KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Five NATO service members were killed in an apparent friendly fire incident in southern Afghanistan, the international coalition said on Tuesday.

A statement from the coalition said all five soldiers died on Monday but did not give further details on the attack or the nationality of the soldiers. Coalition policy is for home countries to identify their military dead.

"The casualties occurred during a security operation when their unit came into contact with enemy forces. Tragically, there is the possibility that fratricide may have been involved. The incident is under investigation. Our thoughts are with the families of those killed during this difficult time," the coalition said in an announcement.....snip~

NATO says 5 service members killed in Afghanistan

This has been up all night long. This is what the Headline Reads. 5 NATO service Members killed in Afghanistan. Yet.....here is what we know from the Start. Their 5 Americans.....Coalition Forces Spokesperson tells us this? Not US BO Team Memnber with a title. What they are trying to tell us is that all 5 of our Troopers were killed by friendly fire. First they said could be a case of fratricide. Now they are saying they may have called for air cover and gave the wrong coordinates and had their own selves Bombed.

If this is the case this would be the Worse such case of friendly fire on the ground that we have had in the Entire Afghan War. Oh.....there is one slight addition to the story. <Koff, uhm, koff, ahem, clears throat.....The Taliban have taken credit for the Attack!

So here we have a story.....that they knew it was 5 American Troopers Killed. Yet they Report it as NATO Forces. What say ye?

Re: NATO says 5 service members killed in Afghanistan.....

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack. The insurgents have intensified attacks on Afghan and foreign forces ahead of the country's presidential election runoff on Saturday. Officials are concerned there could be more violence around the time of the vote, although the first round in April passed relatively peacefully.

A Taliban spokesman, Qari Yousef Ahmadi, said a battle took place on Monday night between foreign troops and Taliban fighters in the Arghandab district. Ahmadi claimed a "huge number" of NATO soldiers were killed or wounded in the fighting but the Taliban often exaggerate their claims.

Separately, a NATO statement said a service member had died on Monday as a result of a non-battle injury in eastern Afghanistan. The deaths bring to 36 the number of NATO soldiers killed so far this year in Afghanistan, with eight service members killed in June.....snip~

So, we already had attacks by the Taliban after BO released the 5.....then we have the Taliban and Western forces confirming engagements were taking place. Yet there is a difference on the results of dead and injured. What say ye?

Re: NATO says 5 service members killed in Afghanistan.....

I don't think there was any peace agreement made, just prisoner exchange period.

There are so many political/military entities feeding at the trough in Afghanistan that they get confused when issuing press releases?

NATO, US, who cares? For all practical purposes they are the same. I guess it depends upon what the uniform of the day is?

Now it appears the 5 recently released Taliban Robocops are not quite as necessary as the media would have us believe. Friendly fire brings more casualties than IED.

Mornin' American. :2wave: There hasn't and BO thought by releasing the 5 that the Taliban would come back to the Negotiating Table. They Immediately stated they aren't and that was on June 2nd. We had it up in another thread here too.

Afghans say Taliban prisoners freed by U.S. will rejoin battle.....

"They will definitely go back to fight, if health-wise they are able to go," said a top official at Afghanistan's spy agency, who asked to remain anonymous because of the sensitivity of the topic. "They will be very dangerous people, because they have connections with regional and international terror organizations around the world."

The Taliban denied the prisoners would return to battle but said the swap should not be regarded as a gesture of good will or a step towards the revival of peace talks between Islamist insurgents and the Afghan government.

"This is purely a negotiation between the Taliban and the Americans... It won't help the peace process in any way, because we don't believe in the peace process," said Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid.

This decision showed that the region, Afghanistan and its people aren't worth anything to American government," said Gul Mohammad, a high school teacher. "Otherwise, why would they swap a useless army soldier who broke the law with the five most dangerous Taliban fighters?"

"This act will boost the Taliban's morale and encourage them to fight harder to capture foreign soldiers. Now they are confident that their efforts won't be wasted," said army colonel Asadullah Samadi......snip~

The sad thing about this is friendly fire incidents happen in war. None of us like it and all precautions possible is taken to prevent it, but it still happens. Human error, mechanical error, computer error in today’s technology age. Who knows? One will have to wait for the full report. The U.S. is part of NATO, it could have been U.S. troops on the ground and a NATO plane, it could have been a joint operation. One just must wait. The fog of war is always there, always present. In my time one knew what was happening around 3 feet in front of you, 3 feet in back and 3 feet to either side. You never had the big picture. Headquarters relies on reports from the field, sometimes there are plenty of mix reports, reports contradicting each other. Until the fog clears, no one can know anything for certain. Then there are times when the fog never clears and one never knows exactly what happened or the reasons why and how come.

