Nixon’s Lawyer John Dean: Trump White House in 'Cover-Up Mode'

Very few.

The war and the anti-war protests were mostly on people's mind in Nov. 1972. Watergate broke big time after the election.

I suspect it might have been a situation of selective perception.

This is just an opinion but it looks like Trump KNOWS there's something out there that will be a bombshell that will ruin him, something so big that even most of his lemmings will say 'enough'. And Trump is very afraid this 'bombshell' will become public.

He's acting weirder and more paranoid than usual.

Which is why I believe GOP lawmakers won't throw their seats away on trumpcare or any other trump/Bannon issue .

I suspect it might have been a situation of selective perception.

There was only 3 networks then. No 24/7 news. AM radio played rock n roll. No Internet. You weren't bombarded by the news then.

The Washington Post broke the story, and ran with it before the election. But most other papers and the networks pretty much ignored it. It wasn't until early 1973 that the FBI started to release details and other news sources became interested.

I would have considered that a high point of our democracy in which it passed a dangerous test.

The Nixon divide was like our Grand Canyon. The trump divide is like the Mars Grand Canyon .

It wasn't that I didn't know, what happened in August. It was more that I thought it a success of our democratic rules based system.
Ah.

Well, don't hope for such a noble ending with the GOP in charge of us.

In accusing former President Barack Obama of ordering Trump Tower wiretapped before last year's presidential election, President Donald Trump compared the alleged behavior to "Nixon/Watergate."

But John Dean, a former White House counsel under former President Richard Nixon who was charged with obstruction of justice for his role in Watergate, said it's Trump – not Obama – whose behavior reminds him of the scandal that forced Nixon from office.

"I was more stunned by the reaction of the White House and their handling of it, which seemed to me over-the-top," Dean said of the Trump administration's response to Monday's House intelligence committee hearing on the subject

"In fact they are in a cover-up mode. There's just never been any question in my mind about that," Dean said. "I've been inside a cover-up. I know how they look and feel. And every signal they're sending is 'we're covering this up.'"

"This White House is not showing their innocence," he said. "They're showing how damn guilty they are, is what we're seeing."

THis guy has been wrong before, but I agree with him here.

I meant in general, example Iran Contra second term, Monika L second term. Watergate was not a factor in the 1972 election, thought the actual burglary took place in June 72. The scandal broke well into Nixons second term, thanks to the press.

The 37th president of the United States resigned his office August 9th, 1974. It is a day I STILL celebrate. It was the only time in a 30 year long career in journalism where I was put on the carpet for bias. I simply could NOT keep the joy out of my voice when I read the item.

I have always had a great deal of respect for Dean. It doesn't mention it in the OP, but he's the man who revealed the existence of the famous "White House tapes". Even when recognized as the self serving gesture it was, it took a lot of huevos to come forward considering the criminal atmosphere of the Nixon White House.

I am surprised to see him weigh-in on this, but I don't doubt a word he says...and he's right. Trump and co. have been in cover-up mode since the beginning.

Yes. The significant things were not as much buried in pounds of noise. I haven't looked at the Nixon sequence of events in some time. But I believe the IHT ran the story too.

The only people getting desperate right now are traditional GOP voters and GOP lawmakers.

Even GOP governors up for reelection in 2018 hate trump's budget, not to mention trumpcare .

It was one of the high points of our system of political organization and culture.

It happened during the first term, but It was during the re-election campaign, so the scandal didn't really break until the second term.

Already stated in post 27

No, I don't think that's true. Witness the desperation in the media, and within the leaderless democratic party.

It remains to be seen what the final packages will look like. That's why the left is making so many wild accusations now. It's called crowd control when thinking of the left followers.

I think that either left or right is going to lose big. At this point I'm forced to agree with Dean that the administration looks like they're trying to cover something up. They may not have anything to cover up, in which case it's their own fault for looking bad.

I opine that the current administration has more to cover up than every landfill in the country. ;)

How's the Buffalo Bribe affecting the Freedom Caucus?

How about the rest of the changes Bannon/Price are making to trumpcare to buy off wary GOP house members that Ryan is not controlling?

Will the CBO be able to score these new trump/Bannon changes ?

I guess we'll have to wait for the bill to pass before we know what's in it........

IMO, that is the ONLY thing that POS Nixon ever did worth while in his entire life, period ..............

maybe, just maybe, Trump will do the same & be a 1/2 way decent POS .............

Nixon should have been brought up on charges of high treason for interfering with Vietnam peace talks during the 1968 election. We saw the same election interference in 1980. Now we're living through GOP treachery again .

I believe Ford did the right thing in Nixons pardon, even though it cost him the election in 76. Impeachment would only divide us even further. Mr Trump would need to commit a serious a crime for me to endorse impeachment, as of now he has committed no crimes. other than sending the FBI on a wild goose chase and wasting tax payer $, and that one really is still out until we have the full report from the FBI, but certainly appears Trump lied and wasted tax money on a bogus charge. My big concern is his personality disorder, which has imagined a felony committed against Trump from his predecessor, and I ask myself does the Don actually believe his own lies, I believe he does, which would explain him digging in his heels, and that folks. is scarier than hell. How low can he go, as low as it takes to protect his own self image.

My only two GOP votes for President were against Carter and I certainly regret the 2nd one.

My Father voted against Ford because he blamed him for signing into law an income tax on Veteran's pensions. He was also a conservative Democrat but voted against HHH and voted for IKE.

Here in IL, my teacher's pension is not taxed on the state level. It should be, on a means-tested basis, beginning at about 150% of poverty in a progressive way to a maximum level on those making more than $100,000 a year on their public pension. We're broke in IL. There are plenty of other good fixes but my generation is too selfish .

Trump has accused Obama of a FELONY ................. DUH ..............

A bit early to put bets on that. Obamacare is failing, so something has to be done. The battle has just begun.

The battle over the spin of the GOP talking point that 'Obamacare is failing' has just begun.

The media isn't doing their jobs checking GOP lawmakers when they spew that lie .
