House panel passes bill to repeal government ethics measure

South Dakota lawmakers took the first step Monday to repeal an embattled government ethics overhaul approved by voters in November.

The House and Senate State Affairs committees held a joint hearing on the proposal, which the House panel voted to send to the chamber's floor. The bill would dismantle the initiative that created an ethics commission, public campaign funding and limitations on lobbyist gifts to lawmakers.

So.... The people of South Dakota passed an ethics bill that limited pac contributions to candidates, established a publicly funded system for running for office and restricted lobbying for anyone in office until after two years leaving the office.

So what was the first action of the legislature in South Dakota? They literally declared a state of emergency to rush a bill through negating the peoples' will. Not only that, this emergency bill being introduce to kill it, also negates the ability for this bill to be placed back on the ballot again for the people to vote on.

Clearly this is what politicians in America care about more than anything else.

"It didn't take very long for the judge to determine that this is likely unconstitutional," said Republican House Speaker Mark Mickelson, a bill supporter and plaintiff in the case.

Of course it didn't, since State Court judges are also elected.

Why would anyone expect the average judge to support a bill that limits their access to funding for election/re-election bids?

Campaign finance reform will always get lip service, but little actual action from elected officials.

This is especially true when it comes to limiting either special interest lobbying, or their own options to become such lobbyists when their political options die out.

President Trump will be facing this same stonewalling if he make any attempts at the Federal level.

Self-interest always trumps altruism...at least when we are talking about politicians.