I think the young among us have gotten too use of immediate and instant communications that supposedly solves everything. Even in today’s day and age, that is not the case on the battlefield, the fog still exists. Time for my walk, I’ll check back later.

Mornin HD. :2wave: They are now saying it was SP. Ops Mission to, they got into it with the Taliban and it was at night. That they called in a B1 Bomber and called in the wrong coordinates.

Spec OPs? I know we have people that make mistakes. But not to much with Special Operations.

Either way.....then it will go down as one of the Worse Friendly Fire acts in the War......and from the ground.

CBS is reporting they still can't say what all the mistakes are. But that mistakes were made.

I.....smell BS, and the reason why. Is the Pakistani launched a pretty good size Assault on the Afghanistan's Southern Border taking out 9 Pakistani Taliban hideouts.

Mornin' Pero. :2wave: Yeah they do happen. CBS reports now the American Team is investigating as to the hows and whys. It was in Southern Afghanistan too.

Calling in a B1......they would need to be aware of what Fighters that the Pakistani had in the Air to. The Pakistani Military says it has killed over 25 Taliban all along the Southern Border.

Oh, that's CBS's words. The American Team is Investigating now.

Re: NATO says 5 service members killed in Afghanistan.....

29 soldiers have died in Afghanistan this year, and 127 last year. Its sad that their deaths are only news now because of the flop of Obama releasing terrorists from prison. Suddenly people care about Afghanistan.

Re: NATO says 5 service members killed in Afghanistan.....

MOre disingenuous clap trap from someone cheering on the Taliban because of his hate for THIS President.

Well.....now they have guided focus. Although most Military and ex Military do keep an eye on things.

Myself, I was surprised CBS was reporting it at all.

So is the American Team on the ground and if so they would need security. Or are they just going over all the communications records?

They aren't running the story for the Moment. All they said was the American Team was investigating the Hows and Whys.....I have the Pakistani Piece up in Asia. Since that was the second attack the Pakistani Taliban launched on that Airport. Here they get their asses kicked and still talk about how more attacks are to come.

It appears Negotiations with both Taliban Organizations wont be taking place.

They may have been serving alongside other Nato forces so they were unable to confirm at first what nationality they were. Regardless they are reporting it as American now.

Mornin Higgins. :2wave: Yeah they had Ops going. Both sides Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Re: NATO says 5 service members killed in Afghanistan.....

Mornin Crue. :2wave: Not for those who believe in the Mission. We can't leave just 9800 there and then draw down to half the following year.

Problem with BO and his teams thinking is and has always been. Do whatever to get out of the War. Not looking at the fact.....the War isn't over.

I haven't seen any cheering on this thread or any other for that matter for the Taliban. I have seen a lot of distrust for this president, but that isn't the same as cheering for the enemy. If you want cheering for the enemy, actually down right helping and abetting them, go back to the Vietnam War. Back then there were a lot of Americans who didn't give a hoot whether we got our POW's and MIA's back and in fact one could say most of the anti war movement was rooting for the VC and NVA to kill us instead of us killing them. I think there are a few of that movement on this site today, but today they are backing the swap and saying that they care about the soldiers. Politics of the times I suppose. I am an old cynic from way back.

That's life, the Taliban got what they wanted. No need for further negotiations at this point in time. Not until they get another bargaining chip.

Not sure why you think the Paki raids has much to do with this, love to hear why you think that.

As far as the who makes mistakes, my mom once said if you have a belly button you can make a mistake. ;)

IIRC the Spec boys did this exact same thing going into Afghanistan in 2001. SF on the ground called in a guided munition but gave the Observer coordinate as the Target one.

'splain that mission again. And how are 10,000 going to keep the peace for how many more years?

Well if you go and check out Stratfor.....You will see they seem to think its a Joint Venture with these Attacks. That All was coordinated. At the same time with both Afghanistan and Pakistan.

I guess thats SOP for those who have Aircraft in the Sky. Course most in the military already know the basics. Just sayin. ;)

I thought BO said half of the 9800 will be to train the Afghans.....and the Other half will be for Ops against AQ and Insurgents and that we will be there for another decade.

Been there for how long and we still need to train them for future security? And the other half up against how many Taliban, who will step up recruitment.?
