Protestors Dressed as Hooded Klansmen Crash Jeff Sessions’ Confirmation Hearing

So, according to you, Ronald Reagan was an idiot and Trump is a genius, yes, Republicans have changed a whole lot.

You mean Ronald Reagan who appointed Sessions to a federal judgeship? The American Bar Association deemed Sessions qualified for the position. Democrats back then hatched a plan to smear Republican nominees, just like they're doing now. Reagan THEN pulled the nomination, so Democrat are trying the same playbook, which I predict they'll use on all the nominees.

Strange that you believe his nominations are all Republicans. Will they stop any of his nominations, I doubt it, soon enough they will be under the gun to produce should be very interesting to watch.

You are misreading my post. I was talking about the Reagan nominations. And somehow you've decided that Democrats can perform (which they can't) and Republicans can't perform. That's a very silly and biased notion for a supposed Independent.

Your country's history. Don't you know it?

Manc, don't you know? The first rule about slavery in American history is, you do not talk about slavery in American history. ;)

If Reagan's GOP found Sessions too offensively unsympathetic to civil right back then, what's changed?

What's changed is that one part of the ideological spectrum in this country has spent the last 7-20 years spreading a New Teaching: that any mention of racism or even the possibility that racists might still be alive is "playing the race card" or "being politically correct" and should be automatically ignored. (Unless, of course, the topic is whether or not the first black President is "racist against white people" - then, talk of racism is cool).

I am talking about nominations across the board, few are ever stopped, cabinet posts yes, every President has had some get kicked back. Never said either can perform, but I did vote Republican in the election, I think both are obstructionists and big spenders, cannot tell one from the other these days. The sooner We the People have better alternatives than Dems and Repubs the better for the Nation.

Unhinged liberals playing the only card they have or know how to play.

A perfect example of what I just said.

Whether or not intentional, it forms a great shield for actual racists. Now they can behave in as ugly manner as they want, and if anyone speaks up, a sizeable chunk of conservatives will rush to their defense with knee-jerk cries of "race card!", etc.

There's not enough will amongst the voters for that. You'd have to have the this past election on steroid with Dem voters also wanting change added on. That's not going to happen as long as there's a gravy train party like the Dems around.

wrong-Reagan was dealing with the possibility of a filibuster or outright blockage by the Democrats who borked Robert Bork. Now that Dirty harry deployed the nuclear option, the dems are SOL in stopping sessions and Trump knows that

D.C. is a circus that has lost control of the donkey and elephant show.

The place gets more and more infantile with each year.

People are complete dupes to partisan with either side.

They need to institute a dress code in the committee room.

Err.... I wasn't talking about the procedural mechanics of it. I was a little young to be paying attention to politics at the time Manc Skipper referred to, so I just ran on the assumption that what he said was true: that Reagan's GOP found Sessions views on civil rights too offensive for the 80s' GOP. (I recall something about Sessions lamenting that civil rights were being "rammed down" peoples' throats and that this was bad).

And I'm suggesting what changed on that front was that the backlash to "politically correct" culture (Tipper Gore et. al.) has gone overboard and for the last 10-20ish years, quite a large portion of the right seems to have adopted an approach to issues that involves ignoring and/or attacking any mention of potential racism, calling it "playing the race card" and the like.

I seriously doubt that it's simply down to the fact that segregation was still legal a couple of decades before Reagan's time, and here we are in 2017. There's still plenty of racism. There's also a new concerted effort to stop any discussion of it. (I grant that stupid college kids and their "safe spaces" do not exactly advance the anti-racist cause).

I see it all the time here, I saw it all the time on the last debate forum I was on, and I see it in comments to articles anywhere that still allows comments.

And the GOP didn't?

Trump's victory isn't much of a GOP victory. None of them were happy that he got the nomination and quite a lot of them remain unhappy.

He was rejected as a judge in 1988. The Republican led committee voted 10-8 against, due to his racist comments.

Maybe you should stop calling everyone racists. You overplayed your hand. Flyover country got tired of you playing the race card. It's coming back to bite you now, so strap yourself in.

You take one line of the 3 lines that I entered, and try to make a argument that i favor the GOP? Classic you!

Both parties suck, and are full of incompetent individuals.

The guy that torpedoed Session's judge confirmation was in 1986 not 1988. He was an assistant U.S. atty by the name of Thomas Figures.

Turns out Mr. Figures wasn't wrapped too tight. According to some sworn statements by his former colleagues, guess he thought Dan Rather was communicating with him through his TV.

And later after Mr. Figures, a Democrat, trashed Mr. Sessions at his hearing, he was later indicted by federal authorities for attempting to bribe a witness.
