Trump warns Mexico: Pay for the wall or cancel the meeting

Perhaps you can show us how "Give us what we want or don't bother to come to the table" is a negotiation?

Oh, Erlich Bachmann did this in Silicon Valley, it was hilarious (NSFW)

With all due respect, it's the opposite way around. There's no excuse for the U.S. to have a trade deficit with Mexico.

A trade deficit isnt exactly a handout is it? It just means you buy lots of their stuff.

I sort of agree with that

It sounded good on the campaign trail.

but now if trump does not follow through you will brand him a liar
News flash! We knew he was lying about this during the campaign.

And if he does follow through as he is now you will say he is being provocative
Actually, the bigger complaint is that he's going to damage the US economy and international standing, along with Mexico's economy.

"Provocation" is a much lesser charge than "****ing up the US economy."

there is no turning back now

So mexico has to pay
Mexico has to pay, because of Trump's ego? Persuasive logic. Good luck with that.

It is a preparation for a negotiation. The negotiation will likely occur sometime after the incentive (border tax) is in place. Trump is using excellent negotiation tactics.

I don't think it is the same. I think managing government like a business is perfectly sensible. "How it is done" hasn't worked so well in my view.

Last time I can recall a businessman ran a nation was Italy and he bankrupted them. The differences between business and politics is the end results can be far more disastrous for the Nation and its People than fi some business deal falls through or fails. I would also say that when making business deals between companies they usually want do business with you for the mutual good, in politics that often not the case, often the person sitting across the table is your enemy and if they can improve their Nations position and downgrade or destroy your Nation they will do it. Trump has much to learn, I hope he learns it quick because the next guys up are no minor trade partner and we are attached at the hip to their economy and they are known for not working out deals fairly, because it about Them, not us.

So your example of one applies to all businessmen? I didn't read any further than that.

I already knew that, I am surprised you read it at all.

I think the last place to see good diplomacy is among diplomats. This isn't diplomacy. It is a negotiation.

Is it? Looks to me like a refusal to negotiate.
And if there's no diplomacy among diplomats then either you or I don't understand the terms.

How so? For one thing the border wall is a dumb idea and a Stupid use of tax payer funds. It is not the best use of resources if the goal is to secure the border. Ask the people who actually live on the border!

Secondly, "Trump speak" has already harmed the Mexican economy. By imposing a "border adjustment tax", the Mexican economy will be further harmed increasing the likelihood that Mexicans will once again look to the U.S. for work-- since there has been a net 0 of Mexicans coming to the U.S. in recent years.

Thirdly, many if not most undocumented residents are people who overstayed their Visas.

You like wasting money?

So if president trump keeps his promise you hate him for being reckless and if he does not make mexico pay you hate him for being a liar?

I guess there is no point in trying to reason with you

It is called "painting yourself into a corner". Idiots do this.

No, and I don't care about a wall. I do care about the big sucking sound of our jobs, manufacturing and wealth going to Mexico. You are worried about the Mexican economy. I'm worried about the U.S. economy. That is where we differ.

There is no refusal to negotiate. The negotiation is in process. Trump has said he wants them to pay for the wall and to endure a border tax to make that happen. Now the ball is in Mexico's court.

Yes, but president trump is no idiot

for the past 18 months he has run roughshod over the real idiots in our country - the liberals in washington and the media - and made fools of them

And followers like you who want to lecture us on what trump should be doing and why you think he just made a big boo boo that will finish him

So given his track record against yours I'll take my chances with president trump

I liked this post not because I support Trump (I do not), but because Mac77 has a point. It's rather ridiculous of people on the left to keep calling Trump an idiot after he beat our collective pants off. Yes, he lost the popular vote--that wasn't the game being played, and it's just foolish to sit down at the table thinking you're playing poker when the game is chess.

Yes, some of his policies are wrongheaded, or at least seem so to me. It is a grave mistake, especially in politics, to think that someone who disagrees with you must be stupid. If liberals are wondering what happened, I can at least tell you what did not happen: we weren't beaten by a crowd of thumbsucking snake-handlers. We were beaten by a smart and disciplined opponent, and as long as we keep thinking otherwise, we're going to be caught with our pants down.

One final point: I say this because (once again) I try to broadcast the message that if we continue to fracture and fragment over political lines, our country is doomed. It might be a useful first step for everyone, conservatives and liberals, to develop some respect for the other side.

Yea, he was going to prosecute Hillary, no he's not going to prosecute Hillary.

He was going to repeal ocare day one, no he didn't. He was going to replace it with something better, universal coverage, he has no plan.

You're right, he's not an idiot. The people who believed all the lies are the idiots. We get to judge again in 4 years.

Exactly. Most liberals hate Trump so much they'll side with any foreign country against us. They're happy that jobs are being shipped overseas and making more Americans destitute.

I am realist. Manufacturing jobs are not coming back in significant numbers. Automation is taking care of that. Consumers will end up funding this stupidity. Trump's wall is a dumb pointless exercise.

There are better ways to secure the southern border.

B.T.W., U.S. farmers in my state will suffer if they cannot sell their produce to Mexico.

The concept of automation replacing most jobs is opinion. I think there will some of that but I don't see the apolcalypse others see. I don't like the wall either. I didn't argue that. Nothing stands in the way of farmers in your area selling to Mexico. It will probably become cheaper for them to do it. Trump loves exports just like everyone should.

That was a very good post from someone who probably disagrees with me on many issues

I wish there were more people like you on the left

I am neither a genius or an idiot.

But you are a fool if you think you are smarter than the people on my side of the isle
