Condoleezza Rice named as killer of New York Times’ story on CIA

And she sounds and looks like a buck toothed mouse. Wouldn't be taken seriously by many world leaders.

You're just throwing out insults without knowing anything.

That's a good point - No matter how many times she says she's happy at Stanford, the left is still terrified she might seek high office.

I hope they keep trotting her and having heart attacks over her.

another black and white admitted instance where government prevented a story from being run through pressure. id say its pretty relevant...

Yes, Abramson is white and Rice is black.

Attack on Dr. Rice's looks ftl. :3oops:

I am taking a Media Law class this semester and my professor used to work for CBS and she says government chilling news stories is way more common then people think.

Perhaps. There's probably a lot of information that I am sure the government would rather keep to themselves -- sensitive or not. But I doubt it typically goes as high as the Secretary of State -- especially making a personal trip.

Condoleezza Rice is considered one of the top experts on Russia and the former Soviet Union.

Putin knows exactly who Rice is. It was Rice who coached G.W. Bush on how to deal with Russia and Putin.

Putin holds Rice in awe. He fears her but highly respects her.

I am sure Rice is competent and knowledgable when it comes to Russia, but to say the racist, misogynistic and homophobic Putin is in awe is laughable at best.

Of course, the issue of sensitive information reaching the press is not a new one. For example, here's a joke about such matters from a Ford Administration meeting related to Lebanon's civil war that was held on March 23, 1976:

Secretary of State Kissinger: What was the classification?

Undersecretary of State Sisco: The highest—that means it will take at least 48 hours to reach the New York Times.

Frankly I think both of you should tone it down, because there is no way to know how much awe he feels.

I don't know how good she would be, but she has a great intellect and is an expert on foreign policy. She does lack experience on domestic issues, and has no executive experience.

It's a heck of a lot better than Obama's resume was.

WHAT?! Our beloved government hiding something from the citizens???!!! Why that is an outrage! Whoever heard of government cover ups?

These requests have occurred repeatedly over our history. Obama has raised the bar considetably demanding WH review of all prior ti publication.

Do you even know the definition of awe ?

It's something you fear but respect.

President Esienhower was held in awe by the Soviet Union when he was POTUS. They respected him as being a military commander who was CnC of Allied Forces during WW ll but feared him because his stance against communist expansion in the world.

the first paragraph pretty much sums it up

I still don't know what the point is - it's not like other administration haven't cited national security issues with a media outlet.

It's interesting and shows how the Bush admin clicked or any other admin when they don't want a story publicized. Nothing wrong with looking into the past to glean something interesting.

Got a problem with the history of past admins?

Not at all as long as there's a point. Is the point according to you, just a nice to know historical question? If so .... okay.

everything has become a national security issue.

W, Cheney, Rice, and Powell all gave the "nuclear smoking gun" speech. They have belittled themselves right before my eyes and ears.

If the story actually did endanger national security then the state was right to put pressure on them to kill it, hell if this was Russia or some other authoritarian state it wouldn't have been a request and Risen would probably be 6 feet under.

Yes, thank you for the correction. But still, my point stands... she was pretty high up to make a personal call.

Another question comes to mind... how did they know about the story? They weren't spying, were they? :2razz:

I don't know for sure about this particular incident. I do know from reading past memoirs that there have been cases where newspapers have informed the government as a courtesy that they were planning to run various national security-related stories.

Interesting. I don't know how I feel about that. The reporter in the OP regrets killing the story.
