Hi polgara
Throwing a bunch of our money at those corrupt and incompetent bozos down there is not something I'm necessarily advocating or even supporting, it's just the fact of the matter that that's what is being done and it's something I can understand given those countries are poor and would find it hard to themselves cash up even to get their own kids back, assuming they wanted them back the future notwithstanding.
It simply points out, as I'd be confident you could appreciate either way, the government is doing something tangible and that is likely to be an effective incentive to get those governments and societies to be receptive to the repatriation of their own youth.
I'd much rather the governments there themselves paid for the repatriation of their own children, and I believe Washington too would much prefer to see it happen that way. Maybe - and it's only a maybe - if the governments there had to pay for the repatriation the governments and the societies there might think twice to instead spend a couple of bucks of their own to straighten up their own southern borders to stop the flow and transit of these kids.
But then I wouldn't expect much from the governments or societies down there that would be responsible, moral, just.
Or maybe see what they could do to help the people they govern - much like FDR did in the Great Depression here. Surely there is infrastructure that could be built or repaired or something with the money they're going to get. The elite will doubtless keep the bulk of it, but surely it would benefit everyone if the rest of the people are not forgotten. The elite classes are not the ones trying to illegally enter our Country!
