House committee probes Russia payment to Flynn

Citing a Yahoo News interview with retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn last July, a House committee has opened an investigation into whether President Trump’s recently resigned national security adviser received an improper payment from the Russian government for a trip to Moscow in December 2015.

In an unusual bipartisan letter, House Oversight and Government Reform committee chair Rep. Jason Chaffetz and ranking minority member Rep. Elijah Cummings have asked a Washington-based speakers bureau, Leading Authorities, to turn over information on how much Flynn was paid for his appearance at an event celebrating the 10th anniversary of RT — the Russian-government funded news organization — where he sat at the same table for dinner as President Vladimir Putin. Flynn also sat for a 44-minute interview with RT anchor Sophie Shevardnadze, granddaughter of former Soviet foreign affairs minister Eduard Shevardnadze, as part of the trip.

This is almost certainly nothing....

Now this is interesting, because (I assume by necessity) it is bi-partisan.

This is a step in the tight direction.

Perhaps.

But if it opens up cracks into Flynn's phone calls and other business, then maybe we can finally get to the bottom of his relationship with Putin, and perhaps other relationships within the administration.

My first hope: A transcript of Flynn's infamous call ...

That is very interesting. An earlier German Chancellor joined Putin's payments system after helping Putin in his Saddam support and making the Eu more dependent on Russian energy. In the German's case no penalty was sought, though the damage was huge.

If there was anything to Flynn's phone call, bit would have been a part of the initial leak.

Wow. This could be huge.

Wow. This could be huge.

Everybody knew he got paid, he said so, the only thing would be if it was a million dollars or something....something that looks like a bribe or payment for other services rendered.

Maybe, maybe not.

Knowledge of the call occurring, is not the same as having access to the transcripts and being willing to give them up.

With Trump vowing to go after leakers, and his propensity to fire on the spot anyone he has a problem with, leaking the transcript or recordings might not be such an easy thing to get away with.

The leaker obviously saw the transcript, or was involved in the actual tap. How else could he know what was discussed?

Maybe.

Or maybe he heard it second-hand.

And it's obviously all conjecture, but that transcript is likely highly classified - and getting it out to the public anonymously with no backwards trail for repercussions, might not be that easy.

The NYT ran a story on annonymous, second-hand information? Um...:lamo

That's my point. Did you get it?

What?

Your point is it's funny Trump fired Flynn?
Or funny that Flynn got fired for no reason?

I'm sure that whatever you meant to say was funny.

This won't go anywhere...much to the chagrin of the left wing and the trump haters.

You suddenly love the Republican House. :lamo

It will be very interesting to see if one of Obama's appointees was on the take from the Russian government. Kind puts that whole "tell Vladimir that I'll have more flexibility after the election" thing into perspective if true.

He says as he crosses his fingers...
WHy do you think people are crossing their fingers? If this is as reported it happened in 2015 when Flynn...a registered democrat...was serving under Obama.

No, he wasn't serving under Obama in Dec., 2015. Flynn was Director of the Defense Intelligence Agency for 2 years under Obama, from July 2012 to August 2014:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_T._Flynn

"On April 30, 2014, Flynn announced his retirement effective later in 2014, about a year earlier than he had been scheduled to leave his position. He was reportedly effectively forced out of the DIA after clashing with superiors over his allegedly chaotic management style and vision for the agency.[27][28][29][30] In a private e-mail that was leaked online, Colin Powell said that he had heard in the DIA (apparently from later DIA director Vincent R. Stewart) that Flynn got fired because he was "abusive with staff, didn't listen, worked against policy, bad management, etc."[29] According to The New York Times, Flynn exhibited a loose relationship with facts, leading his subordinates to refer to Flynn's repeated dubious assertions as "Flynn facts".[31]"

Great research! The only thing you missed is that in 2016 he was a keynote speaker at the Republican National Convention and was forced out of the Obama administration for being a jerk (I'm paraphrasing that). So what you got right is that he is a registered Democrat (Zell Miller was too when he spoke at the Republican National Convention). So your conclusion is that, if Flynn did anything wrong, it's Obama's fault because at one point he worked for the Obama administration? Personal accountability out the window? How very conservative minded of you!
