Trump Calls for Congressional Term Limits

We have term limits already.

Elections.

so we should remove term limits from presidents? Would you be alright with 3rd term of Nixon, Bush, Reagan, or possibly Trump?

I would've never taken you as a person to agree with unbridled obstructionism and raking in six-figures riding by the coattails of the hardworking and toiling American "citizenry"...

Youre changing the subject, or you don't realize that term limits don't solve this problem. Which is it?

Not a good idea. For one, I don't like artificially limiting the choice of who to vote for. If people want to elect someone to their 30th term, who are we to say they can't. But more importantly, it's not like it will do any good. People will still elect the exact same type of people they elected before.

This.---------^

But I actually do think what they need is longer terms (Congresspeople). Maybe 4 years. It irks me that within 5 minutes of being sworn in they're already focused on their upcoming re-election. They spend more time campaigning and not enough time legislating.

There is a study...can't remember were, that delves into the relationship between general level of corruption, and time spent in office.

Yeah, there will be a few folks lost who do a good job. We'll call them....the 1%. Do we tailor our process to benefit the 1%, or do we tailor our process to provide protection from the othe 99%? To put this another way, does the good brought on by keeping the good 1% in office longer outweighs the bad inflicted by keeping the other 99% around indefinitely?

The problem is that only one third of the senate is up for election every six years. That is why there are midterm elections

I would even say 6 years, but after those 6 years, game over.

Game over, as in what....go home? No, can't agree with that. One of the longest serving Congressional reps is my old rep from NJ, Rodney Frelinguysen. He's been there forever, and does a damn good job still.

Not that I disagree, but what a cynical view.

See my post 32.

We have term limits. They're called elections.

But they're so inconvenient! Sometimes the wrong people get re-elected!:lamo

It does, but unless both are addressed at the same time, one cannot proceed.

I disagree.

When fixing something, you can't just....voila, fix 100% of it at once. You find a spot to start....and start.

Take the car in my avatar. Took me 5 years to get it up to snuff to safely drive, and another 6 to get to the point that it genuinely operates well. Had I taken your view on it, I never would have begun the project. But a buddy once told me..."How do you eat an elephant, Kev?" "One pound at a time."

Is it bad thing to have congressmen with actual congressional experience?

Is it a good thing that government is a career, with people going into it having never worked a private job in their entire lives?

Is it a bad thing to severely limit the return on investment for lobbyists and special interests that always manage to find a way to unload unlimited amounts of cash onto candidates, both dems and reps?

Pubic and civil service is a job. I don't understand why public sector work is looked down upon.

What? How?

You need the experience of the long term office holders. The problem is "the good 'ol boy's club" we have now, does not adequately discipline it's members. There are layers and layers of laws and rules, but no one enforces them.

Plus, you would need a constitution amendment. Trump should stick to what he can do, like get the economy rolling, and tax reform, and fix Obamacare before my kids move back in with me!
