are from the USA, why would anyone want to start cheering "USA!" anyway? Everyone gets a participation medal, as it were?

Usually you root for one team, not the country both teams are from.

Anyway, I decline to join in a meltdown over some local high school politics, soooo......

Actually, you raise a very good point. If both sides cheer for the same thing ("USA"), isn't that like cheering for both sides? This kind of thinking is what leads to participation trophies, screw that, man!!!

The article didn't say why USA is intolerant or an unintended message. Perhaps the TV station news department can't explain it either. In my high school we went into a closet and took a couple whacks on the backside with large paddle when we misbehaved. That would probably make public school administrators faint.

They must be one of the top sports schools since clearly academics can not be something at which they excel. Proof of that are the eloquent words of the senior quoted in the article.

“I wasn’t angry, but I was definitely like ‘Why can’t we chant USA?'”

They should be chanting Folsom Prison Blues

Then be the hippest school in the district

I can see your point but I suggest to you that's it's really none of your business if you agree with the logic behind the chant. Freedom of speech applies here. What reasonable objection can be made to prevent the chant?

It shouldn't piss you off. The reason for the caution is that the county is at polar opposites these days and "nationalism"; note I didn't say patriotism is part of the far right agenda and that can mean trouble. So for now at least I think it's a good idea.

Why did I .. oh boy, gotta fix.

Well....I didn't want to discuss the reasonableness.

As for authority, minor students are held to have all sorts of diminished constitutional rights as against school administrators. I'm not saying that is good or fair, but that is what it is. The restricted rights include speech.

Either way, I have to question the idea of wanting to chant "USA!" at another team from the USA, if the goal is supposed to be national unity. That's just not how chanting works. Weird story.

I gotta be honest with you, I'm not saying your argument isn't accurate but I find it to be so terrible on so many aspects I'm not sure which I is the most important to take to task. Whatever I say next isn't personal at all, it's the position I'm attacking.

1. There's a bizarre hypocrisy in our culture that says it's OK for illegal Mexican children to come to school and openly demonstrate national pride for their native land but if our students do it, they are villianized for it.

2. Then there's this rush to defend unpopular speech by liberals like when they want to not stand for the national anthem but when people want to chant USA the defense isn't there.

3. Most minor of my objections but chanting USA imo is a very freindly gesture of good spirited rivalry between two opponets. It's a display of good sportsmanship. It's like when a guy on the other team gets hurt and the fans from both sides applaud that he gets up and walks off the field on his own. No hard feelings or bad wishes we understand its just a game.

1 & 2 are just stupid rants.

As for 3? As for 3, I've never heard anyone chant "USA!" in a game where a team from the USA plays a team from the USA.

It's a weird thing to do and it's a weird situation to get outraged about.

This really isn't worth the outrage....

Nationalism and patriotism are synonymous.

Because they're stupid? Just a guess.

Absolutely! Why can't they chant something non-controversial. An-Ti-Fa! An-Ti-Fa! would sound good.

I was asking the same question. There is probably more to this story than meets the eye.

Yes. They are synonymous. By the definition of synonymous...they are. Words have meaning.

Lmao!

No, they're not. Pro-tip: know what you're talking about before actually talking.

It's more about what the teachers are teaching your kids. If they are not taught the USA is special, great, and good, why should they give a damn about it?
