Janay Rice defends husband Ray Rice, rips media - Chicago Tribune

I woke up this morning feeling like I had a horrible nightmare, feeling like I'm mourning the death of my closest friend," Janay Rice wrote. "But to have to accept the fact that it's reality is a nightmare in itself. No one knows the pain that [the] media & unwanted options from the public has caused my family. To make us relive a moment in our lives that we regret every day is a horrible thing. To take something away from the man I love that he has worked his ass of for all his life just to gain ratings is horrific. THIS IS OUR LIFE! What don't you all get. If your intentions were to hurt us, embarrass us, make us feel alone, take all happiness away, you've succeeded on so many levels. Just know we will continue to grow & show the world what real love is! Ravensnation we love you!

I wonder if anyone in the news media and all those sanctimoneous busybodies who think of themselves as protectors of women talked with Janay about it before destroying her husband's career.

Naw. They wouldn't have cared.

A lot of abused women forgive their abusers regardless of how many times they are abused, especially if that abuse is rich,

Yeah, I thought so. Her opinion doesn't count.

Very few abusers stop without outside help. He's probably still abusing her and she is afraid to admit it or do anything about it.

It counts for her. The NFL makes their own rules and their own decisions. They are a private organization and if a business chooses not to employ someone, that's their right.

What she wants is moot. I don't want to watch a sport that glorifies scumbags.

Personally, I would not have a man working for me that beat his wife. Reason being, someone like that is on the level of a child molester in my book. If his wife was willing to put up with it, then fine, that's her choice, but that would not mean I would have to pay the son of a bitch.

The media didn't assault Janay Rice. Ray Rice did. He's responsible for his actions and the consequences of his actions.

I don't disagree with you here. But...

I do have to say that I do think the media has taken this too far. One merely has to note that she did indeed marry the man that assaulted her. According to a few news sources that I have read, they did go to counselling and have ironed out their problems. While we do not know if they're being truthful, we have to take them at their word. Hopefully Rice has repented, and will never ever lay a hand on another woman ever again. So I personally do believe he should get another chance. Heck if she can forgive him, why can everyone else?

why would her opinion count? the league and team is doing what is in their best interest, not hers.

As a kid I watched my mom get the **** beat out of her for years by her boyfriend at the time. The fact she went ahead and married him doesn't really mean much, many codependent women in abusive relationships do the same thing. I don't know if Ray Rice has hit his wife again or not. I do know though that every man I have ever known that hit women didn't quit until they were physically unable to do it anymore. If she wanted to go ahead and marry him then that's her business. However, if they will suspend you or throw you out of the NFL for smoking a joint, then they sure as hell ought to for beating a woman.

His wife never filed charges over the abuse. That ought to tell you something. Don't understand that one but I know it goes on. We could guess till the cows come home but that's all it would be. Low self esteem? or maybe she puts up with the **** for the finer things in life. The video of Rice knocking her out with a single punch on the elevator was leaked to TMZ. They are the ones that exposed the ordeal. Rice's last contract with the Ravens was in 2012 for 35 million dollars. From what I've been reading he will get to keep 25 million and will lose out on the last 10 million. These two are use to livin mighty high on the hog. If she is going to "stand by her man", guess both of them will have to scale back and go on a budget.

Yeah, we are going to excuse people who sucker punch women until they are unconscious because the woman he knocks about forgives the criminal .

Sorry, but for people like that there is only one place, jail.

I feel bad for her, really bad. That probably wasn't the first time he hit her and it probably wasn't the last. A lot of abuse victims love their abuser, and don't often see the light until after they are taken away from the situation. I hope she gets the help that she needs and gets out of that bad situation. No one deserves to be in that kind of relationship.

Here's a thought - perhaps the new Mrs. Rice is a little afraid to have her loving, adoring husband at home in the house 24/7 with no job to go to, no apparent hobbies, friends who now shun him. Perhaps she's a little worried that that level of closeness is going to endanger her more.

But hey, if she wants to stand by her man that's all good too. Since Ray Rice has been made a multi-millionaire by the NFL plus whatever endorsements he hooked up with along the way, he should be well taken care of for the rest of his and his wife's lifetime - her's maybe not so long. Why not take that opportunity of no job to train for and go to and use it to travel around the country and counsel young men and women about the dangers of spousal/partner abuse and teach young men about respecting women and be an example for them of how stupid mistakes can take down the mighty. Would be good for him and his wife and may help keep some other young men from making the same mistakes.

But all this is moot because Rice will get his suspension extended to 6 games from 2 and he'll be back in the league later this year as soon as a contending team has their running back go down with injury and at the latest some sad sack team like Oakland or Jacksonville will give him a contract and he'll probably have learned nothing from the experience. Maybe he'll become famous as the next OJ.

Seriously people there is no evidence of any other time when he hit his wife. Just assuming it is repeat behavior and then treating him as a repeat offender is poor form. Oh and people, they did get help.

We are trying to get back to an "Off with their heads" style society MG. People like you are gumming up the works. It is impossible that people can have issues fixed through counseling and rehabilitation.

Until we discuss the prison system (where everyone wants to send Ray Rice), then everyone complains that our prisons are overcrowded and we should be focusing our efforts on rehabilitation.

When someone robs a bank, do they get the first one free?

When someone kills a person, do they get an mulligan for the first murder?

This attempt to trivialize Rice's actions as out of character or a one time shot (pun intended) is to trivialize spousal/partner abuse.

Neat copout. The screaming from people about Rice's initial punishment not being enough had nothing to do with it, I guess.

Soul of compassion here.

The media didn't assault Janay Rice. Ray Rice did. He's responsible for his actions and the consequences of his actions.

No, the media just ginned up the whole thing until the league had no choice but to get rid of him.

Really? The media destroyed his career? Are you ****ing kidding me?

See above.

That would be your choice.

As the news media and others were ginning this up with their outrage they might have paused to consider that they were not just hurting Rice but his whole family. Idiots and their stupid moral panic.

What's the penalty for the crime of knocking out a woman (or any other adult)? It's not a felony. First offence with no criminal history would be a fine of < $1000 in most states.

And so Rice must lose his career? Seems excessive.

Yeah, we are going to excuse people who sucker punch women until they are unconscious because the woman he knocks about forgives the criminal .

And the woman gets no say.

We've heard from a number of people who are very sure they know better how to live Jenet's life than she does.

And then there are the mind readers and the soothsayers.

25 million dollars makes for one hell of a budget.

He was punished for what he did even if he didn't go to prison. I'm not trivializing anything, but saying that treating him as a repeat offender when there is no evidence of any other incident is wrong. Treat repeat offenders as repeat offenders, not people that to the best of your knowledge only did it once.

"Ginned up the whole thing"? What in the hell?

How many non-celebrities who pleaded guilty to assaulting their wife/girlfriend who were employed in high profile businesses would get to keep their jobs and go along like nothing happened? Hell, even celebrities, like Mel Gibson and Alec Baldwin suffered significant financial loss and dried up opportunities as a result of their actions. What makes Rice so special?

Treating only repeat offenders as repeat offenders is setting up first time offenders to repeat their actions because of the soft landing they received.
