Did anyone really expect anything better, a civil conversation perhaps? When will we learn that certain members of society can't be reasoned with?
 
It is pointless to go after the terrorists themselves. They don't care about their own lives. We need to start eliminating the villages they come from. Yes, entire populations. It is not a matter of "sinking to their level", it is a matter of extermination of a dangerous parasite. The message needs to be clear: This ideology will not be tolerated by the rest of the world. Killing a few men in masks will not make it stop. They need to be allowed to see their entire families wiped from the earth. Of course the pacifists will claim it is over reaction, possible throw in a right wing war monger comment or two, possibly even declare it a religious war. It is none of these things. It is eradicating a disease that is not affected by reason.

I didn't say they(Soviets) weren't brutal.....I said they didn't hunt them in the night, in the dark.

So they really never tried to make their enemy fear their worst.

Right... I am sure that the Soviets only fought them during the daylight hours. At the end of daylight savings time the Islamists could sleep in an hour knowing they were safe in their beds until sunup....

The problem is going in there in the first place. Had we left the dictator Saddam in power, he would still be contained and none of this would have ever happened.

That really makes us no better than them if we were to allow that to happen and it will only spark more anger against us, needing then to kill more families and innocent people. Call me a pacifist all you want but atleast I don't sink to their level.

Well, there is a couple of documentaries on it and they do have some movies based on True Stories. They had battles in the night. But the Soviets didn't go hunting them.

Which is the difference.

The Soviets would go out, kill them, then bury them in pig guts as an insult. In response, the Islamists would kidnap Soviet soldiers, mutilate them to look like pigs, and send them back. The Soviets killed as many as 90,000 Mujahedeen, and by some estimates 1.5 million Afghans, yet after 10 years they were no closer to winning the war against Islamists there than they were the day they went in.

What's the point, these groups force kids from everywhere to become soldiers. We just need to find wherever ISIS is and then carpet bomb the area.

Yeah but we have nothing to lose from just constant bombing. No soldier is in danger, terrorists die, companies make money and pay taxes for producing the bombs.

We need something to justify our terribly bloated military budgets anyway.

The difference was they weren't just fighting terrorists in Afghanistan. So they couldn't go and just kill wholesale slaughter. Or hunt them down to extinction.
 
I knew that post would get some negative response. But it is not animal cruelty to kill a bear that is attacking you. This started by them killing people who would not convert to their religion. Thinking that they would be peaceful if they are just left alone is delusional. the ideology they have can not be corrected. I would go so far as to say if everyone converted to Islam they would still find a reason to brutally execute people. I have no interest in killing people for the sake of anything, unfortunately in this case it is the only viable alternative. they will continue to kill until they are unable to, and their numbers are growing. All you have to do to understand what has to happen is to do the math. You can be morally superior if you want to be right up to the minute you are killed and then it won't matter.

Fighting terrorism and extremism was their stated reason for being there.

Yeah nothing to lose other than when you blow up villages you only create more extremists. Death and destruction is like fertilizer for Islamic Extremism. For example, if you kill a baker's wife and kids while bombing some village over there, all you have done is turn that baker into a terrorist.
