SYDNEY (Reuters) - U.S. Vice President Mike Pence said on Saturday the United States would honor a controversial refugee deal with Australia, under which the United States would resettle up to 1,250 asylum seekers, a deal President Donald Trump had described as "dumb".Pence told a joint news conference with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull that the deal would be subject to vetting, and that honoring it "doesn't mean that we admire the agreement".
"We will honor this agreement out of respect to this enormously important alliance," Pence said at Turnbull's harbor side official residence in Sydney.
Australia is one of Washington's staunchest allies and has sent troops to fight alongside the U.S. military in conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Under the deal, agreed with former President Barack Obama late last year, the United States would resettle up to 1,250 asylum seekers held in offshore processing camps on South Pacific islands in Papua New Guinea (PNG) and Nauru.

Kudos to the Trump administration for honoring what it criticized as "dumb". I am glad that reality is finally hitting the Trump administration. I'm sure Bannon supporters will be ticked, but elections have consequences.

:)

NO problem. I am sure we have some isolated islands of our own out there in the South Pacific that would provide a nice place to resettle them. Then again, they can also be resettled...right back where they came from. :coffeepap:

I'll change my opinion entirely if they're dumped off in an American wasteland like the Aleutian Islands or New Jersey.

Disgusting. The U.S. is now the dumping ground for everyone else's undesirables. Not that it matters, this is going to be another nail in Trump's coffin.

You refer to these hman beings as undesirable?

A personal attack...nothing original about that. :lamo

Looks like Pence is acting as the new KellyAnne Conway.

"No, that's not what you heard or saw from Trump. What it really is, is ... "

Why don't the Aussies want them? Are they racists? Islamophobes?

I'll never understand some people. It is one thing to think America shouldn't be in the business of taking in refugees while many of our own people are in need. I disagree, but I understand. What I don't understand are the people who spew vitriol and demonize a group of people who find themselves in such dire circumstances.

Great post!

How about deplorable? Does that work better for you?

Man you guys are still triggered about that word :lamo

I hope you find a safe space soon.

The Aussies did background checks on them and determined that they were criminals and terrorists. Obama is in love with those types of people so he signed the treaty. I'm not sure what the hell Trump is thinking unless this was a dictate from that idiot Jared Kushner.

They're not in dire circumstances at all. They want to go to the country that offers the best welfare benefit. That's why Sweden and Germany were initially overrun. Australia didn't want these criminals and so America is dumping this on the U.S. I just can't understand why Trump wants these criminals in our country.

Interesting you have these feelings over individuals you've never met, nor know their Bio's or CV's?

Ahhhh! So we have folks in this thread who are applauding America taking in known criminals and terrorists.

I hope they aren't still wondering why the Democrats keep losing.

Are you going to put a few of them up at your place?

That's an odd response since it was you who was somehow 'triggered' by a word from another poster. Plus I get that you lefties are desperate to distance yourselves from the silliness of 'safe spaces' but those are a creation of the left exclusively for the use of lefties, so you are stuck with it. Nice try, but sorry.

Interesting you have these feelings over individuals you've never met, nor know their Bio's or CV's?

I have no feelings whatsoever for them. I was asking another poster if he preferred one word over another that seems to have him 'triggered.'

Notice how my sentences ended in a question mark. That should have clued you in. But apparently not.

Are you going to put a few of them up at your place?
No, but I'm surely not going to call them 'deplorable' with not knowing them or of them.
