Trump wants to keep new immigrants from getting welfare — which is already law

And how would a law requiring someone to be in the country 5 years stop people from stealing SSNs?

A travel ban would discourage the stealing of SSN's.

Read the chart or Google it. SNAP only.

Don't get me started on disability. I know too many people who's only disability is too many drugs. But we weren't talking about disability, just food stamps.

2017 is post Trump, so we could say the decrease is due to President Trump's policies.

You could say this if you were partisan, but what is really the truth? How much Obama and how much has Trump in the last six months? Or is has it actually grown since Obama, or will it? Are they just kicking people off?

What do you mean by welfare? Women with Children? Who else can get welfare? Food stamps? If someone is so sick they can't get out and work then why should I complain if they get some food stamps to contribute to their household?

Good luck everybody, I don't know what the Hell to do about immigration.

The answer is simple. First secure our border and second enforce our laws.

What right do we have to make a law restricting migration in this hemisphere?

The responsibility lies with us, we must keep you from entering.

Or, secure the boarder and give amnesty.

Amnesty for who? The drug cartel, the ones in our prisons and jails, the drug dealers, and the gang banger having anchor babies with minors. I say amnesty for those that have not broken any of our laws. Opps they are all law breakers with no respect for our immigration laws or the people of this country. There are millions of law abiding people all over the world waiting to come to our country legally. We do not need to reward scum for circumventing and breaking our laws.

The people of this country determine who they will allow to come into our country not lawless scumbags from other countries with no respect for our people or our laws.

I think you're just hung up on a false sense of proprietor ship, "our Country," well, the Presidents view pervaded in the election, so good luck, good thing I'm not an immigrant. Look at how we treated the Native People.

Trump wants to keep new immigrants from getting welfare ? which is already law | TheHill

President Trump in a rally on Wednesday evening said immigrants who enter the United States should not be eligible for welfare benefits for five years, though such a law has already existed for 20 years.

At least he shouldn't have any trouble making this law.

The current law is not effective at all, seeing as the amount of new arrivals using welfare is a rather massive amount already. So this is an attempt to fix a law that doesn't work to begin with.

I think it's smart of Trump to say he will do things that are already done. He is building a fake list of accomplishments he can cart out if he runs for re-election.

Too bad Obama has taken all the room in that life boat, screw the women & children though. Because he was all to willing to let that ship sink with everyone else.

We as a country have every right to determine who is allowed to enter this country. Just like every other country has that right to limit who enters their country. What kind of whack job ideology leads you to not realize that

Please don't spout fact in earshot of such people. The bubbled echo chamber must be maintained.

President Trump in a rally on Wednesday evening said immigrants who enter the United States should not be eligible for welfare benefits for five years, though such a law has already existed for 20 years.

At least he shouldn't have any trouble making this law.

Among the findings:

An estimated 49 percent of households headed by legal immigrants used one or more welfare programs in 2012, compared to 30 percent of households headed by natives.

Households headed by legal immigrants have higher use rates than native households overall and for cash programs (14 percent vs. 10 percent), food programs (36 percent vs. 22 percent), and Medicaid (39 percent vs. 23 percent). Use of housing programs is similar.

Legal immigrant households account for three-quarters of all immigrant households accessing one or more welfare programs.

Less-educated legal immigrants make extensive use of every type of welfare program, including cash, food, Medicaid, and housing.

The overwhelming majority of illegal immigrants have modest levels of education; therefore, the high use of welfare associated with less-educated legal immigrants indicates that legalization would likely increase welfare costs, particularly for cash and housing programs.

Restrictions on new legal immigrants’ access to welfare have not prevented them from accessing programs at high rates because restrictions often apply to only a modest share of immigrants at any one time, some programs are not restricted, there are numerous exceptions and exemptions, and some provisions are entirely unenforced. Equally important, immigrants, including those illegally in the country, can receive welfare on behalf of their U.S.-born children.

So pass the same law again? People will follow it this time because....?

I would say that he actually means to amend the law, or completely get it rewritten.
Lets be honest, when it comes to putting certain things to words, Trump is rather lacking in that regard.

I would rather have a different law though, because the current one has way too many loopholes to be abused. That is the normality of several laws it seems however.

I was just pretending for a moment that I was a liberal and was speaking in no librospeak. No President a couple hundred days in is responsible for the stats. But I hope the Trump administration is kicking people off.

I know, right?

My mom used to do the same thing when I was a little kid and couldn't understand what the grown ups were talking about.

Perhaps these memorable learning experiences with mom inspired your successful teaching career and unique style of writing?

Somebody needs to tell our state officials about this law apparently they never heard of it!

So a law that was already on the books didn't stop them, therefore we need the same law passed again?

I didn't say that there were no immigrants getting welfare. I said the law was already in force. How would another law that does the same thing keep it from being broken?

Trump's proposal would build on the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996, which allows federal authorities to deport immigrants who become public dependents within five years of their arrival. Many of that law’s provisions were rolled back during the George W. Bush and Barack Obama administrations, but Trump's proposal would make more categories of federal benefits off-limits to immigrants.

Is he an ass acting like it's a new law and he's the hero? Yes. Is MSM assholes for spinning this so aggressively? Yes. Has other presidents claimed credit for things they haven't really initiated, but improved? Yes.

I think you're just hung up on a false sense of proprietor ship, "our Country," well, the Presidents view pervaded in the election, so good luck, good thing I'm not an immigrant. Look at how we treated the Native People.

Sorry but this is our country. We the People decide the law of our land not Mexico or any other country. To be fair we should allow a certain amount of people from every country to come to this country. We decide who is allowed. I personally don't want terrorist, rapist, murderers, or an other criminals from other countries. Immigration by law abiding people make this country great. Lawless scum with no respect for our laws, our culture, and our people do not make this country great. Sorry but that is the truth.

And how would a law requiring someone to be in the country 5 years stop people from stealing SSNs?

It would encourage it, I would think.

But then I support a 5 year wait. People should be coming here for opportunity to succeed, not just to exist. I'm willing to take the trade-off for that.
