Elon Musk's growing empire is fueled by $4.9 billion in government subsidies - LA Times

From Enron to Bernie Madoff, at the end of every great American financial scandal, the totality of the perpetrators’ greed seems to be matched only by the public’s incredulity at how such a thing could be allowed to happen.

And thanks to Elon Musk, there’s a good chance we may all be asking this question again soon.
The Senate Finance Committee and the House Ways and Means Committee have launched a probe into tax incentives paid to solar companies, according to The Wall Street Journal. The committee probes, led by their respective Republican chairmen, Rep. Kevin Brady of Texas and Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah, have found an appropriate and disturbing target to begin this work.
SolarCity, a solar installation company set to be purchased by Tesla Motors Inc., is one of the seven companies named in the initial investigation.
This must be the corporate welfare that some want to stop.

I hate the idea of subsidies, but for that man, he can have it all and more. I'd follow him to hell... or Mars.

He is doing so much good for our species, he might even save us from ourselves.

Elon Musk is not motivated by greed. He made his billions already, and chose to invest most of it in technologies he believes will help humanity.

While I may disagree with some of his ideas, he's not the sort to deliberately defraud the gov for the sake of profits.

While the subsidies may look funny, if they followed existing law, I can't see what the issue is.
I think we must address the weaknesses in the quiltwork of home solar generators, but the manufacturer subsidies,
may be encouraging competition with Chinese panels.

A 15% corporate tax rate with go a long ways to change that.

The Chinese government is investing massively in solar, they plan on making trillions.

We don't.

But "green" corporate welfare is good. ;)

The gent has been much-needed in NASA.

That's because they don't care about the environmental costs of solar power. The rare earths that solar demands are mined at an environmental cost that is staggering. Most Chinese mines for rare earths would be considered massive environmental disasters if they were in the US. So you keep on supporting the global damage, as long as you don't have it in your backyard, everything is peachy-keen. So fire up that solar powered Veg-a-matic and drink your wheat grass smoothie while China continues to poison the Earth so you can sip your smoothie with the self-assured smugness of someone who just supported the destruction of a big piece of this Earth.

Well, if he wants the right to spend tax payers money, he can become a federal employee.

There is going to be some sort of damage no matter which way you jump.

This way, we get to reduce carbon emissions.

The way to get through any complicated mess is to make a plan and carry it out.

Which none of you want to have anything to do with...

Oil subsidies, on the other hand, untouchable!

SO we have a questionable source of pollution that our ecosystem can handle vs. unquestionable damage that our ecosystem has no possible way of handling it and you simply can't accept that your pet project is not a good idea...

What about tax breaks for religious charities

while you make a point, you and i both get tax breaks when we fill out out tax form for April 15th

if you take away those tax breaks from the church, then they have the right to preach against government and the people in it.

So seriously I cant figure this out....is Musk's biggest gift technical thinking, or is it rather tapping very large straws into the public money reservoir?

I am accepting arguments at this time.

I think he's good at both of those things.

Manufacturing photo voltaic cells is not environmentally friendly. Our EPA regulations will never allow us to compete with the Chinese.

So, you're saying, "Solar is dirty." OK, but that doesn't tell us anything at all about the options unless we can compare the environmental costs, from end to end, in the long term, of solar versus, say, coal, or shale oil, or fracked natural gas.

The only source of pollution for fossil fuels (or nuclear for that matter) aren't just carbon, and lots of that other pollution simply isn't "questionable." I could post some photos of shale oil pits if you like. And what is the "unquestionable damage" from mining rare earth metals that doesn't apply to mining pretty much anything?
