Google adds tool to flag 'offensive' search results

Google adds tool to flag 'offensive' search results - Story | WNYW

As an aside, if you visit Google Cuba News , there doesn't appear to be any anti-revolutionary content. It seems that Google is just fine and dandy with censorship.

From the source:

While flagging something doesn't directly affect the search results themselves, it's used to tweak the company's software so that better content ranks higher. This approach might, for instance, push down content that is inaccurate or has other questionable attributes, thereby giving prominence to trustworthy sources.

Google already uses algorithms to rank content based on multiple criteria. This is nothing more. The only effect it might have is lowering the ranking of some sites.

Sounds like the YouTube Heroes program, but for their search engine results.

A terrible idea.

Yep. That's exactly what I was thinking. It's a good thing Google initiated this quietly.

I'm not a google user for good reasons. This is just one more good reason.

If you regularly click the "offensive" links, that means google will show you those links more often. What's the problem?

I'm glad that breitbard, Alex Jones, and Milo Yiannopolous are already gethering their troll army as is 4chan. Google has accidentally opened the floodgate to allow conservatives to downgrade the NYT, WaPo, CNN, and other fake news generators.

I wonder how many of you anti-googlers have an android phone or a gmail account...

Google search results are already incredibly superficial and populist, which is why it's a good idea to learn how to refine your search. If you imagine the internet like an ocean, most searches only skim the surface while leaving a huge amount of content unseen.

It's not going to matter to me one way or another what the top search results are or how they're being affected by people's sensibilities. I'm going to find what I need using other methods. Google already accepts money to bump worthless content to the top, so it's not like an "offensive" button is going to change the value of anything.

No, they haven't.

It's not about what or how but about why.

"Better content"

Those two words make me nervous.
