Edward Snowden NBC NEWS FULL INTERVIEW[W:28]

Re: Edward Snowden NBC NEWS FULL INTERVIEW

Russia isn't sheltering Snowden purely for purposes of goodwill. Russia places great emphasis on reciprocity. It is sheltering him for mutual benefit: giving him shelter (his need) in exchange for critical information (its need). To believe that Russia would allow Snowden to reside there in the face of strong U.S. pressure and that the FSB would keep its hands off the contents of Snowden's laptops/flash drives doesn't make much sense. Russia would want something in return for its efforts and it almost certainly has it, and probably voluntarily in exchange for his being permitted to leave the airport.

The previous poster came across as saying that he took the information SO THAT he could give it to Russia and China. Maybe I misinterpreted his meaning, but that's how it came across.

Yes, I agree with you that no doubt he gave the Russians so information in exchange for a place to live, but I might be wrong on that. It doesn't really matter because the entire world can now read the information he absconded with.

A man without a country and without a passport is in desperate straights, and I would not blame him for doing what he must.

Re: Edward Snowden NBC NEWS FULL INTERVIEW

I'm betting more often than not you get it right. We come by those instincts naturally, so being aware of and honing them is a very powerful tool. Body language has always intrigued me. Some of us are better at reading it than others. I like to think I'm pretty good at it myself. Sometimes it's so obvious...one's body language is so far removed from the words coming from one's mouth.

I have to admit to being less than perfect in my analysis of such things though. There have been times when I was so sure somebody was feeding me a complete line of bull, but when I checked it out, they were telling the absolute truth. And there have been times that I believed them to be telling me the truth when it turned out to be a bald faced lie. So I can be fooled.

But I get it right enough of the time to at least be alert to my instincts. :)

And my instincts are that Snowden was giving us some valuable information last night, but some of his personal justifications we might be wise take with a bit of a grain of salt.

Specifics are not necessary.
Sure they are.
Otherwise, you just have embarrassed bureaucrats and gov't apparatchiks droning on about alleged "serious harm".

When national security is violated, it harms all Americans.

That's what the spymeisters all say.
I don't believe them.

If that were not so, you could advocate the release of all classified documents.

I'm not sure about ALL classified info, but I'm guessing that most classified info has nothing to do with actual national security.

One interview that reveals nothing
Uhh its an interview. It was Snowden answering questions, so it certainly did reveal something..

and a socialist responds with the above.
Sure did.

Ever think of waiting for the whole story from more than one source?
Do you understand its an interview from NBC News. What other "sources" aired it when it was an NBC exclusive??...

For starters is was shown this morning that 39% of the people polled were not sure how they felt about Snowden long BEFORE this aired.
Cool. Whats your point?

To me he should have spilled his info to the press and remained here to fight for what he believes in?
Ok.

Let's not forget he went to Cuba.
No he didnt.

Re: Edward Snowden NBC NEWS FULL INTERVIEW

Hippy BS. A guy who steals info to dump for journalists to determine if its dangerous? Im sorry, but thats a low bar, the type only a lefty could celebrate.
"Only lefty's can celebrate"? Many libertarians and conservatives say this man is a hero as well.. There are many examples here.

Re: Edward Snowden NBC NEWS FULL INTERVIEW

^ What are you talking about? Data mining is a marketing tool. People's activities get monitored by private websites who then use the anonymous data for marketing purposes. That's not the same thing a the government collecting info about your relationships, bank transactions, digital communications, etc... to build a profile on you when you haven't even committed a crime.

Snowden is right. Our government (Republican and then Democrat) rode the 9/11 tragedy all the way to bank. We do not have the level of freedom from government intrusion that we had even back then, and anyone who thinks otherwise is delusional.

It isn't data mining.

And it will not stop there

Re: Edward Snowden NBC NEWS FULL INTERVIEW

There is no way that NBC invested countless thousands of dollars into arranging this Snowden interview without first gaining active support from government officials.

Although the media does not tell us what to think, it does tell us what to think about.

