Trump warns Mexico: Pay for the wall or cancel the meeting - POLITICO

President Donald Trump said Thursday that if Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto is steadfast in his promise that his nation won't pay for a wall along America’s southern border, “then it would be better to cancel the upcoming meeting” between the two leaders.

The warning, posted by Trump on Twitter Thursday morning, comes as tensions between the U.S. and its southern neighbor grow even more strained beneath the weight of the president’s campaign promises to get tough with Mexico on trade and immigration.

“The U.S. has a 60 billion dollar trade deficit with Mexico. It has been a one-sided deal from the beginning of NAFTA with massive numbers of jobs and companies lost,” Trump wrote on Twitter, breaking his message up into multiple posts. “If Mexico is unwilling to pay for the badly needed wall, then it would be better to cancel the upcoming meeting.”

Oh, this will be fun. I wonder if the Mexican president has enough cojones to cancel the meeting? :popcorn2:

This just in: Rich white man demands free handouts or else.

With all due respect, it's the opposite way around. There's no excuse for the U.S. to have a trade deficit with Mexico.

Trump said yesterday that the Mexican president has to say what he's saying, and I agree. He needs to appear strong to his own people. From CNN:

In a Monday speech, Peña Nieto said his government is prepared to negotiate with the US if Mexico's national sovereignty is respected. He laid out economic integration and respect for the rights of migrants and the money they send home as his nation's key negotiating points.

Trump has suggested some of the $25 billion in annual remittances that migrants return home would be retained to pay for the border wall -- a project Mexico opposes and which Peña Nieto has said Mexico would never pay for.

"Neither confrontation nor submission. Dialogue is the solution," Peña Nieto said Monday. Trump to Mexican president: Better to cancel our meeting - CNNPolitics.com

Cancel the meeting then. Don't be strongarmed by the rodeo clown the idiots of the U.S. made our "president."

I think he might

Mexicans have a lot of misplaced pride no matter how much it may cost their country

Wouldn't that mean that individuals are paying, and not "Mexico"?

I guess we will have to see.

Both

Mexico would miss the money if the individuals stopped sending it

In the meanwhile, leave the avocados out of it!

As trade talks loom, US stops shipment of Jalisco avocados

Excellent! Who's gonna buy those avocados now? And furthermore who cares, there's been a bizarre upswing in avocado sales everywhere. It's in my sushi, it's been offered as a free side-dish at Del Taco, it's everywhere. I have no doubt that some sort of deal was made to subsidize Mexican avocados which we really don't need.

He could off foreign aid to Mexico, raise tariffs on Mexican goods so that less people buy those goods and impose taxes on money wiring services to Mexico. He could also use some of those funds that sanctuary cities won't be getting.
I heard on the radio yesterday that Mexico is a huge importer of American wheat, soybeans and a couple other items, and that many GOP Governors from farms states are not happy at the prospect of them buying elsewhere.

If we do have a trade war, it won't be wholly one-sided.

True

I expect some compromise can be reached after a suitable cooling off period

Considering that a huge percentage of Mexico's GDP comes from remittances, I'd say they'll cave.

Russian wheat is already outselling American wheat in Mexico.

Speak for yourself!

I love me some avocado.....mmmh, I might even have an avocado taco for lunch. Need to enjoy it while I can.

I didn't say they were our biggest customer, just one of the bigger ones. Still significant regardless.

The one way Mexico could really hurt the US is by legalizing all drugs- now that would be one heck of a countermove! ;)

I don't get taxing remittances. Will we also stop mail to Mexico? People can still mail cash or even prepaid cards which can be reloaded anytime.
