The San Antonio Spurs today announced that Becky Hammon has been hired as an assistant coach. Per club policy terms of the contract were not announced.

Way to break the NBA gender barrier, Becky, and good luck to you..... Except when your team plays the Rockets. LOL.

Article is here.

I don't have a problem with gender bias in certain cases and this is one of them. I don't care for this decision.

Then again, I'm no longer a fan of the NBA after they forced the Clippers owner out. Sorry, but forcing someone to sell their property is not justified.

NBA teams are franchises, and if you break the rules of those who run the franchise, then they have the legal right to strip you of your team. Period. If you want an example, buy a McDonald's and then refuse to sell hamburgers to black people and see how long you get to keep your franchise. If you act like a Stormfront goon, then you get what you deserve.

If she can handle the job, I say git-after-it. I just hope she doesn't start whinibg, "but, I'm a giiiiiirrrl!", when she gets her ass kicked by the sport-writers.

Reasoning?

Assistant coaches don't get too much of a spotlight to begin with (some are barred from speaking to the media in a lot of cases). And the Spurs are the winningest team in the NBA for the last decade plus and show no signs of slowing down, so I doubt this will be an issue.

Asst. coaches aren't usually chicks, either. Whatcha wanna bet she gets more attention and speaking oppurtunities than any other asst. coach in NBA history?

Whats next? Gays in sports?

They didn't "force him to sell." His wife sold it for $2 Billion while his brain was foggier than low lying clouds.

Premier franchise, great city, good move. One more crack in that glass ceiling.

I see they turned down my application.

Bastards.

Basketball is the one with the funny lines on it right?

I'm gonna bet she gets some coverage but isn't allowed to speak a great deal more, if at all, than other assistant coaches. Coach Popovich runs a tight ship.

If she was a gay woman, or just gay, this thread would be 50 pages by now.. ;)

Tim-

She could ask for a better opportunity to succeed. She is going to be transitioning in with a veteran group of champions and a head coach that has the total respect of all of the players on the team. Could be a very interesting situation. I can see the occasion where Pop might get 2x technicals and she would step into the head coach role for a quarter or two. Maybe not this season...but next.

Any other British readers also assume the wrong Spurs? :)

While I don't condone Sterling's actions, your comparison is RIDICULOUSLY inaccurate. There's no evidence what so ever that Sterling refused to sell anything to black people. It'd be more accurate to say "If you want an example, buy a McDonald's and then be illegally taped in a private setting asking your girlfriend to not bring black people into your McDonald and have that leaked into the media"

As to Becky, I wish her the best of luck and I'm sure she'll do excellent. In Pop and RC I trust.

I applied for the Papacy and got turned down. Something to do with not being Catholic...

No kidding. Of course, 25 of those pages would be from your side of the aisle.

I strongly disagree with you here. In the case of the NBA, his racist comments tarnished the brand, and because of that, the NBA has every right to strip him of his franchise, although in the end, it didn't come to that, as Sterling's wife ended up making the decision to sell the team.

No of what you said disagrees with what I said. I never said the NBA didn't have a reason to remove him from the franchise. What I said was that your analogy was a dishonest one presenting a situation that was very different from what Was occurring with the Sterling example.

You suggested he was simply making a claim of refusing service to black people per your analogy and doing so in a blatant fashion...that was not the case in the Sterling example

my god, it's so, so, so........progressive!

You may not have been tall enough. The NBA has a bias against short people. Actually, they have a bias against people who just are not giants. Maybe Obama can step in and help. Oh, God, what a thought... that's where he's going after he's done in the White House, he's going to the NBA!
