Nixon’s Lawyer John Dean: Trump White House in 'Cover-Up Mode'

In accusing former President Barack Obama of ordering Trump Tower wiretapped before last year's presidential election, President Donald Trump compared the alleged behavior to "Nixon/Watergate."

But John Dean, a former White House counsel under former President Richard Nixon who was charged with obstruction of justice for his role in Watergate, said it's Trump – not Obama – whose behavior reminds him of the scandal that forced Nixon from office.

"I was more stunned by the reaction of the White House and their handling of it, which seemed to me over-the-top," Dean said of the Trump administration's response to Monday's House intelligence committee hearing on the subject

"In fact they are in a cover-up mode. There's just never been any question in my mind about that," Dean said. "I've been inside a cover-up. I know how they look and feel. And every signal they're sending is 'we're covering this up.'"

"This White House is not showing their innocence," he said. "They're showing how damn guilty they are, is what we're seeing."

Interesting observation by former Nixon White House counsel

For those of us old enough to remember Watergate, the Trump WH has reeked of cover-up since almost the beginning. If they are not trying to hide something, stop acting guilty.

We shall see.

Since almost the beginning? We are at almost the beginning.

Since almost the beginning? We are at almost the beginning.

Which makes it even more alarming, most administrations get mired in scandal second term, Trump just could not wait, Obama wiretapped my phone bwahaha

We shall, but one thing is certain. Whatever the outcome, one side of this will not accept the results.

You think it is that far gone?

I don't want to look it up, but I thought the crime was committed in the first term and was already known when Tricky was reelected.

But I was only remarking on the odd turn of tongue.

I meant in general, example Iran Contra second term, Monika L second term. Watergate was not a factor in the 1972 election, thought the actual burglary took place in June 72. The scandal broke well into Nixons second term, thanks to the press.

I think that either left or right is going to lose big. At this point I'm forced to agree with Dean that the administration looks like they're trying to cover something up. They may not have anything to cover up, in which case it's their own fault for looking bad.

August 1974?

The month that Nixon resigned, followed by the GOP getting pounded in the 1974 midterms.

The huge difference is that DEMs controlled the committees then, not now.

And we're infinitely more divided now compare to then .

It happened during the first term, but It was during the re-election campaign, so the scandal didn't really break until the second term.

Nixon should have been brought up on charges of high treason for interfering with Vietnam peace talks during the 1968 election. We saw the same election interference in 1980. Now we're living through GOP treachery again .

I am not rabid anti GOP, I have voted GOP on numerous occasions. Trump is different, he is mentally unbalanced, and I will do whatever it takes within the law to see him forced out, or at the very least receive treatment for his personality disorder, which will never happen. Impeachment may come into play later, but as of now he has not committed a high crime to warrant such action from a GOP Congress. However, he has wasted tax payers $ with this accusation, and changed his story a couple times, he wasted the time of FBI agents, when they should be out there protecting us, not getting sent on some wild goose chase ala private investigators chasing Obamas BC. Donny can spend his own money trying to prove a delusion created by his fragile ego at 3AM.

This is just an opinion but it looks like Trump KNOWS there's something out there that will be a bombshell that will ruin him, something so big that even most of his lemmings will say 'enough'. And Trump is very afraid this 'bombshell' will become public.

He's acting weirder and more paranoid than usual.

Agreed. I have many several posts here going back to the early days of the Trump regime saying that this feels more like Watergate than any other so called scandal in the last forty years. And with every week it only gets more and more similar.

People should listen to John Dean as he was front and center in Watergate and knows it better than probably any person alive today. When he says this looks like much the same cover up - he is the voice of wisdom born of practical experience.

I believe you will find articles focusing on the break in and the Administration's involvement before the election.

The administration looks like it is a mess. But my take is still a guarded belief that they are just inexperienced and dilettante

Nothing like wasting FBI time with a baseless claim, Trump should pony up, its a tax right off, his specialty.

I would have considered that a high point of our democracy in which it passed a dangerous test.

Very few.

The war and the anti-war protests were mostly on people's mind in Nov. 1972. Watergate broke big time after the election.

It wasn't that I didn't know, what happened in August. It was more that I thought it a success of our democratic rules based system.
