Former Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell and his wife, Maureen, were convicted on charges of public corruption by a jury on Thursday.
Bob McDonnell was convicted on 11 corruption counts, according to The Washington Post; Maureen McDonnell on eight counts. She was also found guilty of obstruction of justice

The verdict was read Thursday afternoon in the federal court in Richmond, Virginia. The Republican ex-governor and his wife had together faced a 14-count indictment centered on corruption charges. The pair was accused of trading official government favors to a Richmond-area businessman for more than $165,000 in gifts and loans.

The McDonnells could face jail time and hefty fines depending on the verdict and sentencing. Legal experts have said that in the case of a conviction, an appeal would be expected.

We need special prisons for elected officials who do this kind of stuff. Someplace where they are held in a VERY public facility so that everyone can see just what happens when you violate the trust of The People as an elected official.

Yep, but instead, don't we usually put them in isolated posh places?

How about we treat these people as the traitors they are?

I mean, if people can honestly call for a firing squad for Snowden, doesn't consistency dictate that we extend the same courtesy to these sacks of ****?

Weren't they offered a plea for no prison? Guess they should have taken it.

The bigger they are, the harder they fall. He had it comin'.....

Perry and now mcdonell. I guess it's not just the Illinois governors that are corrupt.

It's rather interesting when one considers he had a flicker of hope at a Presidential run.

Doesn't surprise me. The bar for the republican nomination is very low. In the 2012 cycle, perry, cain, and bachmann where all front runners at one point.

Kind of sad that such a prestigious position such as governor is sold out for a watch and wedding reception costs. Seems so petty and immature. What kind of people are we electing as the "best" of us to do these jobs.

As with Gingrich, this felony will assure McDonnell will have a prominent political future in the GOP and as a Fox News analyst.

Quite right - another mistake by McDonnell.

The bigger they are, the harder they fall. He had it comin'.....

He knew what was going on and that it was illegal. I'm hoping they give him the maximum.

Uhh... Gingrich is on CNN, not Fox. Just a tip for you: When making snarky partisan remarks at least get the analogous information right otherwise your statement becomes an embarrassment like yours just did.

I'm so glad you set the facts straight. It's not like Gingrich was ever an analyst on Fox or anything.

I voted for him and I thought he did a pretty good job as governor. Nonetheless, guilty is guilty and justice has been done. Unless they pull a rabbit out of a hat on appeal they will both go away for a long time. This makes their pre-trial refusal of a generous plea bargain look like one of the all time bonehead moves.

I agree.. you'd actually have to have a point first which you don't.

Yep, McDonnell's felony conviction will probably not bar him from a bright political future in the felony-haunted GOP, which has the likes of Gingrich as its leading spokesmen (and presidential contenders). It seems to be a habit among conservative republicans to gravitate toward felons.

You mean like this guy from CNN and now HuffPo?

Yep. Crooked politicians have always infected both parties. Which is not good for national security, if you know what I mean.

It does amaze you that him and his wife were so stupid to think taking all these free expensive gifts wouldn't raise an eyebrow.

Nothing but a cheap whore. They should automatic review all his transactions when governor. I really doubt it is his and the missus first rodeo.

Their blind spot came from the fact that none of this was against Virginia law. The prosecution was federal.

He might even have a presidential nomination for the G.O.P.

False equivalence. The poster to whom you responded referred to a felon. Spitizer may have been caught red-handed with his .... in his hands, but is not a felon. We have moral infidelity compared to criminal infidelity. They are different things.

That all said, I may take the minority position here to think the McDonnell convictions are really justice running amuck. They seem more guilty of stupidity than anything else. There doesn't seem to be any real corruption here (no benefit to the corrupter), just stupidity in taking things that should not be benefits of the job. Stupidity is not a crime, though is should disqualify you for public office (hear that Michelle Bachman?). It seems the prosecution overplayed their hand here.

On the hand, we did expose yet another hypocrite: the family value guy was more than happy to throw his wife under the bus to save is his own skin. How is that for family values? Move over David Vetter, the Cons have a new Hypocrite of the Year.

They were offered a generous pretrial plea bargain but declined. In retrospect that was another bonehead move. I don't have a problem with the guilty verdict but I also don't have a problem with the defense strategy. Who knows? Maybe it was true.
