Donald Trump risks opening up a major diplomatic dispute with China before he has even been inaugurated after speaking on the phone on Friday with Tsai Ing-wen, the president of Taiwan.

The telephone call, confirmed by four people, is believed to be the first between a US president or president-elect and a leader of Taiwan since diplomatic relations between the two were cut in 1979.

Although it is not clear if the Trump transition team intended the conversation to signal a broader change in US policy towards Taiwan, the call is likely to infuriate Beijing which regards the island as a renegade province.

The US has adopted the so-called “One China” policy since 1972 after the Nixon-Mao meetings and in 1978 President Jimmy Carter formally recognised Beijing as the sole government of China, with the US embassy closing in Taipei the year after.

The Trump team did not initially respond to multiple requests for comment, but after the FT first published news of the call confirmed that the president-elect had spoken with Ms Tsai and “noted the close economic, political, and security ties” between Taiwan and the United States.

“The Chinese leadership will see this as a highly provocative action, of historic proportions,” said Evan Medeiros, former Asia director at the White House national security council.

Not sure of the ramifications of this. Maybe it's part of Trump's individual trade deal plan. I don't know.

Too bad if mainland China/communist China does not like it, we are allies with the Taiwanese. Signalling there is a NEW sheriff in town, not the weak old one.

Good subtle signal showing the Chinese that he means business on those trade deals and currency manipulations, that he was not just talking trash to get elected.

Let's see... China has unilaterally attempted to grab most of the South China Sea, and we're the one's making trouble with a phone call. Have I got that right?

I gotta :lamo on that one.

I think we should sell them a couple dozen diesel submarines for "training". What's China going to do, take the rest of the ocean? Stop selling us rubber dog ****?

Not even in office yet and didn't even inform the current president? So reckless it's outrageous.

It will piss of China to no end.

That's not a good thing, considering how much trade we do with China and how critical good relations with them are.

This might be the first match thrown so Trump can burn it all down. He's a Rebel without a Clue.

Maybe someone should explain to him that China holds a massive amount of US debt, and can destabilize our economy tomorrow if they choose.

If this was intentional I can sort of respect it. But I suspect it was done out of ignorance.

Actually, they can't, not without hurting themselves more than us.

The rightists would have supported all of this Presidential action by Obama during his transition .

And will be defended by his alt-rider magas who've been bashing Obama since he was first elected .

Trolling a nuclear power might get us all in a lot if trouble. I'm sure it will be yuuuuge.

It's just crazy. It's the first time I've actually felt anger over America's descion. I tried to keep an open mind etc plus it's not my country etc. But it's very clear now Americas poor choice will have an impact worldwide and this man could potentially change the political landscape worldwide. He's so unpredictable, so brash and if he can do this before even sworn in God knows what he will do with the arm of the military behind him.

GOPs would bitterly complain that we have only one POTUS at a time.

Really? Massive trade deficit taking all of our jobs and you call that good relations? Yeah we have good relations with them because we are currently letting them rape us..

Maybe someone should explain to him that China holds a massive amount of US debt, and can destabilize our economy tomorrow if they choose.

Or if we choose we can print all the money we want and build huge infrastructure, then print a ton more money and buy everything we can while the $$ is still worth something until it is not, and once we've printed the $ to the value of toiletpaper we can pay china off with it..

So pretty much we could force china to accept a few cargo containers full of toiletpaper and they would be screwed..

In the kind of security structure that has been developing for a number of years now, it will become commonplace that situations will come about everywhere and again. There will be lots of deals and standoffs and new deals. Just like before the last Great War. Just like before the second one. Mark me, this is interesting right now. But it is only one of many complex confrontations to come.

From Bloomberg:

"China, Grappling With Trump, Turns to ‘Old Friend’ Kissinger"

The 93-year-old former secretary of state, who secretly brokered President Richard Nixon’s watershed visit in 1972, returned to Beijing to meet with state leaders Friday, just two weeks after huddling with Trump in New York. While little about Kissinger’s closed-door talks has been disclosed, Chinese officials are trying to assess whether the incoming administration will prompt greater confrontation over trade and territory disputes, as Trump promised on the campaign trail. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/arti...ling-with-trump-turns-to-old-friend-kissinger

Don't worry, China can't build much of anything that will last for more than a use or two at best these days.

Their equiptment is junk and military command is a joke of communist bureaucracy..
You think out army navy marines airforce situation is bad? Go have a gander at what that is like in china..
