...'a report by Harvard and Princeton economists Lawrence Katz and Alan Krueger, confirms exactly what we warned. In their study, the duo show that from 2005 to 2015, the proportion of Americans workers engaged in what they refer to as “alternative work” soared during the Obama era, from 10.7% in 2005 to 15.8% in 2015. Alternative, or "gig" work is defined as "temporary help agency workers, on-call workers, contract company workers, independent contractors or freelancers", and is generally unsteady, without a fixed paycheck and with virtually no benefits.

The two economists also found that each of the common types of alternative work increased from 2005 to 2015—with the largest changes in the number of independent contractors and workers provided by contract firms, such as janitors that work full-time at a particular office, but are paid by a janitorial services firm.

Krueger, who until 2013 was also the top White House economist serving as chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers under Obama, was "surprised" by the finding.

Quoted by quartz, he said “We find that 94% of net job growth in the past decade was in the alternative work category,” said Krueger. “And over 60% was due to the [the rise] of independent contractors, freelancers and contract company workers.” In other words, nearly all of the 10 million jobs created between 2005 and 2015 were not traditional nine-to-five employment.'

I don't know why this would be a surprise. The Obama administration would have cherry picked this data for election/political reasons. Make the books look good, don't ya' know? Medical, retirement, dental, etc. all cost money and the Elite Corporatocracy rules the roost. Let the banks and mortgage markets crash and although there will be some stressful times, all costs will go down, including labor and we can get competitive in World Markets again. Eliminate the Federal Reserve. Prosecute Market manipulators and make market manipulation by the Federal Gov't illegal. There is nothing in LOCAL infrastructure to cause development of work. New cheap renewable energy homes and profitable small farms would be a good place to start. Hard work creates successful farms when regulations are eliminated. In this Nation there are no rewards for hard work, except phusical disabilities and low wages. That's thoughts.

Thoughts?

It'd be one thing if you could live on, raise a family on, this part time / temporary work, but that's really not the case.

Once again, Democrats ignored the warnings about the impact that their policies would have, thinking that they knew best for the nation, much to the nation's detriment.

If it wasn't such an often repeated experience, it might be excusable, but it just seems that nearly every policy from the Democrats seems to end up with this result.

Mr. Krueger isn't doing his own reputation any favors by admitting he was surprised by the findings. I mean, this phenomenon has been noticed for a long time.

Reminds me of a Uber Commercial thats been airing quite a bit

A black Uber drivr explains that tese days everyone needs a " side hustle "...

Lol...you dont say ? Yea, because part time jobs are the norm

And so is having to hold down multiple prt time jobs. Its been legitimized when in fact its a glaring indicator of just how ba the Obama adminstration jacked up the American economy.

That show " tiny houses " is a another one. Theyre justifying people moving into Houses that are the size of a lare walk in closet.

Its absurd and ridiculous. No, NEVER criticize the messiah an accept the unintended consequenes of Libralism as the new norm

My thoughts?

I'm thinking that it's nice to have a study that confirms my personal observations and what I have been arguing about all along.

How much impact it will actually have on the employment debate remains to be seen.

No the whining over a living wage is coming exclusivly from the Left.

A economy thats had to be propped up with 8 years of Fed zero interest rate policies is reason enough to whine

Errr...they are whining about low wages jobs being the only thing growing, not the wages for those jobs themselves vs high paying jobs for actual skilled jobs and careers. In other words, they aren't whining about low paying McDs jobs but the lack of jobs in things like manufacturing, construction, trades, ect.

why should those jobs be any more highly paid if employers can get away with paying them as little as possible as well??

trump will fix it and make us great again. and drain the swamp

Huh? Those jobs have been either offshored to cheap labor and low regulation companies or the labor pool flooded from the H1B1 visa program. I'm confused what point you're trying to make here.

Thoughts?

I know some folks that own small businesses that used to employ people full time. After Obamacare they are only hiring part time people because they can't afford to pay for the health insurance. I live in an area that doesn't have any large businesses. Anyone that isn't a teleworker, business owner, work for a family business or retired has two or three part time jobs. Those people were better off before Obamacare.

As the OP's article implies, it's recovering in a way that is not very helpful...thanks to Obama and the Democrats.

Welcome to the new world order.

The problem of the 21st century will be one of employment. Precisely - in an ever increasing environment where machines and technology takes over a larger part of the tasks that could be performed by human workers, how do we find gainful employment for millions of people who are now simply irrelevant to the entire process?

Solve that problem and you win all sorts of prizes.

I think that is a wishful thinking kind of generalization that is not really true, however, in the last 8 years that democratic administration did a very poor job of fixing anything related to the economy...as the economists in that article have illustrated.

If in reference to the mortgage bubble popping, that had a far longer time developing than just Republican administrations. Arguably that it started around the Clinton administration.

We aren't quite in that dire situation, yet. Since we don't have the ability to dump a load of raw materials into a hopper and watch a quality product emerge from the other end yet, there will be jobs for people for quite some time to come.

No, the problem of the 21st century is finding a way to keep those jobs in the US.

Uh-oh...now you've gone and done it. You've implied that the Democrats are responsible for the mortgage bubble.

Even though you are correct, our leftist members will never accept that and now they are going to trot out all of their blather about how "it's all Bush's fault".

There goes the thread.

You are making a stupid argument. The Affordable (HAH!) Care Act incentivized businesses to employ people part time rather than full time. There were repeated warnings that this would lead to increases in part time jobs and decreases in full time jobs. Unintended consequences and all that. There is a reason why companies began employing people for 32 hours and under after the ACA passed and it wasn't because they discovered they could, they discovered they couldn't afford paying benefits. If you want to engage in a factual conversation about the topic matter, start when ready.
