A student activist group at the University of Michigan is demanding campus officials provide them with “a permanent designated space on central campus for Black students and students of color to organize and do social justice work.”

The demand is one of several lodged by “Students4Justice,” who this month ratcheted up campus demonstrations to pressure administrators to cave, complaining in a newly launched petition that President Mark Schlissel has snubbed their demands.

The clamor for a segregated space for students of color to organize social justice efforts comes even as the public university builds a $10 million center for black students in the center of campus.

In their demands, students explain why the new black student center is not enough, “because we want a space solely dedicated to community organizing and social justice work specifically for people of color.”

The scary thing is that this is just the tip of the iceberg of the insanity that is being promoted out there. I hope to hell the pendulum swings back to common sense soon because all this kind of stuff is just nuts as well as scary and dangerous.

I read the article. I find the demands ridiculous. They don't want to bring back "separate but equal", they want to bring back full segregation. But having said that, I'm going to play Devil's Advocate.

Where does it say "no whites allowed", either in words or implication? It seems carefully worded so that they could claim, if challenged, that they'd welcome any subservient whites willing to work their cause.
 
They can demonstrate all they want, until they start blocking or damaging anything, then arrest and expel them.
 
Why do they need a special place to meet? Why do they expect the government to pay for it? Why can't they meet in someone's apartment? Then they can discriminate and exclude to their heart's desire.

I take their demands for a paid-for venue as being a means to make a statement itself, and they're going to bully their way into it.

The students are bitch-n that the University of Texas isn't protecting them because of 4 fliers found on campus saying " Imagine a Muslim free America" Least it's something real.

They can organize their stuff themselves. They can probably even reserve a room in the Union or something and police their own members to exclude whites. I don't see why the University would need to produce a specific and permanent "No Whitey" room.

If it is a space dedicated for organizing minority oriented demonstrations then, meh. I don't care. Not my money. Universities have always been hotbeds of political activism. If it is a place where whites are not allowed to enter then that should obviously be forbidden and denounced.

And there is a difference between the two. It is like black churches and historically black colleges. Contrary to what some think, you don't have to be black to attend a black college. Most black colleges do have some white students. It is just most whites never consider applying for such schools. And whites are almost always accepted with open arms at black churches.

But again, if they are trying to create a space where whites, or any other ethnicity, is not allowed then that is wrong.

this is unconstitutional and well they are just going to have to get over it.
they are free to form a social justice club or whatever but they cannot restrict membership or spaces on campus for specific color of skin.

actually they can't. they are not permitted if they want a club on campus to exclude anyone that wants to join.

Many have also called out University President Mark Schlissel for not adequately affirming his support for what they believe is minority students on campus.

Wall, a member of the University’s chapter of By Any Means Necessary, expressed her disappointment in the University’s response to the posters targeting minority groups on campus that occurred earlier this year. She believes the perpetuation of bias-related incidents is contingent on the lack of administrative pushback against hate speech.
