UPDATE: South Florida Museum officials said Snooty was found in an underwater area only used to access plumbing for the exhibit life support system. Early indications are that an access panel door that is normally bolted shut had somehow been knocked loose and that Snooty was able to swim in.

The aquarium is currently closed while Museum staff continues its investigation.

How very sad for those who love Snooty! My condolences to Snooty's family, friends and fans everywhere!

Snooty just celebrated a birthday on July 21st. I posted a thread about it in "Off Topic". Manatees rarely live beyond the age of 20 in the wild. Snooty spent his entire life in captivity.

Snooty died by apparent accident after accessing a plumbing area of the aquarium due to a door malfunction.

I thought snooty was rescued from the wild because of a boating accident. whatever happened to him prevented him from being released back. Do I have that wrong?

He was 69...sixty nine. Hell..I doubt I will live to be 69.

Millions of people starving to death in Yemen and almost no one says a thing about it.

But a 69-year-old manatee dies and it warrants lots of mourning - probably from many people who regularly eat meat. Those people are fine with cows and pigs getting treated horribly for their entire lives so they can gobble them up. But one 69 year old cute manatee dies and the sorrow pours forth.

The world is mighty ****ed up.

I can't recall what it was, but I had some super dark one-liner up my sleeve when this thread was still young, but I decided not to use because people would get mad. I sincerely regret that decision.
