Va. man plants flag, claims African country, calling it ‘Kingdom of North Sudan’

Says who? And which ones?

All recognition does is make going forward easier, it's not required.

International legal scholars.

Any country, as the ability to start a new country derives from the right of an existing sovereign to claim land belonging to no one.

Phfft! A relatively recent construct that has no real meaning. If a new group can organize and call itself a country, and can defend itself successfully if need be, doesn't need legal approval from anybody.

Does that mean the US owns the moon?

Only the side where the Flag is.

A new country requires recognition by an existing country or group of countries.

Only if it wants to interact with those countries.

Maybe it just wants to be a hermit kingdom and live a life free of fuss and bother.

If it doesn't want to interact with them, what does it care if they recognize it or not?

Fill us in.

I wonder how he got there? no roads, it looks completely uninhabited, and uninhabitable.

There are roads, but they are camel/goat roads. Im guessing the fact that both Sudan and Egypt dont want the area means there is not much potential in the region.

If he is not paying taxes to either Sudan or Egypt, I say he is king until he gets dethroned. If any country comes in and dethrones him, then his kingdom has ended. Thus is the way of kingdoms, I would think.

I wonder if being dethroned means death from a roving band of islamist goat herders-in that region probably.

This must be that 'nothing' I've heard so much ado about.

Kinda a cool gesture. I hope he has enough family wealth that he has secured his daughters education before making her a princess.

For what its worth...I bought my wife a star once. So...we have that going for us.

Not really. It simply needs to be able to defend itself successfully, whether or not it is recognized is immaterial.

That's what most of the world thought about Saudi Arabia and a few other places until the discovery of oil and a demand for it happened.

Maybe that area is rich in 'rare' earth minerals.