This interview was very personal. It is about rehabilitating Edward Snowden and negotiating a return to U.S. soil. The media knew full well how photogenic and intelligent Snowden was/is and knew full well that Snowden could easily participate with the narrative required,

NSA is quite desperate to know the complete breech. To know what files were stolen because they need to know what must be tightened up as the programs move forward. (For the NSA, it is paramount to accertain just how much does "The Enemy" know?)

Calm

God bless this man. God bless him. Its a shame that people view this man as a traitor and not as a hero in our country.

Unfortunately, that is what happens when the media and government work in cooperation with each other. Together they can mold public opinion.

They can certainly try to mold public opinion.
How effective are they in this endeavor?
This thread, as an example, has varying opinions on Snowden, not restricted to political lean.
Skepticism towards gov't and media is widespread.
That's a good thing.

Low level system analyist/army dropout who calls himself a "super spy". Lol just another ego maniac looking for fame in this age of celebrity

Re: Edward Snowden NBC NEWS FULL INTERVIEW

You guys getting it right now after branding him as a traitor initially.

Trust me, they are still out there.

Maybe so.
That would lead to the question of how a "low level/dropout" could, allegedly, compromise national security.

Actually, he wasn't an Army dropout, he wasn't physically capable of duty, and he was a 'low level system analyst' according to the NSA, according to Snowden himself, he was much more than that. Low level system analysts aren't trained as spies and don't have top level security clearance. I'm thinking the NSA and our government in general referring to Snowden as a low level system analyst is them trying to cover their asses.

This whole thing sounds like a Bourne Identity movie plot.

Complacency, im sure they have restricted access now etc.

I'm certainly not saying that we are robots. And yes, skepticism towards media and government is, to an extent, widespread. But despite that skepticism, we cannot deny that our opinions are often shaped by talking heads from 24 hr news stations and their sponsors.

Re: Edward Snowden NBC NEWS FULL INTERVIEW

To the lefties who think Snowden was in the right, why dont you extend this line of thought to the IRS scandal, where Americans were targeted based on political ideology? Im not exactly seeing you in the trenches.

It was wrong for the IRS to target anyone based on political ideology. In fact, speaking for myself, I believe the IRS should be abolished. Please try again.

Yeah but you're a Libertarian Lefty, that don't count. :D

Tax legislation should be simple enough one can file on a post card. The current regulations is nothing more than the government trying to make you, the citizens of the United States to behave in a manner the government wants them too. Most of the tax code is in response to lobbyist and special interests who bribe our legislatures with campaign donations to get written into tax law what they want written into it.

I think tax legislation should be simple enough that one doesn't have to file anything at all.

Yes, indeed.
That's why the tax code will never be revamped.
Too much money has been spent "adjusting" it.

That would basically mean doing away with the income tax, going to a national sales tax or something akin to it. Which wouldn't in my book be a bad thing. Then people would pay would pay the tax based on what they consume and buy. That would seem to be the fairest way to tax people.

That is the truth.

I would personally go with what Adam Smith, Thomas Paine, and Milton Friedman preferred: ground rent (aka LV'T', aka the Single Tax).

The man broke the law for doing what he did --- and I'm glad he was willing to do so. It's important that the people know what our government is doing, is capable of doing and may be doing without the courts or oversite as our government claims. Snowden isn't the threat, the NSA is the threat.

<waves to the NSA bastard watching me type this> :whothere:

Re: Edward Snowden NBC NEWS FULL INTERVIEW

And how do you know he gave that to China and Russia? Did Brian Williams tell you, or maybe Dianne Feinstein?

More importantly, he gave it to the world, and in a responsible manner.

Responsible? We dont know who has what, we know what he claims to a journalist. And beyond that, I dont consider how he gave the info over to be responsible. In his own words he gave bulk data to journalists, and trusted them to release info that wouldnt be harmful to people.

In the interview he states that we haven't heard of anybody harmed by this data being released-but that does not mean nobody has been harmed. People aren't exactly going to go to the news and say "hey this info we got helped us kill 2 informants, THANKS SNOWDEN! Nor would the US confirm or deny or even address this publicly-which would lend credibility to the info Snowden leaked being good info.
