The articles' headline was too long for the thread title:

White House advisors called Ottawa to urge Trudeau to help talk Trump down from scrapping NAFTA

Well, i found this particularly troubling:

White House staff called the Prime Minister’s Office last month to urge Justin Trudeau to persuade President Donald Trump not to tear up the North American Free Trade Agreement, according to multiple Canadian government sources.
...
You never know how much of it is theatre, but it didn’t feel that way,” said one senior Canadian diplomatic source, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly about the matter. “Maybe they’re just learning how to be a government. At least they were open to the conversation, and that stopped them doing something rash and destructive.”

It's pretty clear that this president has no idea what he's doing.

Whicb White House advisors? This reaks of some misinformation.

The legal argument is that since Congress passed this, it is up to Congress to approve withdrawing from NAFTA. Next he is playing games and some people suck it up like free food and an open bar

What’s more, Trump might not have the lawful authority to yank the United States out of the agreement—it’s a matter of debate. Many experts believe that, under Section 125 of the Trade Act of 1974, the president possesses the authority to unilaterally withdraw from trade agreements, including NAFTA. But it’s somewhat uncharted legal territory, and not all agree. Since Congress enacted NAFTA’s provisions by passing a federal law called the Implementation Act, Johnson argues, which doesn’t grant the president the power to withdraw from NAFTA unilaterally, he can’t act on his own. “Since NAFTA was approved by Congress under the authority expressly granted to Congress under the Commerce Clause, it follows that only Congress has the power to reverse that approval and cause the United States to withdraw from NAFTA,” he concludes.

That could forestall Trump from attempting a Brexit of his own. In Britain, the decision to leave the EU was ultimately up to Theresa May. But in North America, a different “may” could still keep the United States in NAFTA.
After all Treaties- Trade agreements need Congressional approval. Yes-No - Other?
Could end up at SCOTUS??

You don't trust the White House advisors? Not terribly surprising.

Never said that. Miss the point again?

Never said that. Miss the point again?

Why did you say "sure it is" then post that information to respond to my claim that there no new evidence? Lose the ability to read again?

Thank you WH advisers. Don't know who you all are but thanks.

Trump has proven he is ignorant of the checks and balances. Do I believe he would say something as ignorant as tearing up NAFTA, yes. Do I believe this leak, not this time.

Guess no one heard of good cop / bad cop?

How often has Trump done this to you? Yes, you, the fauxraged.

OK, so let's cover this once again.

  1. Trump makes statements that appear to be extreme
  2. Trump Tweets something that's outrageous
  3. Trump adopts an extreme position (such as wanting to can NAFTA)
  4. Trump watches the reaction of his opposition
  5. If he doesn't get the reaction he wants, he withdraws his position a little at a time until a deal can be made
Got it? OK? It's how the guy negotiates.

Don't let all this posturing and shadow boxing get your shorts in an uproar. Lay back a bit and just watch what happens for awhile before jumping to premature conclusions and condemnations. Who knows? You may even start to enjoy the spectacle of it all.

Or hell, get your shorts in an uproar. It'd kinda fun to watch you all in such a tizzy all the time.

Yes, it is extremely different from any other president that has come before who has done politicking or negotiating. So much so, its interesting to watch how it puts the opposition (whomever that may be) on their left foot almost all the time.

Considering it got everyone to the table to negotiate it was the perfect move.

Got them to the table and pretty quickly as well, and on his terms, at least initially, which would be a strong starting position for Trump.

Re: White House advisors called Ottawa to urge Trudeau to help talk Trump down from s

Well many have made their opinions known.... I personally thought NAFTA needed to be renegotiated because the U.S. was getting the short end of the stick!

Because Trump was so blatantly against NAFTA throughout the campaign, Mexico and Canada have both called for renegotiations. They do not want to see NAFTA fold because they profit greatly from it. But now that Canada and Mexico are very much willing to renegotiate the trade deal, I believe the U.S. will now get a better shake in the deal.

Agreed. Good business is when it's a win-win. Sure wish that the US OEMs would learn that in their tier 1 supply chain relations.

You think forcing Trudeau do to his homework for him is going to convince Trudeau to bring him favorable terms?

That just seems wrong on its face.

There's no homework here. Only who has the stronger negotiating position. At present, seems like Trump would have that, but we'll see how this turns out.

Actually the point, which flew over your head, was YOUR decrying the Canadian government when it's the Trump Administration that lies like a cheap rug...

I never said Trump's crew leaked this, try to concentrate... :peace

Re: White House advisors called Ottawa to urge Trudeau to help talk Trump down from s

Partisan much?

can't organize your thoughts to make just one post in response to my single post??? :doh

Let me respond-

What partisan??? you looking in a mirror again? Trump and his crew think they can lie without regard and BOTH sides of the aisle think that...

But i doubt the Canadians are worried, the Bluffer in Chief has no real desire to pull out of Nafta, more like a worn out negotiating 'tactic' pretty much everyone is now laughing at...

Re: White House advisors called Ottawa to urge Trudeau to help talk Trump down from s

These people believed every random-ass anonymous thing they heard about Hillary Clinton and now they're all source-crazy.

They'll still post **** from Breitbart and The Blaze and whine when us darn liberals attack the source.

This will give Canada a chance to get back the water rights that were negotiated away in the last deal.
