New Concerns Arise About Mental Health Of College Students

...Since when is life a psychiatric disorder? Going through a break-up is a psychiatric disorder? Really?

We already have a big enough problem with real psychiatric disorders. We don't need to invent more.

LOL actually I think this is a direct cause,

1) Our society is a huge contributor to psychiatric disorders
2) Media in all aspects play another role.

1) Our dirty laundry is much easier to air with the ability of advanced communications. In my Generation it was "pagers" but you could only send so much info at one time. Now days with "Smart Phones", Online communities (Facebook, Twitter etc) The ability to shame someone is much easier an more public than ever. Sadly, the media enhances this by perpetuating the socialites that do this at the upper levels making it seem like its ok. Our generation has now become a Debbie Downer, and dragging people down is the "cool" thing to do.

2) The current generation does not have the same upbringing as it was years ago. The family life is not so family life any more, its Baby sitters, come home have a quick meal in front of the TV/Smart Phone/ Tablet and then off to the bed room for the remainder of the night. There is no download or comforting of a rough day with the family members. Kids are speaking online to other kids that are having issues and its just a vicious cycle of negativity.

3) Expectations have exceeded the outcome..... If you dont go to college you will fail, if you dont do well in college you will fail, When you get out of college, YOU AUTOMATICALLY FAIL. You are in debt, the potential job market it competitive, the promises income is no where near the expectations. Students are taught that because they have X education they are entitled..... Its terrible. The current generation wants to get the most money out of the least amount of work. When you look on TV, you see these young people making millions for doing a trend....that hit it big, every student from there on is hoping to catch the next wave....but realistically, its like the lottery.........

4) People are just @$$holes.....Relationships have no commitment anymore.... divorces, cheating, a number count of triumphs is the norm.... Not looked at as a negative. People think meh I can just dump them and get someone better, over and over and over...... How many Girls/Guys can I bang this week.... its terrible...... When they look in the mirror and realize how disgusting they have become.... guess what...... Gateway to an alternate reality.... alcohol.....cigarettes......and then...... Drugs... Downward spiral out of control and then.... a broke college student that needs 1 more hit........ a life of crime.....

All of the above, because our society, perpetuates negativity and proper family life is neglected due to the needs to survive.....

Our college kids now have it bad? Sure they do. Is it any worse than before, No not really the only difference now is that things have become instant and the Damage can also become immediate.... Before it was spit wads and paper fights.... Now its a shamed facebook picture on the Net that you will never get off.......EVER.........

Seriously, it's called LIFE. We do love to diagnose and treat. Being depressed for a few weeks to a month because you just broke off a relationship isn't a psychiatric disorder.

I so agree. Happiness isn't a destination, its stops along the way in a journey filled with plenty of ups and downs.

I can't get my head around this. Is this a new phenomena or did we just not know it and grew through it?

academic problems
lol - Well if they're including THAT then 100% of college students have issues.

I think this actually takes things my son struggles with (real, genuine mental health issues out of his control like debilitating anxiety that makes him physically sick, and impulse control to where he must be on medication or he cannot function properly day-to-day) and trashes it, making a mockery of people who have genuine problems.

Your boyfriend broke up with you? Gimme a break.

This one's easy. I've been saying it for years..............

Yeah, but no matter how many times you say it, it still won't make it right ...

;)

Oh Jeez.

So at least 50-60% of teenagers/early twentiers have psychological problems.

WELL DUH!!!

So do pre teens and thirtysomethinger's and fortysomethingers and...

If that's true, since you are mentally ill, you must be a liberal.

Nice comeback and all, but that's like saying someone who is mentally ill must have dementia, because ALL mental illnesses are apparently dementia. Just gonna lump all mental illnesses together as a single mental disorder, eh? Some psychologist you are. :2razz:

That pretty much applies to the vast majority living in modern culture, but it remains relative of course. If legitimate, the significance of this report is the wide scope of the phenomenon among college students in the U.S, and I'm inclined to believe it.

Some of the outright dismissal in this thread IMO is disturbing.

This isn't about safe spaces, or trigger warnings, both of which drive me nuts, this is about potential mental health issues. You can't just blanket dismiss ALL of the claims, as that IMO opens up its own shares of problems.

I speak from my own experiences, from my first years in college, and having my own depression and problems (stemming from an extremely abusive roomate situation ~_~ ) disregarded, dismissed essentially, which created problems later on.

One can dismiss the scope, or degree of severity, one can even wonder if there is veracity so far as the supposed causes, or even if the connection being made is accurate... but I don't think you can easily dismiss this like you could easily dismiss some of the SJW lunacy infesting college campuses.

Why am I not surprised that we are frequently hearing how crazy we are from psychiatrists and psychologists? Could they possibly be promoting their own self interest?

I would not be surprised to hear that a normal, healthy, well-adjusted American male is diagnosed as depressed or paranoid by liberal psychiatrists/psychologists when attending a liberal university. "Do you think people here are out to get you?" "Hell, yes." "Do you think people here hate you?" "Hell, yes." "Are you afraid to go on a date?" "Hell, yes." "Do you think professors grade you based on your political views?" "Hell, yes."

How many students are food insecure and/or homeless?

According to Feeding America’s 2014 Hunger in America report, roughly 10% of its 46.5 million adult clients are college students. This amounts to two million full-time college students. Of those surveyed by the emergency food services network, roughly 30.5% of students reported that they were forced to choose between food and educational expenses at some point over the last year.

Depending on the demographic makeup of a given college campus, however, these numbers are even more alarming.

An internally-conducted survey across the University of California’s nine campuses—home to some 150,000 undergrads—found that a full 25% of students had skipped meals “somewhat often” or “very often” to save money (or due to a lack thereof) in 2014.

Among 274,000 undergrads affiliated with the City University of New York, no fewer than 40% reported having experienced food insecurity during the prior year.

An outright site ban is probably more apropos.

I've come to a theory that the political world is not flat. It's possible to go so far to the right that you end up on the left and vise versa with insanity and sanity as the north and south poles.

No wonder they need safe zones.
I think it's a combination of drugs, a sense of self-importance, and peer reinforcement creating a bubble for college students.

We were more mentally tough.
Most of us were taught to handle disappointment.

We learned to press on and continue to try harder.

These new kids were never taught that. So it makes sense that they can't handle it.

If anything, you are less tough and less smart than these new kids. But keep on pretending and reliving those glory days, who knows, maybe it's all you've got left.

The problems are not new, the inability of young people to deal with problems is. Yes, there were young people back in the day that were just as ill-equipped but now it seems to be the norm and not the exception.

Because they don't see themselves with much of a future no matter what they do. Job market for new grads blows

Or divorce rate is so high many grew up with single parent in poverty...take your pick
