Former New York Times executive editor Jill Abramson said that Condoleezza Rice, who served as secretary of state and national security adviser under President George W. Bush, personally asked for special press treatment — specifically, for the newspaper to kill a story.

Ms. Rice reportedly made the request while national security adviser, regarding a story from journalist James Risen on the CIA, Ms. Abramson said.

Ms. Rice was somewhat awkward during the ordeal, requesting a personal visit, Ms. Abramson said.

“She had a legal yellow notebook on her lap with lots of notes on it, and once I had taken a seat across from her, she barely looked up,” she said during a “60 Minutes” interview. “She basically read in a very stern manner from her notes on this legal pad, which were just point after point about why this story would be damaging to the national security.

“I don’t think I uttered much more than ‘hello’ and ‘I will think of what you said,’” Ms. Abramson said.

Ms. Abramson said Ms. Rice was concerned, first and foremost, “that Jim ceases all reporting on this story, which was really an extraordinary request.”

The former executive said she regretted killing Mr. Risen’s story, which revealed the CIA’s inability to stop Iran’s nuclear program and ultimately put him in hot water with the Justice Department for refusing to disclose his source.

“It seemed, in the calculus of all of the major stories we were dealing with at that point, not worth it to me and I regret that decision now,” she said.

First - Rice hasn't been in the State Department in nearly 7 years.
Second - how is this breaking news as we don't know what the CIA story was, nor how it would harm national security.

I'm all for waxing nostalgic but I don't see the point of the article.

The point is - Bush, bad man - very bad man

the first paragraph pretty much sums it up

another black and white admitted instance where government prevented a story from being run through pressure. id say its pretty relevant...

It's interesting and shows how the Bush admin clicked or any other admin when they don't want a story publicized. Nothing wrong with looking into the past to glean something interesting.

Got a problem with the history of past admins?

I don't either.... its the Washington Times. The only point to their articles are typically, Conservative: Righteous / Democrats: Evil

"Rice runs for Presidency"! That would be the talk of the town!

I don't know how good she would be, but she has a great intellect and is an expert on foreign policy. She does lack experience on domestic issues, and has no executive experience.

This kind of thing happens often... don't see why Mrs. Rice gets special treatment.

This is Racist!!! This is only a big deal because Mrs. Rice is Black!!!!

...... man that feels good to say, no wonder people do it so often.

/sarcasm

Unless the material was sensitive and could affect an ongoing investigation or the lives of citizens, Government should not interfere with the press. I am shocked to see nonchalance about this story and fear that freedom is not an important issue for some. Amazing what partisanship does to commons sense and logic.

I have a special distaste for Condoleezza Rice. Her speeches are remarkable for its defensive, dense and evasive tone, replete with half-truths, outright falsehoods, distortions and subterfuges. It doesn't surprise me she sought to kill the CIA story. I'm glad she is no longer in power.

It doesn't happen to African Americans often, but Ms. Rice certainly has had her share of good fortune. She was a lousy National Security Advisor and I'm still waiting to see the results of her role as Secretary of State. Ms. Rice was Provost at Stanford before joining the GWB admin. She had been instrumental in teaching George Herbert Walker Bush about Russia since she had a Ph.D. in Russian Literature and spoke fluent Russian. The father recommended Condi to the son when he became president. GWB, lacking in coherent rhetoric, sorely needed coaching from someone like Rice and W became very dependent on her. This is why she was able to get all these choice positions in the GWB admin. Condi's role could have been given to a Chinese person, or any other ethnic but because of the senior Bush needing Condi to learn about Russia, she became a valuable asset to the Bush family.

Rice was acting as National Security Adviser. If she worked to kill the story in order to protect sensitive sources and methods of classified information, I don't think she can be blamed for what she did. From the general description of the article, it seems that the story might have exposed the CIA's limitations. In turn, that could have allowed Iran to exploit that vulnerability.

That is probably the case, Don, but I do find it telling that some in the same Administration had no issue exposing a spy who was on an important fact-finding mission on the very same topic.

Wouldn't NFL football fall under domestic ?

Rice was President Bush's (43) White House National Security Adviser during the first four years of the Bush administration. Doesn't that fall under executive ?

Then you have to look at the consequences if Rice were POTUS, it would give Vladimir Putin a migraine.

I am taking a Media Law class this semester and my professor used to work for CBS and she says government chilling news stories is way more common then people think.

And she sounds and looks like a buck toothed mouse. Wouldn't be taken seriously by many world leaders.

Macho Putin wouldn't take her seriously. He mocks female leaders. He once brought a dog with him to a meeting with Merkel knowing she has a fear of dogs.

Condoleezza Rice is considered one of the top experts on Russia and the former Soviet Union.

Putin knows exactly who Rice is. It was Rice who coached G.W. Bush on how to deal with Russia and Putin.

Putin holds Rice in awe. He fears her but highly respects her.

I'm sure it offends you a black woman doing her job for a white man and all. Personally I don't understand your bias and hatred. It's always been really sad to me when someone hates someone so much....I'm sure you are equally disgruntled with bitterness over the current regimes demanding controls over the stories leaving the briefing room? I'm sure your upset they promised CSPan the negotiations over obummers care and then didn't include them and all?
