William Binney is one of the highest-level whistleblowers to ever emerge from the NSA. He was a leading code-breaker against the Soviet Union during the Cold War but resigned soon after September 11, disgusted by Washington’s move towards mass surveillance.

On 5 July he spoke at a conference in London organized by the Centre for Investigative Journalism and revealed the extent of the surveillance programs unleashed by the Bush and Obama administrations.

“At least 80% of fibre-optic cables globally go via the US”, Binney said. “This is no accident and allows the US to view all communication coming in. At least 80% of all audio calls, not just metadata, are recorded and stored in the US. The NSA lies about what it stores.”

The NSA will soon be able to collect 966 exabytes a year, the total of internet traffic annually. Former Google head Eric Schmidt once argued that the entire amount of knowledge from the beginning of humankind until 2003 amount to only five exabytes.

Binney, who featured in a 2012 short film by Oscar-nominated US film-maker Laura Poitras, described a future where surveillance is ubiquitous and government intrusion unlimited.

“The ultimate goal of the NSA is total population control”, Binney said, “but I’m a little optimistic with some recent Supreme Court decisions, such as law enforcement mostly now needing a warrant before searching a smartphone.”

The entire planet is aware of the NSA's Orwellian agenda, yet this fascist agency is still doing business as usual, thanks to a complicit bunch of criminals known as the US government.

it's time to improve the way we control the people that we employ to run the business of government, so that they cannot misuse that cool technology.

Too late....they've already created an entitled class to keep them in power. S..O...L

Re: One Of The NSA's Original Whistleblowers Says The Goal Is 'Total Population Contr

Well documented and we were quite warned long ago.

In the need to develop a capacity to know what potential enemies are doing, the United States government has perfected a technological capability that enables us to monitor the messages that go through the air. Now, that is necessary and important to the United States as we look abroad at enemies or potential enemies. We must know, at the same time, that capability at any time could be turned around on the American people, and no American would have any privacy left such is the capability to monitor everything—telephone conversations, telegrams, it doesn't matter. There would be no place to hide.
If this government ever became a tyrant, if a dictator ever took charge in this country, the technological capacity that the intelligence community has given the government could enable it to impose total tyranny, and there would be no way to fight back because the most careful effort to combine together in resistance to the government, no matter how privately it was done, is within the reach of the government to know. Such is the capability of this technology.

I don't want to see this country ever go across the bridge. I know the capacity that is there to make tyranny total in America, and we must see to it that this agency and all agencies that possess this technology operate within the law and under proper supervision so that we never cross over that abyss. That is the abyss from which there is no return.[9][10][11]

With Habeas Corpus effectively repealed in this country by our beneficent government, it is safe to say that tyranny is rather well established here. :(

Yes, but it has arrived so incrementally that it has been accepted as normal. Fear and security following crisis' is the only time you typically see quick advancements, as with the years immediately following 9/11. And our left and right partisans give cover to their parties and presidents, seeing party loyalty as superior to country and constitution. so it will continue.

Doesn't seem far off. The NSA at this point has proven more a danger than a benefit. Time to get rid of it.

Re: One Of The NSA's Original Whistleblowers Says The Goal Is 'Total Population Contr

Yes, get rid of the capacity for signals intelligence. Excellent idea.

Re: One Of The NSA's Original Whistleblowers Says The Goal Is 'Total Population Contr

Senator Church wasn't an advocate for dismantling the NSA, as I doubt anyone was/is. The warning call (which incidentally was not heeded) was for comprehensive reform resulting in far better checks and balances, regulation and audit to prevent the predicted abuses.

The proverbial "shotgun approach" is unnecessary.

We can keep the NSA as it has a valid purpose, at least in times of legitimate war.

The NSA and its government brethren must simply learn to obey the law, which it now violates with impunity. You know, that part that says "no warrant shall issue, but upon probable cause"?

Talk to Ikari, he's the one that suggested it. Again, you're not the arbiter of what's probable cause and what's not. We have people who have years and years of education and experience for that, not internet conspiracy theorists.

Neither are you an arbiter of that OWO.

You are a great cheerleader for the status quo, but not an arbiter of what is illegal or not.

Did I ever say I was?

I said federal judges were. You know, the guys that oversee NSA?

Does a dog need years and years of experience to know when you've kicked it? Or is it likely to know right away?

They "oversee" the NSA about as much as you "oversee" the Congress. Gimme a break dude.

Might want to get control of the technology too.

Well, if the government could be trusted with that capacity I might be open to the idea of allowing them to have it, but since they can't, I'm not.

It takes years and years of experience to know what you're talking about, yes.

To wit:

They "oversee" the NSA about as much as you "oversee" the Congress. Gimme a break dude.

Henry says this, but he actually has no idea whatsoever

Well, if the government could be trusted with that capacity I might be open to the idea of allowing them to have it, but since they can't, I'm not.

Well, too bad, huh?

Those guys do a great job. In fact, they do as good a job as the supreme court does upholding the constitution.

Re: One Of The NSA's Original Whistleblowers Says The Goal Is 'Total Population Contr

Well, too bad, huh?

Yeah, it's really too bad the government can't be trusted, but then that was known before the NSA was established.

You could, but currently it is creating more issues than it solves and it seems to be rooted deep in the agency itself. Nix it, we can make a new agency under better restriction, regulation, and control.

Re: One Of The NSA's Original Whistleblowers Says The Goal Is 'Total Population Contr

...in your uneducated and inexperienced opinion...

Yeah, it's really too bad the government can't be trusted, but then that was known before the NSA was established.

Uh huh. Tell me more! Who should we trust!?

Most of whom wouldn't know the Constitution if they were hit in the head with it. These are some of the same twits who I watched in person screw the pooch big time in Iraq. Sorry but most of those people deciding probable cause are either shills or educated fools. I don't trust them as far as I can throw an elephant. The NSA's mandate was FOREIGN signals intelligence gathering not domestic. As they have strayed into domestic intelligence gathering they need to be dismantled and replaced completely. Further all their operatives need to be very thoroughly investigated.
