Police said that Clark and the children’s fatherm Andre Price Jr., were having an argument about his alleged infidelity when she started texting things like, "Ya kids ain’t safe here I don’t want them here... So you better pray for your kids” and, “I’m killing them,” with a laughing emoji.
There is something wrong with a justice system that awards custody to a parent who is prepared to kill their children over infidelity. On this site are other headlines from the past month; Father Allegedly Stabs 2-Year-Old Daughter to Death, Man With History of Violence Kills Himself After Fatally Shooting Daughters, 4 and 5, Mom Who Smothered Baby While in Drug-Induced Sleep Pleads Guilty, etc. Basically, the worst cases of child neglect and abuse are becoming more and more common. Why?
Unlike other forms of filicide which may come from a problem between the parent and child, such as neglect or abuse, this problem existed between the two parents. There is no good reason to take out the anger you feel toward another parent on their child, and yet parents know that this is the most cruel thing that can be done to a parent. Neither the child nor the absent father could have seen this coming or prevented it, even if it was the case that he really had been cheating. As a society we are so backwards when it comes to sexuality, and male sexuality in particular. This story is heartbreaking because of the suffering and death of a child. But how could this situation have been avoided? We should stop treating fathers like property. Women should not exert control over men by killing their children in order to punish them. In a culture in which abuse of men is either acceptable, unreported, or both, this is a symptom of something far worse than mental dysfunction in one person.Superintendent of the Allegheny County Police Department, Coleman McDonough, said Clark confessed to killing the baby during an interview with police.
“She admitted to smothering her son in an air mattress,” McDonough said. “At one point she lifted the child’s lifeless body [on video]... and texted that video to the child’s father.
Police said additional texts also revealed that she unsuccessfully attempted to smother her 2-year-old daughter.
Should the mentally unstable be given custody of their own children? Absolutely, and parenthood is something that shouldn't be taken lightly. Our country used to sterilize people just because they were mentally retarded. Of course, I am referring to the compulsory sterilization which was found Constitutional in Buck v. Bell. Now we know that decision was not true. It's not a stretch to believe that custody should come with reproductive autonomy, even if it is a just a privilege conditional on due process of law. It's not uncommon for this to be the case for men. I am all for people who want to become parents becoming parents via the Department of Justice granting them that autonomy.
So, the solution is not to stop unstable parents from having custody. The solution is to teach parents to not abuse other parents, especially parents of their children. This is the worst case scenario of that type, when a child's life is put on the line.
