Poll: Most Republicans say colleges have negative impact on US | TheHill

A majority of Republicans in a new survey think colleges and universities have a negative effect on the U.S.

The Pew Research Center poll finds 58 percent of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents think colleges and universities hurt the country.

Just 36 percent of Republicans think they have a positive effect.

In contrast, a large majority of Democrats, 72 percent, say colleges and universities have a positive effect on the country.
Overall, slightly more than half of the public, 55 percent, thinks colleges and universities help the U.S., according to the survey.

well, I guess it's true, the 'Trump demographic' truly is for the dumbing down of America; I knew it all along ............

Yep sure. Uhhhhuh.

If this is even anywhere near accurate - the implications of it are astounding.

And it does much to explain Betsy DeVos and her ilk.

Though I definitely don't agree with the Republican majority on that point, I very well understand how they could get that impression. It has been largely smooth talking university people that have led the liberal pc overshoot and pushed aside constitutional protections as well as outsourcing production. They stand for much of what the many conservatives identify as having hurt the country. They have never really explained to the lesser educated, why the think that their policies are good other than by way of slick populisms.

I guess the GOP base are all gonna quit high school, run out & get jobs as waste engineers aka a garbage man ...............

maybe America should replace 'slick populism' with 'dumb populism?'

oh, that already happened last November :2razz:

Well when you see the press coverage of campus protests, I can understand the dislike Republicans have for these safe-space-snowflakes.
However, you would have to have a pretty narrow view of universities & the education to think that they have a negative impact on society.

Education is the single most important thing a country should focus on.

Before we over-react, I suspect the poll deals mostly with political ideology, so that may explain this.

However if the respondents were voting in terms of education itself, that would be startling! (and crazy)

There's a lot I agree with here.

And it is very incumbent for all our citizens to understand the world is evolving and moving on. As long as free-market capitalism reigns as the dominate world economic system, Adam Smith's Invisible Hand will dominate. Those on the outside, have got to figure out how to place their-selves and their progeny on the inside. No one, not even Trump, can beat free-market capitalism back.

If those Republicans and Trump voters desire to remove themselves from education and economic evolution, they will fall by the personal wayside in the same manner Cuba and North Korea have fallen by the world's economic wayside.

Those voters can't be looking to their government and the President to bail them out. They're being sold lies. And they will suffer and perish. They need to self-actuate. Thy need to deal with reality. Or suffer the consequences.

A good college education will teach people how to deconstruct polls like this.

Higher ed, the press, union. All 3 overwhelmingly liberal/Democrats.

Republicans think liberal/Democrats suck.

There.
I'm sure there's a poll somewhere that shows Democrats don't view Wal Street or big busines ( or whatever things are normally identified with conservatibes /Republicans) favorably becuase Democrats think Republicans/conservatives suck.

How did higher ed and the press get to be liberal? Did they use guns in this coup?

Uh huh

42% of college grads are Republicans
49% of college grads are Democrats

10% of Americans are in unions.... and union members are not monolithically Democrats

The press is only "overwhelmingly liberal" if you ignore Fox News, talk radio, numerous media outlets owned by Murdoch, Breitbart, Weekly Standard, National Review, lots of local media, Drudge, the Internet etc etc

Actually, what we see is an across the board deterioration of trust in institutions. This apparently affects banks much more than business in general.

Plus, there are millions of Americans who don't identify with a party. I.e. not everyone is a partisan.

I doubt that very many republicans believe that higher education is bad, but I would guess that they dislike the politics.

Dumbing down? ...............very unlikely.

an.
What's that got to do with it. Colleges are run by liberals and that's the reason for the negativity in the polls.

What's the % have to do with anything. Unions and Democrats go together like a hand in glove and that the reason for the negativity in the polls.

.

You know- I relied on the liberal media for this one. Maybe I shouldn't have . Point well taken.

;)

A majority of American journalists identify themselves as political independents although among those who choose a side Democrats outnumber Republicans four to one, according to a new study of the media conducted by two Indiana University professors.

I don't get why you are getting so defensive about any of this. I wasn't making any kind of value judgment -just explaining why it is.

How did higher ed and the press get to be liberal? Did they use guns in this coup?

Good question- how'd the press ever get so liberal in the first place?
higher ed is explainable.
Those that can,do. Those that can't -teach.

LOL

So liberals took over the media through a violent coup and maintain their hold thru violent means? Face it....if the liberals control the media then conservatives are too weak and powerless to do anything about it

The uneducated voter has been a core block of the Republican party.

Is there a point here?

Yet they still make way more money than Democrats. So much for education . LAFFRIOT
Financially, Republicans fare better than either Democrats or Independents, and tend to identify themselves as such. Republican candidates gain a significantly higher percentage of votes from individuals with incomes over $50,000 per year, and the advantage increases along with the income level, to a height of 63 percent of individuals earning $200,000 or more a year supporting Republicans..

SCOREBOARD BABY!

God I do hope she shuts down your old school.

after I retired years ago they found it exceedingly difficult to go on without my services so eventually they simply closed shop. Even Babe Ruth could not say that bout his Yankees.

Is there a point here?

Yes. If the media and higher education has a liberal bias it is because that is what the public wants. No one puts a gun to anyone's head.

I doubt that very many republicans believe that higher education is bad, but I would guess that they dislike the politics.

Exactly.

All that SJA/Leftist baloney that's infested campuses across America like roaches in a sewer has undermined the learning environment. The school leadership are allowing the loonballs to run things or to cause disruptions. That kind of crap has caused Berkeley, Mizzou and Evergreen State College to become jokes.
