Trump calls for congressional term limits - POLITICO

Donald Trump on Tuesday said he would push for congressional term limits if he’s elected president — an expansion of his new campaign pledge to “drain the swamp” in Washington that comes as he propagates the conspiracy theory that the election will be rigged against him.
“If I'm elected president, I will push for a constitutional amendment to impose term limits on all members of Congress,” Trump said at a Tuesday afternoon rally in Colorado. “They've been talking about that for years. Decades of failure in Washington and decades of special interest dealing must and will come to an end.” Trump did not specify how long those limits should be.

While I'm not voting for Trump, I could support this position easily.

We have term limits. They're called elections.

Boy Trump is just coming up with all kinds of ideas now that he thinks he needs an agenda.

Six months late by my estimation.

TRUMP, not fast but he makes it.

Eventually.

Unintended consequences. Term limits shift power to unelected bureaucrats.

Uhhhhhh... the Supreme Court is unelected. Elected =/= automatically good. Some of these people have sat in Congress so long they have become disconnected from reality.

What? How?

Term limits limits the amount of political experience a congress or senate might have if the congress has to keep recruiting new people every two to four years.

The only ones who would benefit from this arrangement are lobbyists that would dominate the wheelings and dealings of political power. And I for one don't want to hand lobbyists any more advantages

In other words, "Oh, we've always done it this way!" Pfffffffffffffffttttttttttttt........ these people are disconnected from reality and we need a reboot. This wound is festering and infected.

And some of them are so new they don't have a clue what's going on.

And what about the politicans who are denied from political office because they reached a time limit? Why deny them a chance to dedicate their life to serving their constituents?

Actually, term limits for those in Congress is not a bad idea at all.

That said, Trump is not some original inspired crusader on this topic. Many have talked about this, and so have we right here in these forums.

My problem with term limits is it would periodically get rid of a congress critter who is actually doing a good job.

It always amazes me how anyone with a brain cell in their head can utter that crap seeing how congress has a 10-15% approval rating while a 85-90% incumbency reelection rate.If most voters were politically knowledgeable then elections would be term limits.

Yes! Exactly! Genius! Unlimited terms and unlimited government power! Great Idea!

If only people were as dedicated to politics as as they are about football or baseball

Right. Unlimited terms makes senators literal gods.

Term Limits? Well, let's give the neanderthal more "new-not" ideas like that to keep him occupied for the next couple of weeks.:)

I would've never taken you as a person to agree with unbridled obstructionism and raking in six-figures riding by the coattails of the hardworking and toiling American "citizenry"...

Not a good idea. For one, I don't like artificially limiting the choice of who to vote for. If people want to elect someone to their 30th term, who are we to say they can't. But more importantly, it's not like it will do any good. People will still elect the exact same type of people they elected before.

But they're not, and they're not gonna start.

So, do we, A., operate on the basis of current reality, or B., operate on the basis of what we want reality to be?
