Federal Government Contractor in Georgia Charged With Removing and Mailing Classified

Re: https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/federal-government-contractor-georgia-charged-remo

This is the sort of thing which has been HIGHLY encouraged by the atmosphere surrounding the so-called #Resistance movement, with leakers being hailed as heroes, news cycles breathlessly and irresponsibly driven by legions of anonymous sources, government agencies setting up "rogue" accounts to defy the Administration, etc., etc.

She's not the only one, and she won't be the last.

Which is what I've been saying, Snowden got a movie made about him, Manning is hailed as as freed hero...

And we wonder why this Ms. Winner thinks her move was a brilliant one?

Re: https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/federal-government-contractor-georgia-charged-remo

Not to worry, air traffic is next.

You do realize most of the world runs on a semi-private system right?

Re: Looks like the FBI caught themselves a leaker

A paywall prevents me from reading the whole story.

Do you really think these two things are equal and the same?

Related ? Absolutely, the DHS tried 10 seperate times to hack into the Georgia database.
Why would the DHS need to illegally attempt to hack into Georgia's voter database ?

That'll never pass congress.

As I said - I tried to read the story but a paywall prevented me from doing so. So I have no idea as to the specifics, the details or anything else about this.

Probably was a bad idea to privatize elements of the government dealing with top-secret information.

Perhaps not. Using compartmentalized software development, for example, is actually a plus for security. If no single party can code or access the entire system (for modification) then the chances of sabotage from within are greatly reduced. The process for issuing a security clearance is identical for government employees and government contractors. I have done programming work on highly classified systems as a contractor and, in the most sensitive cases, it was on a six month only basis; get in, make the requested changes and then get out which greatly limits the possibility of doing anything outside the scope of your intended (authorized?) modifications to the code.

Re: Looks like the FBI caught themselves a leaker

Susan Rice said the unmaskings were legal and that the Intel community was being closely monitored to prevent abuses right after she said she " knew nothing " about the surveillance and unmasking of Trump associates.

This has nothing to do with Bush

'Cocaine Cowboy' GW Bush started the offensive of ramping up massive internal spying on US citizens within the US as part of his response to the false flag operation 9/11

if spying is going on then sooner, or later, leaks are bound to happen

one other thing 'Cocaine Cowboy' GW Bush did in response to 9/11; he started a dumbass war in Iraq .................. what a guy he was ............

that war is still going on today .............. the war that keeps on giving ...........

And that has what to do with fixing something that's not broken?

It is broken, hell when I went through Air Traffic Controller (A School) in Millington TN, we still were using a ping pong table and model airplanes, the radar equipment was from the 60's! I know it's been upgraded but a lot of the tech is behind the times and the system is flawed.

[h=1]Federal Government Contractor in Georgia Charged With Removing and Mailing Classified Materials to a News Outlet[/h]
"A criminal complaint was filed in the Southern District of Georgia today charging Reality Leigh Winner, 25, a federal contractor from Augusta, Georgia, with removing classified material from a government facility and mailing it to a news outlet, in violation of 18 U.S.C. Section 793(e).

Winner was arrested by the FBI at her home on Saturday, June 3, and appeared in federal court in Augusta this afternoon.

“Exceptional law enforcement efforts allowed us quickly to identify and arrest the defendant,” said Deputy Attorney General Rod J. Rosenstein. “Releasing classified material without authorization threatens our nation’s security and undermines public faith in government. People who are trusted with classified information and pledge to protect it must be held accountable when they violate that obligation.”

A leaker is caught. The news outlet provided the evidence that led to her.

Thank you Mr. Garrick.

What a name.

What a shame. 25 years old and a rough time ahead.

I wonder if she can plead TDS insanity.

Young, cute, blonde....Shes going to get tired of winning in prison pretty quickly.

I'd like to know why she had that much access. But that answer is certainly some secret we'll never hear of again.

How is any of that related the illegal unmaskings for Political purposes that happened under Obama ?

You people said this never happened by the way.

Re: Looks like the FBI caught themselves a leaker

Obama's DHS tried to hack Georgia's voter registration database at least 10 times..https://www.google.com/amp/www.cnbc...ack-of-georgias-election-database-report.html

The " Russians ", huh ?

I think this is about #5 for this identical talking point. You're doing good - keep it up and you'll get it posted a dozen times today!

Of course it has nothing to do with anything under discussion, but that's the point I think - divert the thread.

How would you know whether or not this is related ?
You still think Comey is a credible witness and your selective outrage over hacking into our states voter registration database means you dont have any credillity either.

Its ok for Obama's DHS to do it multiple times but ZOMG Russia !!!.
Lol !

Updating technology can be done without privatizing it.

Top cat...

Two years ago, the Transportation Department’s inspector general warned that the cost could be double or triple that $40 billion amount and that full implementation might take a decade longer than the FAA’s 2025 target date.

The FAA has spent about $6 billion on the project so far.

The lack of swift progress has been the subject of numerous reports by the Government Accountability Office and the Transportation Department’s inspector general. One of the most critical, however, came last year from the National Research Council.

The council succinctly said that “the original vision for NextGen is not what is being implemented today” and that “not all parts of the original vision will be achieved in the foreseeable future.”
It goes on to point out that having a bureaucratic system as we do now, impedes progress, Government isn't able to make the changes required fast enough to keep up with technology, a non-profit ATC would.

Re: Looks like the FBI caught themselves a leaker

You really think the USA could convince enough other nations to join that futile effort to make a difference?
If Hillary was POTUS, do you think she could bring Putin to bay...or that she would even make the attempt? Didn't she give Russia a stupid button to do a reset or something. :lamo

Last I looked, the USA does not have the wherewithal to affect the actions of a small country, let alone one like Russia or China. :doh

.

Look again....Obama obtained multilateral sanctions against Russia that hurt it's oligarchs so much they decided to meddle in our elections to get them removed. And there is plenty more we can do. We can get nations to stop buying Russia's asbestos for instance. That is something we should do anyway to stop them from spreading that poison to 3rd world countries.

And if that is what it was, that website stated in their article that it was top secret. so they knowingly and intentionally printed classified information. They should be prosecuted too.

For what? The media has no legal obligation to protect our classified information. They never signed a legally binding non-disclosure agreement.

It currently is not illegal for the media to publish classified information they receive.

The journalist is in possession of the physical document. That...is illegal.

By God I hope you're right.

There are slews of repubs in congress who are against it. They tried this a year or two ago and failed badly even with republicans

Doesn't matter. Time after time the courts have ruled the First Amendment trumps the Espionage Act of 1917. In fact, the only people to ever successfully be prosecuted for revealing or mishandling classified information are government employees who signed NDAs.

I can't say for sure it's not "illegal" because I'm not a lawyer, but can you cite any case where a news org was prosecuted for receiving classified information and publishing its contents? Every major news outlet in the world has almost surely at one time published classified material and I've never seen them prosecuted for it. On occasion journalists are jailed for failing to reveal their sources, and therefore contempt of court, but never for receiving classified docs that I know of.

Besides, in this case NSA needs to give an award to the Intercept for outing the leaker. Can't imagine they'd prosecute them after being so helpful in giving up their own source, likely twice - once by sharing the actual document with the government then later publishing the doc with the identifiers easily read. Great job Glenn Greenwald and crew!
