I'm sure some liberals here will think this is a wonderful idea but I think liberals are taking this country right off the deep end with this kind of insanity.

A Nebraska school district has instructed its teachers to stop referring to students by “gendered expressions” such as “boys and girls,” and use “gender inclusive” ones such as “purple penguins” instead.

“Don’t use phrases such as ‘boys and girls,’ ‘you guys,’ ‘ladies and gentlemen,’ and similarly gendered expressions to get kids’ attention,” instructs a training document given to middle-school teachers at the Lincoln Public Schools.

“Create classroom names and then ask all of the ‘purple penguins’ to meet on the rug,” it advises.

I've only seen one besides this?

Re: School Told to Call Kids ‘Purple Penguins’ Because ‘Boys and Girls’ Is Not Inclus

There is something very, very wrong with liberals. This is just more evidence of that.

Re: School Told to Call Kids ‘Purple Penguins’ Because ‘Boys and Girls’ Is Not Inclus

Some of this is useful. Instructors that are more aware of the constructs of gender and how they act when leading a class are likely to have better rapport with their students. That being said, using "purple penguins" merely to avoid using the terms "boys and girls" doesn't get you anywhere special. Perhaps at best "purple penguins" can make children giggle, because it is "different" "weird" or "funny."

The older a student gets, I believed it was important to start introducing them to the concept of "Miss" or "Mr." as a formality. I would do it to bring a bit more of a serious tone to the classroom, where by extension, I would grant my students a level of respect in the expectation that they would do the same to me and each other in the course of classroom discussion.

While members of ISIS are training their kids to kill, we are emasculating our boys. SMH

Wouldn't that be a positive thing for us?

Ha, yeah. The solution in South Park was that everyone who's bothered by transgender people should be kept away from normal people, and given their own bathroom.

Re: School Told to Call Kids ‘Purple Penguins’ Because ‘Boys and Girls’ Is Not Inclus

You cant call them purple penguins because using the term purple is racist! And according to common core 6+6=13 because i feel like it does, didn't you know that...

Re: School Told to Call Kids ‘Purple Penguins’ Because ‘Boys and Girls’ Is Not Inclus

Yeah, I'm going to go with "not real."

This is Snopes bait.

Yeah I thought it was pretty much bs. I live in Omaha about 50 miles from Lincoln and I hadn't heard a word about it. If you listen to the radio interview with the superintendent that the article in the OP cites here: Episodes '10/1 LPS Superintendent Dr. Steve Joel' he provides a very clear intelligent understanding of this whole thing. Also, the material was provided only to one middle school.

Re: School Told to Call Kids ‘Purple Penguins’ Because ‘Boys and Girls’ Is Not Inclus

Yeah, if it were true, I'd completely disagree with it. I agree with being sensitive to gender issues and the reasons the school district is taking this on, middle school is a time when LGBT kids are likely to be bullied, but "Purple Penguins" is rather ridiculous.

However, the schools have not been instructed to, "stop referring to students by “gendered expressions” such as “boys and girls,” and use “gender inclusive” ones such as “purple penguins” instead."

That is untrue.
National Review cited paraphrased materials purportedly provided to educators that painted a picture of a full-scale ban on genders in the Lincoln school district:

According to Lincoln Public Schools:
The handouts, provided by a staff member on a district equity team, were meant only for teachers, not for students or parents, she said.

And they were not meant as rules staff had to follow, but as suggestions for how teachers can make students feel comfortable. It also stresses the impact words can have on others, Leggiardo said.

“If there’s a staff member that’s uninformed and unsupportive, that can be pretty scary for a family maybe struggling to understand transgender issues themselves,” she said.

A parent who is challenging this policy with the school board doesn't mention "Purple Penguins", but cites this passage in her email to parents.
"12 easy steps on the way to gender inclusiveness” that, among other things, advised avoiding “gendered” expressions such as “boys and girls.”

The handout suggests opting for more specific terms such as “calling all readers” or “hey, campers.”

I applaud the Superintendent's efforts to be more inclusive of LGBT kids. I'm on the fence at how effective changing out pronouns might be, but making staff more aware of the issue, in general, is a good thing. IMO

"Purple Penguins" is misleading, at least from what I found.

Re: School Told to Call Kids ‘Purple Penguins’ Because ‘Boys and Girls’ Is Not Inclus

No. Both men and women need backbone, emasculating people does nothing favorable for them. Women and men's success depends on how confident and aggressive they are. They must be able to question and challenge the status quo and to think beyond what exists currently. Confidence and aggression allows people to stand for themselves by themselves because they inevitably have tested themselves and see challenge as a further test to exceed their existing limits. Women and men these days in public schools are encouraged and cudgeled into being subservient and meek and to be part of a group without which they are almost helpless. Working with others is important but it should never be emphasized over being able to work and succeed on ones own. The ability to both is important. We can take a lesson from the lions on the African savannah, they hunt well as part of a pride, but they can hunt as well on their own. Their success as an alpha predator is due in large part because of this flexibility.

Crue gave us the comparison of training children to fight in a war and emasculation in American schools. If that was the choice, I would clearly support the latter. That is, unless, Crue is completely fine with being a terrorist apologist.

Not sure what is 'not true' about the article. They confirmed the foolishness about the purple penguins, saying only it was 'offered as a guideline', not 'ordered to be used'. In other words...its true that is the curriculum. Its true that is what teachers were being given to use as a guideline.

For one thing, the article quoted that the brochure was distributed to the all Lincoln public middle schools when in fact it was only distributed solely to the Irvington Middle School. It's misleading and not true the way it was written as it was not given to middle school teachers at Lincoln public schools it was teachers at one school.

No. Those incapable or unwilling of engaging in effective violence only survive when protected by those who do not share their inability.

Im seeing where the superintendent of the school district acknowledges it. I'm not seeing where it is given only to one school, but even if that were the case...so what? It doesnt change the utter foolishness of what those people are doing.

Greetings, Lutherf. :2wave:

Yep, every kid will now be able to proudly state to their grandkids one day that "I was a purple penguin." That's probably about the same time that an overdue visit to a doctor will be scheduled, since something unusual is happening to their grandparent!
