Rare albino deer bagged by 11-year-old [W:245]

Are your buddies all in a 'dick measuring contest' when they go fishing? Hell...I usually fish alone because I love the quiet and the surroundings (and I love fresh rainbow trout).

I get people not seeing the personal appeal to hunting. I stopped rifle hunting a few decades ago. But deer camp was great times. Some of the best weeks spent with friends up in the mountains. If all you saw was a dick measuring contest, then maybe it was your friends, in which case...I highly doubt that activity among them ended after hunting trips.

Ehh...like I said...I really don't have a dog in the fight. I don't want hunting to be banned, I'm sharing my perception of hunting. I love nature and I love being alone in it...but don't really see the appeal of hunting.

I cede to your expertise on fish penis...

;-)

I'm the undefeated champion of the lake by my house. My friends ask "why do you only fish alone" and all I can think of them is 'what a bunch of losers'.

"“He should have let it live. There are plenty of others out there,” reads one of hundreds of comments.
“If it’s rare, why the hell would he kill it?” reads another.
“I’m fine with hunting, just hate the ‘Hey look, it’s different, let’s shoot it’ ideas. Shoot it with a camera and let the unique one live,” reads yet another.Deer-hunting in Michigan is an extremely popular pastime, so it’s not surprising that so many wrote in defense of Gavin Dingman.“Get over it. The law says it’s legal. Back off the kid!!! Way to go kiddo!!” reads one comment.
“He paid good money for his license. He can use it for anything HE chooses, ” reads another. “Whether it be a brown deer or an albino buck, the state of Michigan gave him permission to kill it. Leave the kid alone. He did nothing wrong. He harvested a great trophy.”
Some of the commenters criticized WZZM 13 for posting the story on Facebook, opening Gavin to criticism.

"Some native cultures revere the white animals, and believe that they possess the spirits of ancestors."
Do you think this is in bad taste? Blame the kid? Blame the dad? No problem whatsoever?

Who cares? They don't survive often for a reason. White animals in the wild are easier to see and kill. The kid did the act Darwin probably skipped because humans killed off natural predators (or have been the natural predators of for thousands of years).

I wouldn't tell them that...they are my friends. I would just be like "hey...instead of hunting lets play football or baseball today".

Is a football game a dick measuring contest as well? I think the case could be made that it is.

I have a few fishing buddies i go out with. We have a 15 word maximum while on the lake. Camp is different but on the lake...shush...I'm fishing.

Sure...to an extent...everything is to an extent...but at least a football game includes semi-even competition between two parties. I don't think a deer has much of a chance when faced with someone in a deer stand, camouflaged with a high powered rifle.

Considering the fact that the deer was able to survive as long as it did means it didn't need to rely on its bad eyesight. I DO celebrate the kid bagging that deer. I don't believe it was easy to do.

The deer survived as long as it did because it was too young to be bagged, until this season.

It's surprising that it has lived as long as it did, given the obvious disadvantages it had.

I wonder what they're going to do with the hide? A deerskin with hair that could be dyed any color would be valuable to people who tie their own flies.

Deer ranges have been losing non-human alpha predators for years. It probably lived as long as it has because there are fewer wolves.

That's why it's more sporting to use a bow.

BTW, I took another look at that picture, and wondered: If the deer is a true albino, would its antlers still be brown? Just wondering.

I've already posted how the anti hunters can eliminate hunting of deer and still have a healthy herd.

And we still have plenty of mountain lions here in California. You're welcome to come get a few of them and release them in your part of the country.

They will reduce the deer population to manageable levels, guaranteed.

Of course, once there aren't enough deer for them, they aren't against supplementing their diets with the occasional dog or cat.

List of Mountain Lion Attacks

Doesn't happen often, but is you're a hiker, live in a mountain area, you need to be wary as it is. I'm not at all eager to spread these predators around.

That's not necessarily true. In Michigan, people have the means to take 6-point deer...or, even antlerless deer...and this one was a 12-point.

But even so, hunters aren't the only predators that go after deer in Michigan.

I went fishing at least one weekend a month (Biscayne Bay, Gulf Stream) from age ~6 - 13 with my father. He owned a boat we'd tow to the docks. He never mentioned the contest, which has me wondering... I guess I won.

I understand natural predators avoid prey with obvious genetic defects unless desperate.

Well, maybe you know more about that sort of thing than I do.

I would have to check Affirmative Action hunting laws in his state regarding shooting White as opposed to Brown or multi-colored deer.

If the minority albino-White deer are required to be in a certain percentage in each hunting district, then the offending youth may broken the law.

Keep in mind that this deer wouldn't have survived more than a couple of years. Being white in a brown environment makes you easier prey. So the kid got to kill the deer instead of a pack of coyotes...

I hope they dress out the animal and consume it. If it was killed for the sake of killing it and putting it's head on the wall of someones den, that's wrong.

This story brings to mind stories that my grandmother told me about hunting on their farm. Grandma and Grandpa had a couple hundred acres in the foothills north of Mt. St. Helens (pre-eruption) and they used to let people hunt on their property for a small fee. Lots of deer and elk and with my Grandfather's brilliant land management (he raised chickens and used to spread the manure on his fields, giving them much higher yields, allowing him to run more cattle and sheep per acre than anyone else), the deer and elk used to flock to his property. One year an albino doe showed up and Grandma made sure that every hunter that hunted their property was aware that she wasn't to be hunted. The hunters all honored her request and left her untouched. The thing was at that time, trophy hunting was pretty acceptable, but not to my grandparents. They'd tell the hunters that they had two choice when it came to the kill, take it home or drop it off at the ranch house where it would be canned and the meat given away to those who needed it.

The deer lived long enough already, getting bigger only would improve his chances... coyotes wouldn't take down a full grown male deer. The winter in Michigan could have actually made it an advantage.

Obviously albino isn't something they care about. Hence why you don't see albino gators in the wild. Or turkey. Or basically anything that lives in a predator filled environment. We would see more wild albinos if that were the case.

At least that is my understanding of natural selection.

Sure. But the genetics wouldn't serve the offspring well. Maybe in the winter, but not the rest of the year. At any rate...it was a good trophy for the kid and I'm sure it tasted fine.

Maybe our animal lovers think the kid needs to go to a re-education gulag for sensitivity training?

I've been reading lately about "rotational grazing" and they say it's even better if you have your chickens forage in pasture a few days after the cattle have grazed it. They eat the parasites in the manure (so the cows don't get them) and they scratch the manure into the ground.
