Homeowner slams cop for shooting tail-wagging dog | New York Post

A Minneapolis homeowner demanded to know why a cop responding to a burglary call shot her two dogs at point-blank range — after one approached wagging his tail.

“My dogs were doing their job on my property,” she told the Star Tribune. “We have a right to be safe in our yard.”

Goes to show you that there really are murder cops out there just waiting for their chance to legally kill something.

I'm not surprised. My dad had a german shorthaired pointer shot by fish and game officer who claimed the dog was killing deer ( my dad lived on the edge of town so there were deer in the area ). The dog was about 40lbs and not aggressive ever it just liked to run and chase and it jumped the six foot fence once or twice and ran up the hill.
The thought that a dog that size could chase down and kill a deer is silly. There were also coyotes and occasionally mountain lions in the area which were probably the culprits of any deer killing.

Something has gone seriously wrong with our increasingly quasi-militarized police. Too often it's shoot first, cast blame later.

There seems to be a now-common attitude that everything starts out as a life-threatening threat. That obviously is not tenable, because police officers by definition have to go into dangerous situations. That's part of why people are supposed to respect them. They lose that respect when they're shooting everything up, or tazering handcuffed people until they have a heart attack. Etc.

Black person?

I was thinking of a trial a few years back in Carolina somewhere, part of which I saw on TV. A young white police officer was actually on trial for having shot and killed an equally young black athlete for being black. The deceased's car had broken down at night, he had gone to a nearby house, knocked on the door seeking assistance. The cops were called, and the actual shooting was recorded by the police dashcam.

The deceased was approaching the police car, hands in the air, clearly no threat at all. He was unarmed.

The young police office on trial was on the stand, expressing his fear of the approaching man. The young cop should never have been hired, but he was. He completely broke down in tears regarding the fear he felt at the approaching black man. It was Carolina, but it was very sad to see such an afraid young man wearing the uniform.

The dog was clearly not obeying orders.

A wagging tail does not mean much. It all depends on the wag.

This is one of the signs that many people find surprising. Dog trainers often hear dog owners comment that their dog was wagging his tail right up until the moment he bit someone. But pay attention to the way your dog wags his tail.

A happy dog may wag his tail and get his whole body involved. A dog who is about to bite is usually fairly rigid, and his tail will be pointed high and moving more quickly back and forth. This may be a sign of an impending dog bite.

The tail-wag on the dog in the video was a nervous tail wag, not a friendly one.

But, of course. Don't let that rain on your cop-bashing thread. :)

Even if it was a nervous tail wag. What deadly threat was there?

Part of the issue is that when you have 700,000 full-time officerrs (1.2 mil if you count all people with Arrest-rights) you are undobtedly going to get a couple "bad apples," so the question is, is it even possible to use reformed training, or any other such measures, to weed out the ****ty cops?

Of course a dog may be "nervous" if a stranger shows up in its territory and starts making loud noises at it. If nervous wags are an excuse to shoot dogs and you're defending it, you're defending an overall situation where cops are allowed to shoot whatever pets they happen to find on someone's property.

I'd say that policy has no business in this country.

The video is disturbing. There was no reason to shoot two innocent dogs in their own yard when they were clearly not a threat.

I concur. Thankfully none of the dogs were killed, and also that the owner reached their goal on GoFundMe.

It was a BURGLARY call!

Why weren't the dogs chasing the BURGLAR??????? Why were they off topic and threatening a cop????????

Obviously the dogs needed better training.

homeowner should sue. this is a civil issue. still they should sue.
destruction of private property at the least.

On the other hand, it only took ONE Staffordshire pit bull to kill this man......bystanders couldn't save him.

The cop was well aware of what two of them could do to him.

Man attacked by own Staffordshire bull terrier dog dies - BBC News

Of course......all the cop-haters would much rather see a dead cop than see a dog get shot.

And for God's sake.......if your child needs a psychological comfort dog.......get him a golden retriever, not TWO dogs specifically bred as killers!

That is a seriously disturbing trend that I have noticed for quite some time, too. Everything is, "OMG it's so dangerous out there. We must establish standardized rationalizations for everything."

"I feared for my life" is not supposed to be a 'get out of jail free' card.

Ah, so the cop should let the dog attack him because....why exactly?

I have no idea why the cop was in the yard. But, assuming he had a legal reason to be in the yard, it is incumbent on the owner to keep the dogs away from him.

That's the other part I picked up on right away. The dog I saw get shot was clearly not Fluffy the Happy Beagle.

I agree, they looked like a couple of thugs to me. Note to all the dogs out there. If a cop tells you stay back don't walk in his general direction or else.
