The Australian, which says it got its hands on some leaked internal Facebook documents.

The 23-page document allegedly revealed that the social network provided detailed data about teens in Australia—including when they felt “overwhelmed” and “anxious”—to advertisers. The creepy implication is that said advertisers could then go and use the data to throw more ads down the throats of sad and susceptible teens.

I, personally, think this is sickening and despicable behavior by a corporate entity to exploit teenagers, not that it's probably that unusual. Especially considering what tobacco companies did for decades. But if corporations are going to rake in such outrageous profits as Facebook does, they should have some moral obligation to protect their clientele from potentially damaging techniques.

What's the problem? If a teenager is depressed they may want products for it.

Don't suppose you have a source other than Gizmodo do you? They're not exactly known for their...umm...reliability....

Isn't that just creepy?

They've employed the methods of the 'drug dealer' and tech genius combined.

My Opinion?

Caveat Emptor. Let the buyer beware.

I don't use social media. I don't feel the need to share my innermost feelings with a couple of million of my "closest friends."

I don't buy or sell anything on the internet either.

Anonymous debate sites like this...fine.

Kids should be out associating with their peers in the real world, and not developing fantasies of popularity via the internet.

They "share" too much, and tend to regret it when older (although adults are just as foolish from what I've seen).

People need to realize that the Internet is an electronic "public space" and whatever you put out there stays out there for all to see (and use) as long as the internet exists.

Anyone who doesn't understand the lack of privacy on the internet is naive beyond description. Don't want Facebook to sell your information? Don't post on Facebook. Since it is legal behavior, then it can't be despicable. Talk to your congressman about privacy protection legislation.

It is the nature of targeted advertising. It is no more despicable than putting diaper ads in front of a woman with a newborn.

Legality doesn't imply anything more that legality. It doesn't imply "right" or "moral" or "not despicable."

With the rather large difference that now the advertiser knows your name and a bunch of other things about you and can annoy the crap out of you with ads.

Sure, but lets say they are selling ads to depressed teenagers. Those ads might help them seek treatment or medication for depression, or give them the number of a suicide help line or something. It is hard to really say based on such a slanted article about the topic. If you are targeting laxatives to anorexics you may be going too far, there is a lot of gray on this subject. I try to avoid clicking on an online ad at all costs no matter how appealing it might be. Video ads are the ones that are hardest to avoid. The others my brain has gotten to the point it just overlooks them.

I accept your comment. I view what members of congress do as fairly despicable but certainly legal.

It's long been known that Facebook takes keywords from posts and yes, even your private messages, in order to feed relevant content back to you.

After their major privacy policy change in 2011 I deactivated my account permanently. Google is another big problem right now, getting worse by the year.
