Top baby names 2016 reveals unusual new trends and a surprise for David and Victoria Beckham - Mirror Online

Buried subtly in this story was a surprising fact to me. Muhammed is now the second most common boys name given in the U.K.?

Wow, already?

That's going to be a very different country in a few decades, especially if this is the only rapidly growing minority segment there.

Mohammed is actually 1st due to spelling variations, it was also 1st last year.

The real question is how a religion that is only 5% of the population makes up the #1 baby name

There are some great Arabic names out there for boys, Muhammed/Mohammed isn't one of them.

Lol why?

You do know that there are an infinite amount of potential names to choose from, so this doesn't mean much.

Because statistics and homogeneity in arabic names.

7000 Muhammads were born last year.
Whilst there are 6000 Jacks, 6000 Olivers, 6000 Harrys, 6000 Sams etc etc etc. That's a lot more traditional English names than traditionally Arabic names.

So this isn't the crazy demographic shift you're making it out to be.

No it is not. It takes almost a dozen different spelling ways of Mohammed and puts it in one, but does not do that for other names.. why?

Wow, that's even more surprising.

That's an amazing procreation rate for such a small segment. Either that, or the English have all tied their tubes and made the abortion clinic a monthly visit.

No it's not. See post above yours. It just means that English people are using a wider variety of names.

Breaking News! New trend in baby names in the U.K!

I hardly see why it is a breaking news

There arent really any alternate spellings for the other top names Oliver, Jack, Harry, George

There are about 1.6 billion Muslims in the world. About 150 million people in the world named Muhammad.

So about 150 million out of 800 million Muslim men are named Muhammad. About 19%.

I'm guessing that is why. :)

thats interesting. i thought they were required by law to name children by past kings and queens?

It's incredible the crazy conclusions people can jump to given a bait headline if they don't actually stop and think about the implications of the story for more than a few seconds. This isn't fake news, but that doesn't mean it isn't driving misinformation.

I lived in Spitalfields before it was posh. It was mostly first, second and third generation immigrants then. The only unpleasant things about it were the down market English living there. The Asians were fine. Good food too.

err yes there are.. and they are in fact on the list.

Harry and Henry .. same name, different spelling.

Jack and Jacob.. same deal.

Yes thats how they started out but they are distinctly different names now

Jack and Jacob.. same deal.

Jack is actually the same as John, but it is also short for Jacob, Jackson, James or Jason

Not because of this. Muslims overwhelmingly name their children Muhammad. There is no name even close to similarly popular for Western people in general. Especially now that people are making up new names and spellings like Aiden, Jayden, and Jaxon.

So is Muhammed and Mohammed or what ever spelling there is.

Jack is actually the same as John, but it is also short for Jacob, Jackson, James or Jason

Should all be added up to one for the list to be remotely fair.

A lot of Muslims name their boys Mohammad (or Mohammud... or Mohammed... or Muhammad.. or...) but that doesn't mean that Islamic births are approaching majority. Let me know when the top 10 names on the list are of Islamic origin.

Don't bring your filthy math into this.

Finally someone in my family is top of a baby name list, even if it's from the UK and it's my dog's name.
